Key Messages

- Critical fire weather conditions are expected across Fremont,
Teller, and Huerfano Counties today with no changes made to the
current Red Flag Warning in place.

- Spotty critical fire weather conditions across the Upper Arkansas
River Valley and southeast mountains.

Pattern will continue to support dry weather with above normal
temperatures today. Given trends yesterday and with no big changes
in the overall setup today, did raise high temps several degrees
with temps expected to rise well into the 60s once again today
across the plains. Also, no changes to the dry air mass, with low
dew points and these high temps supporting really low RH values of 5
to 15 percent over much of southern CO. Winds are expected to be on
the lighter side for much of the area, except for the higher wind
prone areas in Fremont and Huerfano counties, as well as across
Teller county. In these locations, critical fire weather conditions
are expected, with no changes made to the current Red Flag Warning.

Thursday and Friday...A longwave trough of low pressure will be
positioned over the West Coast starting Thursday, with multiple
embedded shortwaves within the larger scale flow set to sweep across
the region. The first one will push across Thu and Fri, bringing
significant snow to the higher terrain as well as gusty winds.
First, the snow: snow is expected to begin along the Continental
Divide Thu morning, but then pick up in intensity and areal coverage
Thu evening through Fri. All of the mts should receive fresh snow,
but the heaviest hit areas are forecast to be the eastern San Juan
Mts as well as the higher terrain of Lake and Chaffee counties.
Therefore, decided to issue a Winter Storm Watch for those areas
starting Thu morning and lasting through Sat morning. These numbers
will likely change, but current forecast has 2 feet of new snow for
the eastern San Juans through this 48 hour period, while the central
mts receive a foot to foot and a half of new snow. The remaining
higher terrain will likely see lower amounts, and will probably be
included in advisories on following shifts. Second, the winds:
surface winds are expected to be out of the west to southwest and
gusty at times, though the strongest winds are forecast for Fri when
additional support from the upper jet comes into play. Latest model
runs indicate that this jet may be a bit weaker and positioned
farther north than previously thought, but still will be strong
enough to likely produce sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts
up to 50 or even 60 mph Fri afternoon and evening. As for temps, it
will not feel like a normal holiday season with well above normal
highs in the 40s to around 50F for the high valleys, and 60s to
around 70F for the plains.

Saturday and Sunday...The first shortwave should sweep out of the
area Sat morning so snow intensity is expected to weaken for Sat.
Therefore, the watch ends on Sat and only light additional snow
amounts for the mts are expected through the rest of the day and
into Sun. Another shortwave then pushes in late Sun. West to
southwest winds are forecast to around 15 to 20 mph on Sat, then
increase to 20 to 30 mph for Sun. Plan on high temps in the upper
30s to lower 40s for the high valleys, and 50s to around 60F for the
plains.

Monday and Tuesday...The upper pattern continues for the most part,
with more snow for the mts and wind across the lower elevations.
However, the upper low trough starts to slide east across Canada,
and colder more season-appropriate air begins to filter into CO.
High temps to start the next week are expected to only climb into
the 30s for the high valleys, and 40s to near 50F for the plains.

Critical fire weather conditions are expected across Fremont,
Teller, and Huerfano Counties today. Spotty critical fire weather
conditions are possible across the upper Arkansas River Valley and
the southeast mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Snow will spread into the Continental Divide Thursday morning and
continue through Tuesday. Significant new snowfall accumulations
will be likely across the eastern San Juan Mountains and the
central mountains, with lesser amounts expected over the Sangre De
Cristo Mountains. This storm system is expected to bring mainly
wind to the lower elevations with the potential for 40 to 50 mph
gusts Friday across the lower elevations and gusts up to 70 mph in
and near the mountains south of highway 50. Please monitor the
latest forecasts concerning this developing system.
