Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pueblo CO 401 AM MST Fri Mar 12 2021 .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 354 AM MST Fri Mar 12 2021 Today will be more of a transition day across southern Colorado as the potent low pressure system slowly moves towards us from the west. Models have delayed the onset of precipitation by several hours across the area, and have also been coming in slightly warmer the last few runs. Ensembles have been showing a mixed bag as far as precipitation is concerned, and while some high res models have a tendency to overdo things, they should still be taken into account as a 'worst case scenario'. Later this morning, scattered rain showers are expected to develop along the CO-KS border, and should expand north and slightly west by midday. Given the approaching upper-level forcing, some thunder certainly can't be ruled out, and there were already some convective storms drifting through southern KS earlier in the night, potentially even dropping some hail based on reflectivity signatures. The main determining factor for any thunderstorm development will be available instability. Ahead of the approaching system, flow aloft will strengthen, giving us no shortage of wind shear, and snow showers will begin to spread over the eastern San Juans and Continental Divide. As we transition into evening, snow will begin to fall over El Paso County, potentially mixed with some freezing drizzle, before spreading over the Sangre de Cristo and Wet Mountains. The precipitation will really start to build in towards the end of the short term period as the low pressure system approaches, growing in intensity from the south. Precipitation types will mainly depend on temperatures. The latest model runs have brought high temperatures down a few degrees, but overall models have been coming in warmer the last few runs. In general, the mountains are expected to see primarily snowfall while the far east plains should stick to rain and perhaps some more convective storms. The transition zone will be a bit east of the mountains and I-25, where some rain-snow mix and melting snow are expected, likely resulting in some slick road conditions. Again, some freezing rain/drizzle cannot be completely ruled out of the equation, although with the setup for this system being so inconsistent in the models, forecasts for the exact location of any freezing precipitation is low in confidence, although given the warm high temperatures for today over the southeast plains, the impacts should be minimal. .LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 354 AM MST Fri Mar 12 2021 ...Main concern continues to be how much snow will fall in Colorado Springs proper (and the S El Paso county region in general)... ...Blizzard potential decreasing somewhat... ...Everything else across the fcst area seems to be on track... The forecast shift early this morning began with a conference call with the WPC QPF folks in DC, and they leaned heavily on the Euro guidance for their qpf numbers and the fcst is based on this info. It still appears Teller and N El Paso county are in line for a significant storm and made no significant changes to the fcst for this region. Main concern continues to be S El Paso county and how much snow and when? Temps on Saturday day appear to be relatively warm (Highs above 32F), so any snow that accumulates will mainly be on grassy surfaces during the daylight hours on Saturday. HOWEVER...there is a chance that the snow which does fall could be convectively driven and it may come down "hot and heavy" for awhile, and a few quick inches could accumulate quickly. For this reason, I left the winter storm watch for S El Paso county "as is", and will allow the day shift to get a couple more model runs to look at and let them adjust the timing of this highlight. I am somewhat more confident that Saturday night/early sunday morning is when the best potential for heavy snow will fall across S El Paso county as the storm moves over SE CO and precip wraps around the backside of the storm. As for strong winds with this storm, this threat seems to be decreasing somewhat at this time. The reason for this is due to a vort lobe with the mid level cyclone will be located over NW CO during the Saturday night/Sunday time frame, and this is fcst to relax the lower level gradient somewhat, and this in turn will relax the winds over the Palmer Divide during this period. It still will likely be on the windy-side, but all of the NBM1 viewer ensemble guidance has backed off on the winds (25-35mph). Please keep in mind that things could change once again and it is not out of the question we may see blizzard conditions across the Pikes Peak region Sat night into Sunday. The overall highest impacts across the Pikes Peak region with this storm will likely occur Saturday night and Sunday. The best chance for the most intense snowfall rates will be during the early morning hours of Sunday. Some thunder will be possible nearly all areas (especially the plains) during Saturday. The strongest thunderstorm activity will occur over the plains, and this may occur in the morning hours. Some of these storms could be severe (SPC has a good part of the plains in MARGINAL RISK Saturday [and the slight risk is just on the other side of the OK/KS/CO state borders}). It would only take a slight nudge to the west to bring the TOR PROBs into the SE CO plains. Overall, quite a bit of much needed QPF is likely going to occur over a large amount of the region, and widespread 0.5 - 1.0" of liquid is expected over the plains. The higher elevations of the Pikes Peak region could see 1-2" of liquid. This snow is going to be on the wet side and is going to be more like "liquid cement", so its going to be heavy and it will have the potential to produce damage to trees, powerlines and roofs. The San Luis valley will likely see the least amount of impacts, and qpf from this event. The central mtns will likely see a foot+ of snow. The Upper Ark Rvr Valley may also do pretty well. There is still some uncertainty on how much snow is going to occur across the southern mtns/Wet Valley area/Fremont county and left this area in the winter storm watch. The system should clear out of the region by Monday. Another weather system (a rather potent tightly wound up system) is fcst to move across the region TUE night. This system may actually bring snow to all of the plains if it remains on track. Some patchy freezing drizzle will be possible across El Paso County late tonight through early Friday morning, though spotty light accumulations will remain restricted to cold elevated surfaces. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday A major winter storm will affect parts of the region from late Friday into early Monday. The highest impacts will be felt across the Pikes Peak region where heavy snow is expected. The heaviest snow and the strongest winds will occur across Teller County and northern El Paso County Saturday night and Sunday. One to two feet of snow will be possible. Across the Colorado Springs region, there will likely be a strong gradient on snowfall across the city, with the heaviest amounts to the immediate north and west sides of town. Travel in the Pikes Peak region will be difficult at best, and may become impossible Saturday night into Sunday night. Heavy snow will also occur in the mountains Friday through Monday, especially the central and southern mountains. Thunderstorms will be possible in all areas on Saturday and possibly on Sunday. Some strong storms could occur on the far eastern plains on Saturday. Along the southern I-25 corridor, snow accumulations are still uncertain. at this time it looks like 2 to 6 inches could occur with heaviest amounts near the mountains. Widespread rain will be possible over the eastern plains generally east of a line from La Junta to Kim. A half inch to one inch of rain is possible.
