...Snow to develop through the day Saturday...

Current water vapor imagery and upper air analysis is indicating
moderating westerly flow aloft across region as another short wave
trough is currently digging across the Pacific Northwest Coast.
Water vapor imagery is also indicating mid and upper level moisture
spreading across the Great Basin at this time.

Latest models are coming into better agreement of said Pacific
Northwest system continuing to dig across the Great Basin tonight,
and developing a closed upper low near the Four Corners region
Saturday morning before continuing to dig southeast into central
New Mexico Saturday evening. Movement of this system will allow
for low level upslope flow to develop and deepen across eastern
Colorado tonight, with clouds expected to lower and thicken across
the plains through early Saturday morning. This, combined with
moisture and lift associated with diffluent south to southwest
flow with the Four Corners low, will allow for widespread,
generally light snowfall, to develop and spread across much of
south central and southeast Colorado through the day on Saturday.
Snow, looks to start across the ContDvd and the eastern mountains
through the late morning, with light to moderate snow then
spreading across the high mountain valleys, the I-25 Corridor and
the southeast plains into the late afternoon. Snowfall of 1 to 3
inches will be possible through Saturday afternoon, greatest
across the southern mountains. With more snow expected Saturday
night into Sunday morning, I, in conjunction with the long term
forecaster, have issued winter weather advisories starting at 21Z
Saturday for the southeast mountains (more details follow in the
long term discussion).

As for temperatures, clouds spreading and lowering across the
area through the night will allow for overnight lows to be around
seasonal levels, with highs on Saturday expected to below average
mainly in the 30s across the plains, with mainly 20s across the
higher terrain.

Saturday night and Sunday...

The major shortwave trough affecting the region is going to continue
to propagate through the CWA into early Sunday morning. This is a
very potent system with a pocket of cold air aloft of values around -
30C at the 500mb level, however, it is very fast moving and
therefore will produce an abundance of snowfall over a short period
of time. The center of the low, which has undergone some
cyclogenesis and is anticipated to be over central New Mexico, will
advance further southeast towards Texas. As it does, there will
likely be an increase of wrap-around moisture associated with it
with overrunning in the warm sector, coupled with some upslope
enhancement in the northeastern quadrant of this system, which will
produce some substantial snowfall in a relatively short period of
time over the southern and southeastern portion of the CWA. During
Saturday night, 700 mb level wind flow looks to be favorable for
some upslope enhancement, with a east becoming more of a north-
northeasterly flow, will provide some of the heaviest snowfall
totals on the eastern slopes of the southern Sangre de Cristo
Mountains, Wet Mountains, and over the Raton Mesa, as well as the
foothills and western plains along the I-25 corridor in Huerfano and
Las Animas Counties. Snowfall totals will generally be from 1 to 3
inches east of the I-25 corridor, Sawatch Range, and in the San Luis
Valley, 2 to 4 inches in the foothills west of the I-25 corridor
north of the US-50, 3 to 5 inches along the I-25 corridor south of
the US-50, Monument Hill and the east facing slopes of the Rampart
Range, 4 to 6 inches on the higher peaks of the Sangre de Cristos,
San Juan and Wet Mountains, and 6 to 8 inches and even some isolated
areas of amounts greater than 8 inches on the east facing slopes of
the southern Sangre de Cristos, Wet Mountains, and over the Raton
Mesa. There will also be some gusty winds primarily out of the
northeast for much of the region with the higher gusts of up to 25
mph on the higher peaks of the Wet Mountains and Sangre de Cristos
and 20 mph over the southeastern plains, which could bring wind
chill vales as low as -10F to -20F in some areas of the higher
peaks, and as low as 15F in the southeastern plains. Low
temperatures for Saturday night will be in the upper teens to lower
20s for the plains, and single digits to -5F for the San Luis Valley
and higher mountains and valleys. Clearing skies as the low pressure
will exit the region early Sunday morning, as it continues to
progress southeastward into Texas and will draw in some cooler
temperatures behind it as it does, keeping high temperatures cold
and below average for Sunday.

Monday through Friday...

After the weekend system exits the region, ridging moves over the
western third of the CONUS. This keeps us in generally northwest
flow aloft, resulting in fairly dry and quiet weather for the
workweek. With the ridge in place through the week, a gradual
warming trend can be expected as well Temperatures are anticipated
to warm into the lower to mid 50s across the plains by midweek while
the high valleys should see temps in the mid 30s to around 40 by
then.

.AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening)
Issued at 251 PM MST Fri Jan 8 2021

VFR conditions with generally light diurnally driven wind regimes
expected at COS, PUB and ALS through 12Z, with increasing high
clouds through the late afternoon and evening hours. Cigs are
expected to lower across the eastern plains through the early
morning hours as low level upslope deepens ahead of an upper level
system digging into the Four Corners region tonight. MVFR and IFR
cigs will be in the offing at the terminals, especially COS and PUB
after 12Z with light snowfall developing through the late morning
and early afternoon. Snow accumulations of up to an inch will be
possible at the termainals through the tail end of this taf
period.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday

A winter storm will spread snow into the Continental Divide
Saturday morning before expanding it southeastward into the
southeast mountains and adjacent plains Saturday afternoon and
night. Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches will be possible for the
east facing slopes of the Sangre De Cristo and Wet Mountains,
especially south of highway 50. Three to 6 inches will be
possible across the southern I-25 corridor from Colorado City to
Raton and the northern slopes of the Raton Ridge. Lighter snowfall
amounts of up to 2 inches can be expected elsewhere with some
spotty heavier amounts of up to 4 inches possible across the
Palmer Divide and east facing slopes of the eastern San Juan
mountains and southwest portions of the San Luis Valley. Snow
will end from north to south Sunday morning. These snowfall
amounts are still prone to change depending on the exact storm
track, so please continue to monitor the latest forecasts.
Prepare for winter driving conditions if you have travel plans
across southern Colorado Saturday through Sunday morning.
