.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Tuesday)
Issued at 355 PM MDT Mon Apr 5 2021

...Critical Fire Weather conditions expected across southern CO on
Tuesday...

Upper low across OR/ID will drop southeastward across CO tomorrow
with EC and GFS in better agreement with the upper low centered over
north central CO by 00z Wed.  Winds have increased across southern
CO today ahead of the system with critical fire weather conditions
spreading into the San Luis Valley and I-25 corridor this afternoon.
Expanded the Red Flags to include southern El Paso county earlier
today which appears to be working out.  Still monitoring LHX but so
far haven't seen gusts strong enough to warrant any further
expansions to the east.  As for records, have broken the record high
at KCOS hitting 79 degrees (old record 77 in 1991).  Have tied the
PUB record so far of 86 in 1991.  KALS still has a few degrees to go
to break the old record of 73 in 1943.  Clouds may be hindering
heating some across the valley but with a few hours to go and some
clearing moving in from the west, there is still some time for a
tie.

Winds across the plains will decrease this evening but humidity
recoveries will be poor as enhanced westerly winds into lee side
surface low will keep temperatures on the warm side.  Winds increase
again early Tuesday as the storm system approaches.  This combined
with the poor humidity recover will result in critical fire weather
conditions being met early in the morning across southern areas, as
soon as winds increase.  There are still some challenges with the
cold front timing across the plains with models suggesting the front
may push into northern El Paso county and Kiowa county before
stalling then getting a secondary push in the late afternoon/early
evening as surface pressure gradient tightens and winds become
convectively enhanced along the cold front.  Could see some spotty
high wind criteria in the late afternoon across the plains, though
high res models are rather spotty with this depiction and too
localized. This may be better handled with convective warnings if
needed.  Another concern will be blowing dust.  Most likely areas
for this to occur will be across the San Luis Valley and southern
plains along and south of highway 50.  Gusts in the afternoon up to
45 mph will be possible with a sudden wind shift in the late
afternoon and evening where gusts to around 50 to even 60 mph will
be possible.  Will have to watch how this evolves as blowing dust
warnings may be needed if visibility gets reduced sufficiently.

And finally, some snow will spread into the Continental Divide and
northern El Paso county during the late afternoon along and behind
the cold front.  This will be a convective snow NAM showing a few
hundred J/kg of CAPE along and behind the front.  Could see a rumble
of thunder as well, and again this could help mix strong winds aloft
to the surface with some localized high wind gusts.  Snow will be
brief, but could see a quick inch or two of slush on the grass and
colder surfaces in northern El Paso county.  Given the residual
warmth in the ground, not expecting impacts to travel.  But
visibility could be reduced significantly at times which would be
the primary hazard.

Overall a very active day in store with weather running the gamut
of strong winds, high fire danger, thunderstorms across northern
portions of the southeast plains, and even some snow.  Please
monitor the latest forecasts for possible changes. -KT

.LONG TERM...(Tuesday night through Monday)
Issued at 355 PM MDT Mon Apr 5 2021

...Strong Cold Front Tuesday night with Rain and Snow Showers...

Tuesday night-Wednesday...Latest model guidance continues to come
into better agreement of a compact upper low translating across
south central Colorado and into east central Colorado late Tuesday
afternoon, with said upper low moving into west central Kansas
Tuesday night and into eastern Kansas through the day Wednesday.
The movement of this system and its associated surface low sends a
strong cold front across eastern Colorado later Tuesday afternoon
and evening, with gusty north to northwest winds of 25 to 45 mph
in its wake. Latest models also indicate a small ribbon of cape
(ml cape around 300 J) along this boundary, leading to the
potential for scattered showers and a few thunderstorms across the
plains Tuesday afternoon and evening. While convection does not
look to be widespread, there will be the potential for localized
high wind criteria (gusts >=58 mph) across the plains with progged
downdraft capes of 500-1000 J/KG). There is also the potential
for some wet snow, especially along the Palmer Divide Tuesday
evening, with accumulations of slushy inch or two, mainly on
grassy/elevated surfaces. However, with how warm it has been over
the past few days, do not believe there will be too many impacts
from the snow.

Gusty northwest winds, strongest across the eastern plains, as well
as dry subsident air across the area on Wednesday, could once again
lead to critical fire weather conditions Wednesday afternoon. The
areas of highest fire danger will be across the high mountain
valleys and into portions of the I-25 Corridor, however, will not
issue any fire weather watches at this time.

As for temperatures, Tuesday night lows look to be in the 20s and
30s areawide, coldest across the higher terrain, with Wednesday high
temperatures mainly in the 60s to lower 70s across the lower
elevations and in the 40s and 50s across the higher terrain.

Wednesday night-Friday...Moderating west to northwest flow aloft
across the area through Thursday increases again Thursday night and
Friday, as an upper trough translates across the Northern Rockies
and into the High Plains. Models differ on the location of this
system, with the EC a tad further south than the GFS, sending a
stronger front across the area on Friday. For now, stayed with the
blended model solution of dry and warm weather across the area on
Thursday, with highs in the 70s across the lower elevations on
Thursday, and in the 50s and 60s across the higher terrain.
Temperatures cool some 5 to 15 degrees on Friday behind the passing
system, with the most notable cooling across the plains, along with
a few possible showers over the higher terrain.

Saturday-Monday...Dry and warmer weather across the area on Saturday
gives way to slightly cooler and more unsettled weather on Sunday,
as another upper trough moves across the northern Rockies. Models
continue to differ on the location and strength of this system on
Sunday, which leads to more uncertainty in the weather into early
next week, as a broad upper trough takes shape across the Great
Basin.

At KCOS, VFR the next 24 hrs. Winds could briefly become gusty out
of the north for a few hrs 11z-18z as a weak boundary drops south
through the area, before w-sw flow increases from 18z into mid-
afternoon. Strong cold front will then drop south through the
terminal 22z-23z, with north winds gusting to 40 kts into the
evening, before slowly subsiding after sunset. Low risk of a vcsh
or even vcts over the higher terrain north of the terminal 00z-
03z, though most models keep activity far enough away from the
airport to preclude any mention in the taf for now.

At KPUB, VFR the next 24 hrs. W-SW winds will increase and become
gusty 15z-16z, the gradually become more w-nw in the afternoon,
with gusts of 30-40 kts likely. Cold front will drop south through
the terminal 23z-00z, with a wind shift to the north and potential

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Dangerous fire weather conditions are expected Tuesday morning
into the evening, from the San Luis Valley, east across much of
the Plains. Westerly winds will gust in excess of 40 mph, with
some areas gusting in excess of 50 mph. This will combine with
humidity values well under 15 percent to produce extreme fire
weather conditions. Please do not burn on Tuesday. In addition to
the fire weather concerns, the gusty winds will likely produce
areas of blowing dust, which could produce hazardous travel
conditions across the region due to reduced visibilities. One or
two thunderstorms may be possible late this afternoon from the
Palmer Divide and areas north of Highway 50.  Light snow may be
possible on the Palmer Divide and Teller County. Up to an inch may
be possible on elevated or grassy surfaces.

Near critical fire weather conditions will remain possible over
the San Luis Valley on Wednesday.
