.UPDATE...
Issued at 1230 PM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

Updated to expand the winter storm watch to include the rest of
the Eastern Plains along with the lower elevations of the Sangre
de Cristo Mountains and Wet Mountains and Valley. Given the cold
air in place on the Plains, snow ratios are forecast to be high.
This has increased snow totals with widespread 4 to 8 inches
across the Plains from late Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

For the Wind Chill Advisory, went with all of the Plains, from
tonight, through early Monday afternoon. There may be periods of
sub-criteria conditions, during this period, but conditions are
expected to be close. The most dangerous conditions are expected
Sunday night into Monday, and upgrades to a Wind Chill Warning may
be warranted as we progress through the next couple of days.

UPDATE Issued at 1020 AM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

QPF and PoP values have been increased over the western plains ,
mainly along the I-25 corridor due to persistent easterly winds
with a very cold airmass in place, coupled with weak upslope
enhancement and enough dendritic growth in the lower levels that
is producing snow over these areas. Some patchy freezing fog could
also be accompanied with this, especially near the eastern facing
slopes of the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Wet Mountains,
and Rampart Range. This will begin to taper off later in the
afternoon.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 448 AM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

Currently...Interesting loop of KPUX radar imagery this morning,
with numerous small mesoscale waves and bands of snow across El
Paso, Pueblo and Crowley counties, forced mainly by shallow upslope
flow. Have seen a few spots with nearly an inch of accumulation so
far, though with latest radar images suggesting a general
shrinking/weakening trend, will only include some flurries for a few
more hours before most activity ends along the I-25 corridor. T/Td
spreads have become just wide enough to prevent much in the way of
dense fog, and with few observation sites reporting visibility below
2sm, will cancel the current dense fog advisory. Winds have picked
up slightly on the plains this morning, dropping wind chills below
zero at a few locations, though appears values won't fall low enough
for an advisory at this point.

Today/Tonight...Upper wave over California this morning will dive
south into AZ by this evening, then swing eastward along the
US/Mexico border overnight. System will bring a return of snow to
the mountains, mainly along the Continental Divide today, though
with southern track, amounts don't look particularly heavy, with
just a few inches likely, focused mainly over the ern San Juans.
Could see some occasional flurries in the cold air over the plains
today/this evening as well, though any snowfall amounts here will be
minor. Weak surface low spinning up between La Junta and Trinidad
today will keep low level flow e-se over much of the plains, locking
in low clouds and cold air across much of the area. Areas south of
the low around Trinidad/Raton Mesa could mix out of the cold air
briefly, as wly winds develop and boost temps for a couple hrs this
afternoon, and areas near the crest of the Palmer Divide may see
cold air become just shallow enough for some short-lived warming as
well. Overall, based on trends of the past couple days, have nudged
NBM temps downward a few degf at many locations east of I-25, and
attempted to tighten the gradient along and west of the Interstate.
Some light snow will linger overnight across mainly the central
mountains as moist wly flow persists, though any snowfall accums
will be light. Suppose plains/I-25 could see some flurries as cold
air deepens slightly, though chances look too low to include in the
grids. Did remove most fog from the overnight forecast, as T/Td
spreads may remain just high enough to preclude anything dense.
Combinations of cold temps and modest winds will drop wind chills at
least close to minus 18f threshold near the KS border toward Sat
morning, though areal extent of colder chills looks too small for a
highlight.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)
Issued at 448 AM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

The two main concerns for the long term period are:

1) Bitter cold temperatures east of the mountains from Saturday
night through Monday morning. Breezy to gusty winds are also
expected, creating dangerous wind chills, especially early Monday
morning.

2) An upper-level system is expected to bring widespread snow to the
entire region Saturday night into Sunday. The aforementioned winds
will likely result in blowing snow, particularly near the Kansas
border and over the mountains.

Saturday...

An upper-level trough is expected to continue propagating across the
Desert Southwest and into Texas for the first half of the weekend.
This feature is not expected to bring much for precipitation except
for some light snow over the Continental Divide. However, a surface
high pressure system remains over the northern Great Plains, causing
easterly to southeasterly surface flow across southeastern Colorado.
This flow could cause just enough upslope lift to create some light
snow/flurries, freezing drizzle, or freezing fog, especially near
the Kansas border. Forecast soundings continue to indicate that
conditions will be favorable for any or all of these to occur as
well. The easterly winds at the surface are also expected to bring
in a reinforcement of arctic air to the plains, with highs in the
lower to mid teens. The high valleys west of the eastern mountains
are expected to remain mild with temperatures reaching the mid 30s
to lower 40s.

Saturday night through Monday morning...

