Key Message:

- Above normal temperatures with spotty critical fire weather
conditions are expected this afternoon.

Currently...temperatures are highly dependent on cloud cover and
elevation early this morning, with 40s along the eastern midslopes
and under the mountain wave cloud cover, and low lying clear areas
of the lower Arkansas River Valley in the 20s.  Temperatures
continue to drop across the San Luis Valley, with single digits so
far early this morning.  Winds are generally light over the lower
elevations, with breezy conditions across the higher terrain.

Today and Tonight...southern Colorado will be between upper ridging
to the east and an incoming upper trough off the West Coast.  This
will put broad southwesterly flow across Colorado.  Expect another
warm afternoon across southern Colorado, with upper 50s to lower 60s
across the Plains.  Areas over the San Luis Valley will see highs in
the 40s to near 50.  Spotty, critical fire weather conditions will
be possible this afternoon, mainly over the higher terrain, and down
along the lee slopes of the Eastern Mountains.

For tonight, embedded upper energy in the southwesterly flow will
spread mid and high level cloud cover across the region.  This will
impact temperatures overnight, with most areas remaining in the 40s
to upper 30s.  The exception will be the San Luis Valley where
temperatures will fall into the lower teens.  Westerly flow along
the mid slopes of the Eastern Mountains will also keep temperatures
warmer overnight as well.  No precipitation is forecast through the

Key Messages:

1)	Warm and dry weather Tuesday, with breezy to windy conditions
	leading to enhanced fire danger and critical fire weather
	conditions at times on the plains.

2) A strong storm system will bring mountain snows and very windy
	weather to the area Tuesday night and Wednesday, creating very
	hazardous travel and potential for rapid fire growth.

Vigorous upper trough moves onshore and into the Great Basin
during the day Tuesday, with increasing sw flow across CO. Snow
should break out over the San Juans by late Tue afternoon as
moisture increases, then become heavy in the evening as sw flow
deepens. Given potential for over a foot by late Wed, along with
winds gusting 50-70 mph, have hoisted a Winter Storm Watch for
higher elevations of the ern San Juans, but held off on any
highlights farther north and east as La Garitas and ern slopes
will be strongly shadowed initially. Farther east, lee surface
trough moves toward the KS border Tue, and with mid level flow
increasing to 30-40 kts, expect gusty winds and very dry boundary
layer to produce increased fire danger, especially along the KS
border. Kept the current Fire Weather Watch area intact for now,
but it will only take a slight drop in dewpoints to reach critical
conditions all the way back to I-25 Tue afternoon.

Tues night/Wed, snow intensity ramps up over the San Juans as
trough approaches, then snow showers spread to most of the
remaining mountains and interior valleys by early Wed morning.
Winds will increase rapidly overnight as well, and have started a
High Wind Watch for the Sangres/Wets at 11z, as models show some
80-90 kt mt top winds by sunrise. Winds at lower elevations will
respond to falling surface pressure on the plains overnight, with
ern mountain slopes gusting 30-40 kts by 12z, and portions of the
plains south of the Arkansas River gusting 25-35 kts after
midnight. Very sharp and fast moving Bora cold front rips across
the area Wed morning, as upper low lifts from the 4 corners into
Nebraska during the day. Window for extreme/damaging winds will
likely be immediately following the cold front, which is currently
forecast to move through the San Luis Valley and ern mts 12z-15z,
then eastward through the I-25 corridor and across the plains
15z-18z. Given progged 700 winds of 80 kts over the area and
strong downward motion, won't be surprised to see gusts 65-75 mph
widespread from the San Luis Valley eastward for a few hrs Wed
morning/early afternoon, before winds slowly subside toward
sunset. Have hoisted a High Wind Watch for the San Luis Valley,
most of the I-25 corridor and all the sern plains starting at 12z
Wed, which should be early enough to catch the expected morning
high winds. Left out El Paso/Teller Counties for now, as while it
will still be windy here, track of the upper low overhead keeps
the strongest winds and subsidence slightly south of the area.
High Fire Danger also expected on the plains as well, and have
hoisted another Fire Weather Watch from I-25 eastward from mid-
morning until early evening. Over the mountains, snow could be
briefly heavy Wed morning, especially in the Sawatch/Mosquito
Ranges, before tapering off quickly in the afternoon as upper low
races eastward.

Remainder of the extended forecast after Wed in general looks
cooler and breezy at times, as upper trough persists over the nrn
Rockies and series of waves slide quickly through the flow to the
north of CO. Not much precip with this pattern, save for
occasional rounds of snow showers over mainly the central
mountains as each wave passes.

central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Spotty, near critical fire weather conditions are possible this
afternoon over the higher elevations, down along the eastern lee
slopes due to breezy conditions and low humidity values.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

On Tuesday, fire danger will increase on the plains from late
morning through the afternoon, with the most critical conditions
near the Kansas border.

Snow will break out over the eastern San Juan mountains Tuesday
evening, becoming heavy at times overnight and through the morning
on Wednesday. Significant accumulations and widespread blowing
snow are possible, especially over higher west facing slopes near
Wolf Creek Pass. Snow will spread north and east to the central
and eastern mountains early Wednesday morning, with some light to
moderate accumulations possible before snowfall ends late
Wednesday afternoon.

Strong to damaging winds will develop over the mountains after
midnight Tuesday, then spread over much of the area during the
day Wednesday. Gusts as high as 80 mph will be possible over the
mountains, with 60 to 70 mph winds possible at lower elevations.
The window for the strongest winds looks to occur from around
sunrise Wednesday morning through mid-afternoon, before winds
slowly diminish by evening. These strong winds will bring high
fire danger to the region for much of the day Wednesday,
especially across the southeast plains where humidity will drop to
very low levels by late morning. Reduced visibility in blowing
dust may also occur Wednesday, especially across the southeast
plains.
