Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Portland OR 145 PM
PDT Sun Jul 4 2021

.SYNOPSIS...Ou typical summer pattern will prevail though the next
week. Surface high pressure offshore and thermal low pressure inland
will maintain stable onshore flow for cloudy nighttime and morning
periods along the coast. An upper trough offshore will pull up
warmer temperatures by Tuesday, before passing overhead to increase
the marine layer depth and areas of fog and drizzle Tuesday night. A
much cooler Wednesday behind the trough before a warm up through the
reset of the week as an upper ridge over the Desert Southwest
strengthens and spreads west.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Tuesday tonight...Our weather is going
through a wash/rinse/repeat cycle each day and night as the weather
pattern stays generally static. Satellite shows the marine layer has
retreated out to sea this afternoon over all areas except near the
Columbia River entrance. Expect these clear skies to hold through
this evening, before clouds return inland overnight, similar to
their extent this morning.  Monday's morning stratus will erode and
retreat just about the same as today,  with a few high clouds
possible due to a passing shortwave up near Vancouver Island.
Temperatures will rise a degree or so warmer as the upper ridge over
the Desert Southwest expands further north. Monday night will return
to the clouds filling in the coasts and northern Willamette Valley.

On Tuesday, an upper low offshore of northern CA will lift northeast
towards the area. Warmer air drawn up from the south will spread
over the forecast area bringing our readings into the low 90s for
the inland low elevations and into to mid-60s to mid 70s for coastal
areas. Some hint of 850-700mb winds turning slightly east of south
from central OR into the Cascades, which may bring some towering
cumulus over the crest in Lane and Linn counties Tuesday afternoon
into the evening. However the surface thermal trough will remain
east of the Cascades keeping the forecast area in stable conditions
with the marine influence. As the upper trough moves overhead
Tuesday evening, the marine layer will deepen and areas of drizzle
will likely be found. -Kriederman

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Sunday...A deep marine layer with
areas of fog and drizzle will continue into Wednesday as the upper
trough lifts further north. Hard to say how fast the stratus will
burn off for the day, with the NAM showing its usual over saturation
of the airmass and the GFS drier.  Either way, lowered Wednesdays
max temperatures from the cooler post frontal airmass and expected
stratus to hang around at least into the early afternoon.
Temperatures will be 5 to 10 degrees cooler, closer to what early
July should have for readings. A shallower marine layer will be
expected Wednesday night into Thursday as higher pressure moves in
behind the departing trough. Thursday will return to a warming trend
and mostly clear skies with the building upper ridge.

Friday has become more uncertain as the GFS shows an upper ridge
extending overhead and the surface thermal ridge pushing further west
than previous runs, at this time to be over the crest of the
Cascades, but some hints of the southern end of the forecast area
perhaps seeing an even further west bulge. Whereas the EC shows a bit
more of a very weak trough moving over the area to keep the flow
aloft southwesterly. Both recent runs have had higher 500mb heights
than the previous, therefore have gone ahead and kept the warmer
temperature forecast for Friday to follow this trend, but will
continue to keep an eye on the flow development.

Models continue to strengthen and migrate the upper ridge westward
Saturday for continued dry and warmer than average temperatures for
early to mid July. However now both the GFS and EC are hinting at
some sort of trough dropping out of the either the Gulf of Alaska or
Yukon Territory to start pushing those 500mb heights down. Will
continue to watch this possible pattern change a week out evolve.

.AVIATION...18Z TAF UPDATE: Shortly after 2030Z visible satellite
imagery revealed IFR to low-end MVFR stratus inland had
dissipated. The coastal stratus retreated to the immediate
coastline, except for the south Washington and far north Oregon
coast. Coastal areas south of KTMK have improved to VFR and this
will continue into the evening. Coastal areas north of KTMK
likely to remain MVFR through 18Z Mon, with areas of high-end IFR
possible overnight. The KTTD-KDLS onshore gradient Mon morning
looks to be about the same as this morning. Thus, would expect
IFR to low-end MVFR stratus to push well into the coastal valleys
overnight and reach KKLS between 06Z and 09Z Mon and push up the
Columbia River to KTTD by 13Z.

KPDX AND APPROACHES...VFR SKC prevails through at least 12Z Mon.
Low-end MVFR stratus should reach the terminal between 12Z and
13Z, but dissipate by the end of the 18Z TAF period. Weishaar

.MARINE...Typical summer pattern to continue over the northeast
and east Pacific for the next few days. A thermally-induced
inverted surface trough will extend from northern California to
southwest Oregon. This will maintain the usual northwest to north
low-level wind pattern over the forecast area. Maximum wind
speeds occur during the afternoon through late evening, spreading
from the outer to the inner waters over the next couple of days.
Gusts up to 25 kt can be expected, especially south of Cascade
Head. Will issue a new small craft advisory for PZZ255 covering
late Mon afternoon through 07Z Tue. Wind speeds diminish Tue
night and Wed as the thermal trough weakens and gradients become
more westerly. Not anticipating small craft advisory wind
conditions during this period.

Seas are generally expected to remain in the 4 to 6 ft range with
a dominant fresh swell component. The primary longer-period
background swell will be in the 2 to 4 ft range. Choppy seas can
be expected at times, especially when the fresh swell becomes the
dominant component. Model guidance indicates wave heights remain
well below 10 ft through the week. Weishaar