Another trough moves toward the region from the Pacific Northwest.
As it approaches, there is good model agreement that it will
strengthen as it propagates across the Four Corners and bring
widespread accumulating snow to the region. Flow aloft becomes
southwest as the trough digs just to our south, providing efficient
upslope to the southwestern facing slopes, particularly the eastern
San Juans. Meanwhile, a period of warm air advection at 700 mb and
upper-level deformation over the far eastern plains are expected to
bring enhanced lifting to that area. In addition, the surface high
pressure over the northern Great Plains is expected to strengthen,
causing a stronger pressure gradient across eastern Colorado. As a
result, gusty east winds are anticipated, causing reduced visibility
due to blowing snow. Therefore, have issued a Winter Storm Watch for
the eastern San Juans above 10,000 ft, Sangre de Cristos above
11,000 ft, and the far eastern plains from late Saturday afternoon
through late Sunday afternoon. Elsewhere, snow accumulations of 2 to
5 inches are possible in the lower elevations, with 6 to 12 inches
possible over the higher terrain. Although I didn't include them in
the current watch, I suspect that most, if not all, of the region
winds up in at least a Winter Weather Advisory in an upcoming
package.

Now for the cold...The easterly winds at the surface are expected to
continue advecting bitter cold temperatures into the area. This will
likely be the coldest air across the plains in several years as
highs are expected to only reach the single digits above zero across
the plains. The current forecast highs for Colorado Springs and
Pueblo are 3 and 4, respectively. Current record low max for each
site are 5 at Colorado Springs (1895 & 1903) and 8 at Pueblo (1895 &
1905). Temperatures are expected to be more mild in the high
valleys, but still quite a bit cooler than Saturday, with highs
reaching the lower to mid 20s. Lows across the plains and I-25
corridor are expected to be -10 to -15, which would break the record
low in Colorado Springs of -8 set in 1895. Wind chills are also
expected to reach dangerous levels of -20 to -30 across the plains.
As of the latest guidance, cloud cover is anticipated to remain in
the area, but if it does clear out by early Monday morning, the lows
across the plains could be several degrees colder. Lows in the high
valleys are anticipated to range from -5 to 5.

Monday through Thursday...

After the weekend system exits the region, a gradual warm up is
expected. That said, it is anticipated to remain below average
across the plains into late week. How warm it does get, especially
early in the week will be dependent on cloud cover and how much snow
is on the ground. Temperatures in the high valleys are anticipated
to rebound to near average by midweek. Another disturbance moving
through the region on Tuesday into Wednesday brings the chance for
more snow along the Continental Divide.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon)
Issued at 1043 AM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

For KALS, VFR conditions will prevail throughout the forecast
period, there will be some lowering CIGs and VCSH later towards
the end of the forecast due to the approaching low pressure
system, although this will not be at IFR criteria within the TAF
forecast period. Winds will be a little stronger and gusty this
afternoon and then begin to weaken later and veer back to the
south-southeast. Be advised that there could be some light to
moderate turbulence in the vicinity, especially below FL100.

For KCOS and KPUB, with enough cold air in place and dendritic
growth in the lower levels with a predominantly, it has produced
some low CIGs and VIS due to -SN, BR, and patchy FZFG as well near
the eastern facing slopes of Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Wet
Mountains, and Rampart Range, therefore expect IFR/LIFR conditions
over the entire western plains. Winds are generally out of the
east-southeast over the plains and will remain this way throughout
the forecast period.

Be advised that there are some roll clouds present downwind on the
lee (eastern) side of all of the major mountain ranges due to the
persistent westerly-southwesterly flow at the mid to upper levels,
and stronger winds near the surface of the highest peaks will also
produce some light to moderate turbulence in the vicinity of these
areas.

552 AM MST Fri Feb 12 2021

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Snow chances will increase today across the mountains, with
accumulations of 3 to 6 inches possible over the higher peaks of the
Continental Divide, and lighter amounts of 1 to 3 inches possible
over the remaining high terrain. At lower elevations, only light
snow or flurries are expected, and accumulations will be less than
an inch. Overnight, snow will taper off to flurries at most
locations, with a few snow showers lingering over the higher peaks
of the central mountains through the night.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

A system moving through the region is expected to bring
widespread moderate to heavy snow to the area late Saturday
afternoon through late Sunday afternoon. Snow accumulations of 8
to 24 inches are possible in the mountains, and generally 2 to 6
inches are possible in the lower terrain. Gusty winds across the
far eastern plains will likely also cause blowing snow, resulting
in hazardous driving conditions due to slick roadways and reduced
visibility.

Bitter cold temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees below zero with
dangerous wind chills of 20 to 30 degrees below zero are
anticipated early Monday morning along the I 25 corridor and
eastern plains. Frost bite will be possible in 30 minutes.

Another system brings a chance for more accumulating snow to the
Continental Divide Tuesday into Wednesday.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Weather conditions that meet reporting criteria for spotters will be
possible today and this evening over the mountains.
