expire, however, near critical fire weather conditions will
continue throughout the overnight over the foothills of the
southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday)

Key messages:

1) Mostly dry conditions with lower relative humidity values,
coupled with some stronger and gusty winds over the higher
elevations of El Paso County, as well as western Park, Teller, and
the lower elevations of eastern Huerfano counties, has allowed for
critical fire weather criteria to be in place for this afternoon.
These conditions are expected to end by 5pm as winds should decrease
below the threshold by this time.

2) Mostly dry conditions with above average temperatures will
continue to be prevalent over most locations of southeast Colorado
for the next 24 hours.

3) Troughing upstream will allow for some snow showers to develop
later in the afternoon for tomorrow over the Central Mountains and
northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Detailed discussion:

Currently...

There are some critical fire weather conditions due to dry and gusty
winds out of the W-SW over several locations that are currently
under a Red Flag Warning, although these winds are expected to
decrease below the threshold by the end of the warning expiration
and therefore it is not anticipated to need an extension at this
time.

Tonight...

Troughing over northwestern CONUS will keep the W-SW'ly flow in
place over southeast Colorado. There will be some higher level
clouds continuing to move over the area due to the baroclinic leaf
associated with the troughing upstream. These clouds could help to
modify temperatures to be a bit warmer for overnight lows over some
locations due to radiational cooling being slightly hindered.
Downsloping winds will keep some of the locations of the plains west
of the I-25 corridor slightly warmer due to mixing and adiabatic
warming, therefore these areas of the plains will only cool to
around the upper 30s to low 40s, otherwise the rest of the plains
will experience minimum temperatures to be in the low 20s to mid
30s, with mainly teens over the higher mountains and single digits
in the high mountain valleys.

Tomorrow...

High pressure conditions with mainly dry conditions will continue to
be in place for most areas of the CWA. The troughing upstream will
keep the wind flow to remain out of the west to southwest for most
areas. The winds will increase again during the late morning and
into the afternoon, however, the mid RH values displayed by the
majority of ensemble members do not show these values to be low
enough to meet the criteria for critical fire weather conditions.
There will be increasing clouds throughout the afternoon in the
lower and mid levels over the higher terrain and some snow showers
will develop with the persistent SW'ly flow and upslope enhancement
in the windward side of the Central and northern Sangre de Cristo
Mountains. Best areas of seeing snow showers will be the Sawatch
Range, as well as the San Juan Mountains, where up to 2 inches of
new snowfall could occur. All other areas will be mainly dry, with
only some passing mid and higher level clouds. The downsloping winds
will cause max temperatures to be well above the seasonal average,
especially over the plains. High temperatures will be generally in
the 60s to around 70 for the plains, upper 40s to 50s for the higher
mountain valleys, and 20s to 30s for high country. -Stewey

.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Wednesday)

Active weather pattern expected for Southern Colorado through the
extended period, especially over the Mountains. Near persistent
snowfall is forecast along the Continental Divide, and periods of
strong winds over the Plains.

Thursday night through Friday night...several factors of concern
during this period including heavy snow over the Mountains and
high wind potential for the Eastern Mountains and Plains. A strong
upper jet with embedded energy is forecast to strengthen across
Colorado. Light snow will be ongoing over the Continental Divide
Thursday evening, and should increase in coverage and intensity by
Friday morning. Periods of heavy snow are expected on Friday, as
the upper embedded wave moves across the area. Snow will decrease
in intensity Friday night into Saturday morning as the upper wave
departs the area. Snowfall totals over the higher elevations of
the Continental Divide could see 1 to 2 feet, with locally higher
amounts possible, especially over the San Juan Range. Lower
elevations of the Continental Divide will see 5 to 10 inches with
locally higher amounts possible. Snow will spread east on Friday
into the Sangre de Cristo Range, with minor amounts expected
there. There could be some spillover off the Mountains into the
Plains west of I-25, with no accumulations expected there. The
rest of the Plains will remain dry.

As for winds, they could be quite strong. It does appear there
could be a brief period Thursday night into Friday morning for
downslope winds off the Rampart Range into western portions of El
Paso County. Wind gusts of 65 mph are possible, especially near
the Air Force Academy. As the upper jet moves into the area Friday
morning, shear profiles become less favorable for downslope flow
and winds should diminish below high wind criteria Friday morning.

Down south and across the Plains, the potential exists for strong
winds due to the upper level just. Expect strong winds over the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains late Thursday night, with strong winds
spreading east into the Plains by Friday morning. This area will
see brute force winds, with gusts near 80 mph over the Mountains,
and near 70 mph on the Plains. The strongest winds look to remain
confined to south of Highway 50. Those traveling in light weight
or high profiles vehicles on north to south highways, including
I-25, should prepare for strong cross winds, as those vehicles
could tip over. In addition, the strong winds and dry soils will
produce areas of blowing dust on the Plains causing reduced
visibilities for travelers.

Winds should gust into the evening, dissipating overnight into
Saturday. Temperatures on Saturday will remain warm, with upper
60s to lower 70s on the Plains.

Saturday...expect a brief lull in activity before the next storm
system arrives on Sunday. A few light snow showers are expected on
the Continental Divide. Temperatures on the Plains will be
slightly cooler, but still above seasonal averages. Highs will top
out in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Sunday through Wednesday...several more upper waves are forecast
to move across southern Colorado through this period. Each will
bring a period of moderate to heavy snowfall for the Mountains,
and breezy conditions across the Plains. Snow on Sunday could be
heavy for the Continental Divide. A strong upper level jet will
move across the region as well, with another round of potential
high winds possible across the Plains. This wave will quickly exit
by Monday, with more energy moving across Tuesday and Wednesday.
Overall, temperatures will into the 40s across the Plains for
early next week. The Plains look to remain dry.  Mozley

Critical fire weather conditions are expected across Fremont,
Teller, and Huerfano Counties today. Spotty critical fire weather
conditions are possible across the upper Arkansas River Valley and
the southeast mountains.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Snow will spread into the Continental Divide Thursday morning and
continue through Tuesday. Significant new snowfall accumulations
will be likely across the eastern San Juan Mountains and the
central mountains, with lesser amounts expected over the Sangre De
Cristo Mountains. This storm system is expected to bring mainly
wind to the lower elevations with the potential for 40 to 50 mph
gusts Friday across the lower elevations and gusts up to 70 mph in
and near the mountains south of highway 50. Please monitor the
latest forecasts concerning this developing system.
