Issued at 225 PM MDT Fri Apr 23 2021 Main forecast concerns/challenges: 1) Thunderstorms with a possible isolated stronger storm or two across the plains through mid evening. 2) Increasing fire weather concerns on Saturday, with a Red Flag Warning now in effect for the San Luis Valley, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties. 3) Multiple critical fire weather days are expected. Sunday and Monday will have widespread critical fire weather conditions over the mountain valleys and the plains. 4)Cold front develops over the region on Tuesday brining scattered rain and snow showers and gusty northerly winds over the region and the potential for a rumble of thunder. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 225 PM MDT Fri Apr 23 2021 Main upper trough continues to pass overhead this afternoon with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms developing across parts of southern CO. The highest coverage of precip at this time is across the eastern plains, along and south of Highway 50, where surface trough with higher focus, dewpoints, and instability reside. While scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms will remain possible anywhere across southern CO into this evening, think the highest coverage of showers and storms will continue to be across the eastern plains along and south of Highway 50. Would anticipate this development to become more focused over far southeast CO with time this afternoon into early evening, as the surface trough pivots to the east. Instability and overall shear will limit the severe threat, but still can't rule out a stronger storm or two with gusty winds and small hail the main threats. Precip development will quickly come to an end by around the mid evening time frame. A return to more zonal flow is then expected later tonight into Saturday. A warming trend begins on Saturday, with above normal temps returning to the area. These warmer temps, low humidity, and increasing winds will support critical fire weather conditions on Saturday. At this time, highest potential will be across the San Luis Valley and far southern I-25 corridor, and have replaced the Fire Weather Watch with a Red Flag Warning for Saturday. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Friday) Issued at 225 PM MDT Fri Apr 23 2021 Saturday Night: A Red Flag Warning is set to expire at 8PM Saturday night over the San Luis Valley and the southern I-25 corridor due to RH values increasing to non-critical fire weather values, though gusty winds are expected to continue into the night on Saturday and into early Sunday morning. Sunday and Monday: An upper level closed low / sharp trough is expected to reach the Great Basin by Sunday morning, which will begin to push its associated jet streak, oriented form southwest to northeast, over southern Colorado. The result will be widespread synoptically forced winds over the mountains, mountain valleys, and plains. Compressional heating will warm temperatures to above average levels and dew point values will be very low due to a very well mixed atmosphere. Overall, widespread critical fire weather conditions are expected over the mountain valleys and the plains. There are varying differences with how quickly and strongly the low will evolve over Colorado, though. The deterministic ECMWF has a slower and stronger moving closed low that propagates further south, whereas the GFS has a weaker, more progressive trough with an earlier precipitation onset time for the central mountains. The ensembles, however, agree a bit more with each other and look more like the deterministic GFS, which puts more confidence towards that model. By late Monday night snow and rain showers are expected to begin over the Continental Divide with snow levels around 7,000 - 8,000 feet. Tuesday and Wednesday: Snow will continue to fall over the mountains through Tuesday and a cold front is expected to propagate over the region Tuesday morning. The impacts behind the front will be scattered rain showers with the potential for a rumble of thunder, and gusty winds. Convective snow showers are also possible over the eastern mountains after the cold front, as well. Lingering snow showers are expected over the mountains on Wednesday as a strong jet axis remain overhead, but the showers are expected to be confined over the mountains. Cooler temperatures are also expected on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the cooler air mass developing from the north. Thursday and Friday: An upper level ridge develops over the region on Thursday and Friday. Generally dry conditions are expected, with an isolated snow shower over the mountains possible. A warming trend begins on Thursday, as well. && .AVIATION...(For the 00Z TAFS through 00Z Saturday evening) Issued at 225 PM MDT Fri Apr 23 2021 KCOS, KPUB, KALS: VFR conditions are expected over the next 24 hours for all three TAF sites. Convective rain showers and isolated thunderstorms should begin to diminish heading into late afternoon and evening; still, if a TAF site were to find itself under one of these remaining showers/thunderstorms, MFR, and possibly lower flight categories, would be expected. Showers and thunderstorms will also produce gusty outflow winds that could affect terminal sites even if a shower or thunderstorm is not directly overhead. A significant Pacific weather system will begin to affect the region Monday night through Tuesday.
