Let warnings/advisories along the Continental Divide expire, watch
for late tonight into Sat remains in place, though will likely
upgrade a few locations to warnings with the new forecast later
this afternoon.

...Key Messages

1. Winter storm along the southwest mountains and Continental Divide
wanes a bit today.

2. Breezy to windy conditions with elevated fire weather concerns
across the plains this afternoon...

Still keeping an eye on the on-going moderate snowfall over the
southwest mountains this morning though it looks like it has waned a
bit on CDOT cameras. The continued trend throughout the day will be
for improvement and the late morning ending time for the current
winter storm warning and advisories looks good. This being said, the
lull in activity will be fairly short lived. More on that below.

Farther east, the dry days continue under mostly sunny skies. We'll
change it up a bit, compared to Tuesday, and back the winds more
from the west-southwest and knock off a couple of degrees too. The
slight temperature decrease will keep relative humidity values just
high enough to not warrant Red Flag Warnings today, but as we've
seen lot recently the stronger winds can make up for the higher
RH's. Elevated fire weather conditions persist from I-25 eastward
today.

3. New Year's Eve Night and Day likely to have snow across a broad
region...

Thursday - Friday...The next wave in the wave train enters pushing
more moisture into the southwest mountains and the Continental
Divide. Winter Storm Watches remain in effect for these regions at
this time as we would like to conclude the current on-going moderate
snowfall over these same regions before introducing another lengthy
Winter Storm Warning. This looks to be another 36-48 hour moderate
to heavy snowfall event with 1-2.5 inches of liquid producing
another foot or two of snow. We're definitely making up for lost
time, that's for sure!

Elsewhere, warmer and drier conditions persist which has been an
unfortunate theme since September? Given all the activity taking
place over the southwest and central mountains, we continue to get
better downsloping in the lee of the eastern mountains as
temperatures warm back to above late December averages. Still not
seeing a widespread red flag kind of day out east but locally
critical conditions are very possible each afternoon, I-25 and
eastward.

Friday Night - Saturday...So it's the new year, and what have we
done? Changed the pattern, that's what! We finally see some light at
the end of the snow drought across much of the Front Range and
eastern Colorado plains. Not trying to spike the football while
still on the 10-yard line, but wow finally a little excitement that
isn't just straight wind and moving dirt across state lines. Even if
this wave ends up being a really quick hitter, which looks likely,
lee cyclogenesis producing weak upslope flow with some low-level
baroclinicity has our attention. There are some positives going for
the system regarding snow potential, overnight arrival, good
moisture origin, and mid-level trough south of previous troughs. The
negatives, quick moving system, positively tilter mid-level trough,
and the fact that we're still in a nasty drought. Fairly cold
temperatures expected with and behind this wave as highs will be
well below average. All-in-all, let's just ring in the new year with
some good thoughts and vibes and finally put some snow down across a
broad region.

Sunday - Tuesday...Ridging kicks back in and the fun and excitement
of the snow potential comes to a swift end. A rather large break,
relatively speaking, in action all across the region commences with
ridging becoming more flat and a pseudo-zonal flow aloft takes
place. We should quickly rebound temperature-wise as well and bump
us back up several degrees above early January averages.

VFR at all taf sites the next 24 hrs. At KALS, west winds will
gust 20-25 kts into early evening then diminish. At KCOS,
prevailing wind will be s-se this afternoon, though there could be
a few brief periods of gusty sw winds 19z-23z. Winds then diminish
overnight, becoming w-nw Thu morning. At KPUB, prevailing winds
will be w-sw, with potential for brief shifts to e-se through the
afternoon. Overnight, winds will remain generally w-nw. On Thur,
gusty west winds develop at all sites after 19z.

Snow showers and flurries are expected along the Continental
Divide today and tonight, though any accumulations will be minor.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Heavier mountain snow, Continental Divide and southwest
mountains, commences early Thursday morning and continues through
Saturday morning. A light accumulation is also possible late
Friday night into Saturday morning along the I-25 corridor and
points east.

Elevated to locally critical fire weather conditions are expected
Thursday and Friday over the plains.
