HRRR and high resolution FV3 are indicating very strong winds
developing in the Pikes Peak/Colorado Springs region by around 10
to 11AM. High resolution models have wind gusts around 90 mph over
Colorado Springs. Models can have difficulties pinpointing the
exact location of the high winds. But, models clearly indicate
wind gusts of 60 to 70 knots in the Colorado Springs region, with
some areas having wind gusts to 90 knots. --PGW--

...High Impact Wind Storm will bring high risk of extreme fire
danger along with damaging wind potential and dangerous blowing
dust...

Currently...

Winds were ramping up across the region at 3 am, mainly south of
US50. Per water vapor imagery, a "bowling ball" of a trough was
located over NE AZ and was progressing steadily east-northeast. A
line of solid convection (CGs indicated) was located over the
western slope, generally at the longitude of KGJT. It was quite mild
over the region, with ambient temps in the 40s and 50s across the
plains, 30s in the larger valleys and 20s mtns.

Today...

High res guidance continues to indicate a very strong wind field
associated with this short wave moving across the region. Widespread
75 to 100 mph SURFACE winds are shown across the Sangre De Cristo
mtns, the Wet mtns and the east slopes of the Rampart range. A large
majority of the 700 mb windfield over the region this morning is in
the 80 to 95 mph range. There is a very good chance that as the
squall moves across the area this morning, very strong winds will be
associated with it, with gusts in the 80 mph range possible. The
winds will remain strong throughout the morning and early afternoon
and slowly decrease later this afternoon.

As for squall passage, expect the squall to be located along the
backbone of the CONTDVD around 13 UTC (6 AM), the San Luis Valley,
Sangre De Cristo mtns around 14 UTC (7 AM), The I-25 corridor at 15
UTC (8 AM), and out near the Longitude of KLHX by 9 AM. Very strong
winds may occur with this squall as any precip will evaporate with
it and this will help bring the stronger winds down to the surface.

Fire weather conditions will only get worse as the morning
progresses as dwpts in the 30s and U20s early this morning will fall
into the single digits by noontime across most of the plains.
Although ambient temps will be cool today, RH values will likely
fall into the 12-17% range by early afternoon. With the strong
damaging winds, I expect we will see some powerlines come down due
to the strong winds, and this may lead to fire starts across the
area.

Another major concern will be intense dust plumes lofted by the
strong winds which will reduce visibility to near zero at times
across all of the plains. I anticipate we will need to issue short
term DUST STORM WARNINGS for parts of the region later this AM.

Large vehicles are strongly discouraged from traveling today,
especially along N-S highways.

As for snow in the mtns, once the trough axis moves through I expect
the snow will rapidly decrease, especially over the southwest mtns
and the Sangres. Snow will linger into the afternoon across the
central mtns but should end by later in the afternoon.

By late afternoon winds will diminish across the region.

Tonight...

Winds will significantly diminish by early evening, with some gusty
winds possible on the east slopes of the southern mtns. Temps tonite
will fall into the upper 10s to L20s on the plains and single digits
across the mtns/valleys. Clear skies are anticipated.

.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)

There is good agreement among the operational solutions early this
morning, and ensemble spreads are low. This leads to higher
confidence through the extended period, with models converging on
a drier solution for much of the period.

Thursday into Friday...a baggy upper trough is forecast to slowly
move southeast across Colorado. Breezy conditions are expected
across the region Thursday, with spotty near critical fire weather
conditions over the Plains. Cooler temperatures will help keep
humidity values slightly elevated, with values hovering around 15
percent. Afternoon highs on Thursday will top out in the upper 40s
to mid 50s across the lower elevations. Along the Continental
Divide, snow will develop by Thursday afternoon, and prevail into
Friday morning. At this time, snowfall looks light, with an inch
or two possible, mainly north of Cottonwood Pass. Snow should come
to an end by Friday afternoon as the upper system slowly moves
away from the area, and upper ridging begins to shift east into
the state. Afternoon highs in the 40s to mid 50s are expected on
Friday afternoon.

Saturday into Monday...upper level ridging will shift east across
Colorado for the weekend, into early next week. Dry conditions are
expected to prevail. Temperatures will remain cool on Saturday
behind a cold front that arrives during the early morning hours.
Highs will only reach into the 40s. By Saturday, temperatures are
expected to warm, with mid to upper 50s across the Plains. These
temperatures will continue into Monday.

Tuesday and Wednesday...the upper pattern becomes more zonal for
early the middle next week. Snow chances look to increase along
the Continental Divide with accumulating snow possible. Wind will
also be on the increase, with some signals indicating another
round of gusty winds, and possible fire weather concerns. With the
breezy conditions, temperatures look to warm into the lower 60s.

An intense short wave will move across the TAF sites this morning,
This system will bring VERY STRONG westerly winds to all the TAF
sites this morning and early afternoon, with winds gradually
decreasing later this afternoon. An intense squall will move across
KALS around 14 UTC this morning and 15-16 UTC at KCOS and KPUB.
Intense, but brief snow will be possible at KALS with the squall
passage, and a mix of precip will be possible at KCOS and KPUB. Some
accumulation will be possible at KALS but KPUB and KCOS should not
see any accumulations of snow (if it snows at all). After the squall
goes by, strong westerly winds will continue for several hours with
gusts in teh 45 to 60 knt range possible. Stronger gusts may be
associated with the squall boundary. Brief IFR conditions will be
possible with the squall line due to heavy precip and low cigs.

Winds will gradually decrease by later this afternoon with much
lighter winds by evening.

This hazardous weather outlook is for portions of central...east
central...south central and southeast Colorado.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

A powerful Pacific storm system will move over the state today. This
system will bring very strong winds to most of the region through
mid afternoon. Winds could gusts as high as 80 to 90 mph over all of
the region. These winds will be capable of causing wind damage to
structures, along with significant tree damage.

The strong winds combined with lowering humidity values will cause
extreme fire weather conditions over the plains today. Any fire
which may start will spread very rapidly. If a fire starts near you,
you may have only minutes to evacuate your location. Powerlines
being blown down will have the potential to start fires.

Intense areas of blowing dust are also expected. This dust will
reduce the visibility to zero at times over the plains. This dust
will also cause breathing problems for some folks.

Travel will be difficult due to the strong westerly winds. High
profile vehicles will be prone to being tipped over due to the
intense winds.

A snow squall will move across the mountains and valleys early this
morning, and this squall will likely reduce visibility to near zero
as it moves across the region. When the squall reaches the plains,
precipitation with it will decrease, and temperatures will be
warmer. However, evaporating precipitation within the strong mid
level wind fields may bring very strong winds down to the surface.

Heavy snow over the mountains this morning will end late this
morning or early afternoon.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Thursday through Tuesday

Light snow is expected along the Continental Divide Thursday into
Friday. An inch or two of snow accumulations is possible, mainly
north of Cottonwood Pass. Better chances for snow along the
Continental Divide are possible Tuesday and Wednesday.

Spotty, near critical fire weather conditions are possible on the
Plains Thursday afternoon due to gusty winds and humidity values
nearing 15 percent.
