.SYNOPSIS...
Lingering light showers will affect Gila County through this
afternoon, while breezy to locally windy conditions will persist
along the Colorado River and southeastern California. The weather
pattern will likely remain unsettled into the weekend as another
slow moving weather system moves into the region starting
Thursday. This system will bring widespread windy conditions for
Thursday afternoon, along with additional chances for light
showers mainly across central and eastern Arizona. Below normal
temperatures will last through at least Friday before a warming
trend likely pushes readings above normal starting Sunday.

.DISCUSSION...
A closed upper level low situated over the region is slowly making
eastward progress with the low center now seen over far east-
central Arizona. Shower activity has diminished everywhere except
for eastern Arizona where showers are likely to remain scattered
at times through this afternoon. Northerly breezy to locally
windy conditions across southeast California into far southwest
Arizona will continue for the rest of the morning, before slowly
diminishing this afternoon. Temperatures will recover a bit today
as the low center moves into New Mexico by this afternoon, but
highs will still only top out in the lower 70s in the Phoenix area
to the mid 70s across the western deserts.

Large scale troughing will remain in place over the Western U.S.
for the next several days with the next shortwave trough quickly
diving southward through the Pacific NW tonight, before reaching
our region on Thursday. The main forecast concern for this next
system will be strong winds Thursday afternoon and evening. Latest
guidance is indicating fairly widespread advisory level wind
potential with the strongest winds across southeast California and
just south of the Phoenix area. Wind gusts of 35-45 mph Thursday
afternoon into early evening are likely for many areas,
potentially leading to areas of blowing dust in the more dust
prone locations of Imperial County CA and Pinal County.

An inland trajectory of this late week system will keep moisture
levels fairly low, but there should be sufficient moisture for at
least scattered light showers starting Thursday evening across the
central and eastern Arizona high terrain. Precip chances mainly
over the high terrain are likely to continue through at least
Saturday morning as the trough (likely closed low) may stall out
over our region. Given the low moisture levels, latest forecast
QPF amounts are rather low with storm totals less than 0.25"
across much the high terrain and likely little if anything over
the south-central Arizona deserts. Snow levels are likely to drop
to 5500-6000 feet at times during the event, but accumulating
snows should mostly be relegated to the Mogollon Rim and the White
Mountains.

Temperatures will drop again behind a cold front moving through
late Thursday. Forecast highs Friday in the upper 60s to lower 70s
may recover closer to normals on Saturday if the low exits east,
but models differ in how quickly it ejects the low. Ensemble
members are roughly split 50/50 between keeping a closed low over
eastern Arizona through Saturday (maybe even Sunday) or ejecting
it into New Mexico. A faster ejection of the low would mean near
normal temperatures Saturday, but it if lingers over Arizona then
highs may stay in the lower 70s for the Phoenix area while
reaching near 80 in Yuma and El Centro. A similar high spread in
temperatures is seen for Sunday as slightly less than half of the
ensemble members keep the weakening closed low across eastern
Arizona. Confidence in forecast temperatures for this weekend is
quite low given the uncertainty in how long the low will stay over
our region.

After the closed low finally exits the region (most likely by
next Monday), modest high pressure and above normal temperatures
are likely to affect the region. Although the chances for reaching
90 degrees at some point Sunday into early next week have lowered
due to the potential closed low, guidance still shows upper 80s
as a decent possibility.

.AVIATION...Updated at 1752Z.

South-Central Arizona including KPHX, KIWA, KSDL, and KDVT:

Current light/variable winds to transition to mainly westerly over
the next hour or so as diurnal heating allows stronger westerly
winds aloft to mix down to the sfc. Some afternoon breeziness with a
few gusts into the teens will be possible before winds transition to
an easterly component shortly after midnight tonight. FEW-SCT decks aoa
6 kft are expected to decrease in coverage through the morning,
though there may be some increase in cloud cover this afternoon as
isolated to scattered showers develop over the higher terrain north
and east of Phoenix. Chances for any showers drifting into the metro
remain low (<10%). Elevated easterly winds late tonight/early Thu to
transition first to southerly during the late morning hours on Thu,
then to westerly on Thu afternoon. Westerly winds on Thu likely to
become rather strong and gusty by mid-late afternoon as a rather
robust Pacific weather system moves into the region. These strong
winds likely to produce areas of blowing dust as well, but
confidence is still too low at this point to include BLDU in any of
the Phx area TAF sites. A more likely concern will be slant-range
visibility reductions for aircraft on approach into the terminals.
BKN-OVC mid-level CIGS likely to return as well during the day on
Thu.

Southeast California/Southwest Arizona including KIPL and KBLH:

Winds at the terminals will favor a northwest component through the
afternoon/early evening hours with gusts reaching upwards of 25-30
kts at times. Winds will become westerly early this evening at
KIPL, while winds at KBLH are expected to become southerly late
tonight. Skies are expected to remain mostly clear with a few mid
and high clouds aoa 10 kft. Westerly winds at KIPL and southerly
winds at KBLH likely to become rather strong and gusty by mid-late
morning on Thu as a rather robust Pacific weather system moves into
the region. These strong winds likely to produce areas of blowing
dust as well, but confidence is still too low at this point to
include BLDU at either SE CA TAF sites. A more likely concern will
be slant-range visibility reductions for aircraft on approach into
the terminals. BKN-OVC mid-level CIGS likely to return as well
during the day on Thu.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Friday through Tuesday:
Much lighter winds are expected Friday. There will also be a
slight chance of showers over portions of south-central Arizona on
Friday. Expect a warming trend over the weekend with highs on the
lower deserts rising from the low to mid 70s on Friday to the
upper 80s by Monday. In general, a lighter wind regime is
anticipated during this time. Minimum RH values will be in the
15-25% range on Thursday, increase 5-10% Friday, then decline to
the 10-15% range by Sunday through Tuesday. Max RH values will
follow a similar trend going from 55-75% Friday morning down to
20-40% by Tuesday morning.
