AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
A weak cold front will settle just to our south, across South
Carolina and southeast North Carolina early this morning. Surface
low pressure will track along the front today, with a stronger low
to follow this evening through tonight, as a strong upper level
disturbance crosses the region. This storm system will exit the
Carolina coast Thursday morning, followed by cool high pressure
building in from the north for Thursday afternoon through Saturday.
Another potent storm system will cross the region early Sunday
through Monday.

.NEAR TERM /TODAY THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 300 AM Wednesday...

...Winter weather advisory over north central NC for tonight...

Low levels are beginning to dry out from the NNW as slightly lower
surface dewpoints and drier air just off the ground advects into
north central NC, so any dense fog this morning should be isolated
for the next few hours, with an improving trend as the surface cold
front continues to settle just to our SE this morning. The expansive
cold/dense high centered over SE Manitoba will attempt to build in
today but should be initially hindered by the mountains, thus expect
above normal low-level thicknesses this morning followed by a
gradual fall this afternoon as the cooler air starts to breach the
Appalachians. The rain area stretching from central AL across
central and northern GA and upstate SC will continue to spread NE
this morning, mainly impacting our southern two-thirds, and will
have the highest pops (likely to categorical) here, with lower pops
across the N (sub-15% near the VA border trending to good chance to
likely near Hwy 64) where the lowest 3km will be drier. Stratocu and
overcast mid clouds, however, will continue to spread across all of
central NC, and this with the precip will hold high temps down in
the upper 40s to lower 50s. Pops should drop a bit late in the
afternoon, with a brief lull in forcing for ascent ahead of the mid
level shortwave trough, so will show a dip in pops between 21z and
01z.

The real action will start mid-late evening as the potent shortwave
trough crosses the Mid South, on track to shift E across VA/NC
overnight. During this time frame is when the cold/dense air mass
finally breaks through the central Appalachians and starts to spill
down through VA toward NC with a strengthening low level flow from
the NNE capped by strengthening SW flow at 850 mb across southern
NC. A concentrated surface low will track ENE along the front,
crossing the Carolinas this evening through midnight before pushing
offshore and intensifying overnight off SC. Forcing for ascent will
be maximized in the mid levels with strong DPVA and 150-200 m height
falls. While this should be a fairly quick shot of lift, running
roughly from late evening through daybreak and peaking 1-3 hours
after midnight, it will coincide with a cooling of the column, which
in turn will likely be augmented by bursts of heavier precip rates.
With minor differences, models remain in fairly good agreement in
showing this cooling saturated column below -20C, favoring a trend
toward a rain/snow mix then all snow after midnight from NW to SE.
As the surface to 850 lows are projected to strengthen quickly late
tonight just offshore, the threat for banded precip, likely in the
form of snow by that point, increases. Model QPF has been trending a
bit higher in recent runs, and factoring in the cooling column
through both the low and mid levels, we're now looking at the
potential for over an inch over portions of the northern Piedmont of
NC, and an increasing chance for at least a dusting to half inch
over all but the far southern portion of the CWA. Will issue a
winter weather advisory for roughly areas along and N of Hwy 64 from
midnight to 8 am for a high potential of 0.5-1.5" snow accumulation.
Accumulation will be mostly on grassy surfaces, given soil temps in
the 40s, however any quick burst will lead to accumulations on the
pavement as well. And given the potential for banded precip, islands
of higher totals across the far N Piedmont can't be ruled out.

The first 36 hours may be the most quiet weather period in the 7 day
forecast. All clouds from tonight/Thursday's system will have
departed to the east by sunset, clear skies will continue Thursday
night and Friday, and just some high cloud cover will move in late
Friday night as high pressure dominates much of the eastern United
States. However, northwesterly flow will keep temperatures on the
cool side, with a hard freeze expected both Thursday night and
Friday night with lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s on Friday.
Despite the breezy conditions on Thursday, any leftover
precipitation on roadways and sidewalks that does not evaporate
during the daytime will certainly freeze Thursday night and Friday
night, resulting in potentially hazardous travel overnight and into
the morning hours.

Cloud cover will increase Saturday although conditions will remain
dry. The system that will arrive for the second half of the weekend
is just making its way onshore along the Pacific coastline, so it
should be better sampled in the next couple of days. The last four
runs of the ECMWF have shown low pressure develop in the central
Plains Saturday, fade out as it moves into the Ohio Valley, and
redevelop along the Carolina coastline with Miller B cyclogenesis.
While the 26/00Z run of the GFS showed the Plains low simply moving
east-northeast with little change in intensity, the 26/18Z and
27/00Z runs of the GFS are moving in the direction of the ECMWF,
although its coastal low is weaker than that of the ECMWF. While the
Miller B scenario is still far from certain, it appears more likely
now that the models are beginning to come into better agreement.
This will allow for most precipitation to fall Sunday and Sunday
evening, with wraparound precipitation primarily northeast of
Raleigh through Monday night with the coastal low making slow
progress up the coast. With the colder antecedent conditions leading
up to this event, any wintry precipitation that may fall would be
much more likely to stick than with our first storm with colder soil
temperatures developing. Temperatures will remain below normal
through the extended forecast.

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
As of 1255 AM Wednesday...

LIFR/VLIFR conditions continue over central NC and will do so for
the next few hours, however cigs have broken up at INT/GSO in the
last hour, with MVFR vsbys in fog. High resolution models suggest
that the very low stratus and fog will improve prior to daybreak,
with most locations trending toward MVFR or even VFR after 10z. But
sct low clouds will persist in the morning, and could go broken at
times. Otherwise, we should see generally VFR conditions after 14z,
except at FAY which will see periods of rain and mostly MVFR
conditions today. Rain chances will be less, but not zero, at the
remaining sites today. After 21z, we expect a short break in the
rain chances areawide with winds increasing from the NE near 10 kts
gusting to 15-20 kts, lasting through this evening. Rain, with MVFR
conditions, will return from the west late in the period.

Looking beyond 06z Thu, poor aviation conditions, likely IFR/LIFR,
are expected areawide 06z-12z with rain trending to a mix then
mostly snow at all but FAY (which should remain as mostly rain).
Quick west-to-east improvement to VFR is expected 12z-16z Thu, with
surface winds shifting to be from the northwest. VFR will hold
through Sat evening, followed by a trend to rainy MVFR late Sat
night through Sun with the next storm system. -GIH

snow on grassy areas, to as much as one inch of snow accumulation,
is possible before the storm exits our area Thursday morning.

Areas of fog, some locally dense with visibilities less than 50
yards can be expected through 400 AM. There may be some
improvements as a weak cold front approaches from the mountains
later tonight. Otherwise, motorists should be prepared for locally
dense fog to continue to be around through the overnight period.
