Issued at 1145 PM MST Wed Dec 29 2021 Updated to increase winds across the region for tomorrow based on the latest guidance. Widespread wind gusts in excess of 35 mph are expected across much of the lower elevations. This in turn will lead to near critical to spotty critical fire weather conditions on the Plains for tomorrow afternoon. Mozley && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday) Issued at 316 PM MST Wed Dec 29 2021 Key Messages: 1) Snow ramps up again along the Continental Divide Thursday morning, with new Winter Storm Warnings issued for the higher peaks of the eastern San Juan, La Garita and Sawatch Ranges. 2) Breezy to windy over the I-25 corridor and eastern plains on Thursday, with increasing fire danger. Currently, web cams indicate a few snow showers still over the higher peaks along the Continental Divide this afternoon, though overall, looks like a temporary lull in accumulating snowfall has spread across the area. Generally cool and dry conditions elsewhere, with some breezy w-sw winds in the San Luis Valley and in the lee of the southern Sangres/srn I-25 corridor. Tonight, occasional orographic snow showers will persist along the Continental Divide through the night as fast wly mid-level flow continues, though with bulk of the upper energy still well to the west, suspect most activity won't drift too far east off the higher terrain. Dry and seasonably cold elsewhere, with some occasional downslope winds keeping temps milder in usual east slope locations. Thursday, western trough begins to deepen as new upper level jet energy moves onshore across the Pacific Coast. As a result, mid/upper level flow turns more swly with time across the area, with air mass along and west of the Divide moistening through the day. Pattern suggests a gradual ramp up of snowfall in the Sawatch/La Garitas and ern San Juans, and with at least moderate accumulations expected, will convert watches to warnings along the Divide starting at 12z. May eventually need some advisories for adjacent lower elevations as well, though bulk of snowfall away from the peaks won't come until Thu night or later. Farther east, gradually falling surface pressure and lee surface trough will produce gusty west winds by afternoon over the eastern mts/I-25 corridor and ern plains, with gusts 30-40 mph possible. While fire danger will increase with the wind, relative humidity will stay above the 15 percent threshold for a Red Flag Warning at most locations, and won't issue any highlights at this time. Better mixing will boost max temps upward somewhat Thu, and a few mid/upper 50s will return to the plains and portions of the I-25 corridor. .LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday) Issued at 316 PM MST Wed Dec 29 2021 Key Messages: 1) A strong storm system will impact southern Colorado late Friday into Saturday, bringing moderate to heavy snow to the mountains, and lighter snow across lower elevations. 2) A strong cold front will bring frigid Arctic air to southern Colorado Saturday into Sunday morning. Friday - Saturday... The first couple of days of the long term period will continue to bring active weather to southern Colorado. A trough will begin digging southward towards Colorado Friday. As this takes place, synoptic support and winds aloft will increase over the area. With the uptick in dynamics across the region, better synoptic ascent and orographic forcing will induce an increase in coverage and intensity of precipitation, primarily snow. Snow will first increase in this way over the western and central mountains as this system first starts to approach. The snow over these areas will likely be moderate to heavy, especially along the San Juan Mountains. As the trough pushes eastward across southern Colorado throughout the day Friday, snow will then materialize and increase across the eastern mountains. Moderate snow is likely along these areas, and trends have been slowly increasing the amounts here too. Across lower elevations in the San Luis Valley (SLV), given the strong dynamics passing over the region, light stratiform snow is likely to spill into the SLV during the afternoon Friday. Over the eastern plains, a cold front will drop southward late in the day Friday. Behind this cold front, winds at the surface will become more easterly and an upsloping regime will develop along the eastern mountains, which will aid in snow development/maintenance on the eastern sides of these mountains. The best upsloping looks to materialize along a rough line from the Wet Mountains and northward through the Rampart Range, where higher snow totals could be possible in comparison to other lower elevations. As the storm system treks eastward over the eastern plains late Friday into early Saturday, precipitation will follow the system. With the strong synoptics in place, light stratiform snow is likely along and east of the I25 corridor during that period. The trough will finally begin exiting the southern Colorado region by mid day Saturday, and with that, precipitation will decrease from the northwest to southeast throughout the day Saturday. Over all of southern Colorado, much colder air will fill in behind the cold front from late Friday, with the Saturday through Sunday morning being the coldest times. Given light winds and clear skies, Saturday night into Sunday morning will become gelid across the region, especially within the SLV. Temperatures will drop into the single digits to near 0°F along and east of the I25 corridor, and west of of I25, most will be below 0°F. With these cold temperatures, and despite light winds, windchills will be sub-zero for most of the area, with the coldest again being in the SLV, where windchills will likely be below -20°F. Sunday - Tuesday... The rest of the long term looks to remain relatively quiet weather wise. The GEFS and EPS ensemble models are still in agreement that a ridge of high pressure will build over the central US starting Sunday and remain in place through midweek next week. This pattern would bring drier weather to the region, and a warming trend would also be expected. There are hints in the models that another trough may pass over the region Wednesday, but the track of the system is still not clear. Regardless, this system would increase precipitation chances and cool things back down for the Pueblo forecast area. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Thursday night) Issued at 1046 PM MST Wed Dec 29 2021 VFR conditions with dry weather are expected across the TAF sites this period. The mountain snows around ALS will continue, but remain away from the site. Lighter winds this morning will be replaced with strengthening west southwest winds by mid day, and then likely increasing into the afternoon time frame.
