...PROLONGED WINTER WEATHER EVENT TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY...

.A series of Pacific storms will bring a mix of freezing rain,
sleet and snow to portions of northwest Oregon and southwest
Washington through the weekend.

The next storm will arrive tonight and bring a high potential for
significant freezing rain accumulations in the Coast Range,
Willapa Hills, the Central Willamette Valley and perhaps across
the southern Portland metro. There is also high potential of
significant snowfall for inland areas from the Cowlitz River
Valley to the Portland/Vancouver metro area, and areas to the
east through the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River Valley.

Updated aviation and marine

.SYNOPSIS...Another complex forecast as the series of storms
continues to push inland. Cold arctic air remains over the Columbia
Basin as a low pressure system moves southeastward into southeastern
Oregon. Mixed wintery precipitation persists throughout the forecast
area comprised of freezing rain, rain, and snow. Gusty conditions
through the Gorge. The second storm arrives tonight and is trending
stronger than the previous. Significant precipitation expected
overnight. Gradual warming with a few more mild systems expected next
week.

.SHORT TERM...Friday through Sunday...The first low pressure system
and associated fronts are moving inland through this afternoon
bringing mixed wintery precipitation to much of the area. Recent
satellite imagery is showing the low aloft moving southeastward over
southern Oregon and northern California this morning as it weakens.
This low ended up being a bit further south than models had
previously suggested which has had an impact on precipitation type
and spread. The northern portions of the forecast area are right on
track with snow throughout the eastern Portland-Vancouver metro area
and along the west hills...although slightly less in Portland
proper. Similar trend rings true for the Coast Range which are
seeing temperatures well below freezing with precipitation.
Likely experiencing some freezing rain along the north Oregon/south
Washington Coast Range and Willipa Hills. Conditions through the
Columbia River Gorge remain treacherous with blowing and heavy falling
snow. Winds are also very gusty with wind speeds at Corbet gusting to
near 60 mph. The Blizzard Warning will continue through the day today
where visibilities will be greatly reduced to near 1/4 mile or less at
times.

The one surprise overnight falls around the greater Salem area.
A precipitation band formed stretching northeastward from
Independence to Multnomah Falls, encompassing much of Marion,
western Washington, Clackamas and Multnomah Counties. With this more
impressive precipitation, freezing rain has fallen around Salem with
more ice accumulation than previously expected. Initial forecasts
kept Salem out of the heavier precipitation this morning but that
has not been the case. Spotter reports are showing anywhere from
0.10-0.20 inches of ice accumulation above 250 ft. Decided to
upgrade the Winter Weather Advisory for the central Willamette
Valley due to increased snow and ice accumulation. All other
Advisories and Warnings remain in play. Precipitation should slow in
the early afternoon as the low progresses further inland and erodes.
A slight lull in the weather this early afternoon as this storm
exits and the next advances towards the area tonight.

The next system is on-deck to arrive later this evening with the
potential to be much stronger than the one experienced on Thursday.
The low is more vertically stacked and models are in slightly better
agreement with the track targeting more of the Oregon/Washington
border near the mouth of the Columbia. The precipitation, similar to
this last storm, will likely start along the coast falling as rain.
With the cooler air already in place and with the continuation of
the easterly winds, likely will see more freezing rain at higher
elevations along the coast. Areas most susceptible are through the
Willipa Hills where ice accumulations could range between 0.25 to
near 0.50 inches. Slightly further south even through the north
Oregon Cascades near Jewell, more ice is possible with near 0.75
inches of ice accumulation from 4pm Friday for the next 24 hours.

Shifting eastward with this next system comes the snow. Now the
driver for whether the precipitation will be rain, freezing rain or
snow will be the influence of the cold easterly winds stemming from
the Columbia Basin...the closer to the Columbia River, generally the
colder it will be. In addition, based on the current low track, the
largest swath of moisture will be from Salem north into southern
Washington. Still expecting quite a bit of snow accumulation with 3
to 6 inches possible in the Portland-Vancouver metro (especially on
the east side), 1 to 4 inches through western Clackamas County and
up to 2 inches north of Corvallis. The Gorge will likely see up to 9
inches of new snow Friday night into Saturday. A strong east-west
pressure gradient through the Gorge will keep winds elevated with
gusts up to 50+ mph. Could see some blowing or drifting snow, with
reduced visibility during periods with the heaviest snow rates.
Cannot rule out some snow reaching south into the southern
Willamette Valley, but with the location of the low winds will be
slightly more southerly and will bring in warmer air. Thus, areas
south of Corvallis should stay mainly as rain with some isolated
pockets of freezing rain along higher terrain to the east. Speaking
of rain, the central Oregon coast will likely stay as rain over the
next several days, so no concerns there. Along the Cascades
expecting quite a bit of snow with the chance for up to a foot and a
half Friday night into Saturday. Highest snow amounts will likely be
along the north Oregon Cascades but the central Cascades are not out
of the woods. Could see a mix of freezing rain and snow along the
foothills from Salem north overnight below 2000 ft.

As has been the trend with both of these patterns, confidence is
moderate in regards to the snowfall accumulation and the freezing
rain locations/accumulation. Ensemble guidance is showing a a more
elongated spread of the low track in comparison to yesterday, which
could cause the low to fall anywhere from central Oregon north into
Central Washington. The driver for all of the precipitation and the
type is the low pressure track. If the low tracks to the north, could
see less precipitation in the central Willamette Valley or could be
more rain than wintery precipitation. The northern Willamette Valley
and southern Washington on the other hand would likely see higher
amounts of snowfall. If the low tracks further south into the central
or even southern portions of Oregon, precipitation could be hindered
in the north with More of it hitting the southern portions of the
forecast area. While not ideal to have this much uncertainty less
than 24-hours out, these types of systems are very challenging and
ever changing. No matter the outcome, expecting widespread wintery
precipitation which could create quite challenging travel conditions,
especially through the western Columbia River Gorge. Before hitting
the roads call 5-1-1 for the current road conditions and be sure to
stay prepared with a winter emergency kit.

Still cool through Sunday with more moisture headed towards the area.
However, not trending nearly as strong. Easterly winds will still be
at play on Sunday so could still experience some wintery mixed
precipitation. However, trending more mild on Sunday so that could
limit the spread of that winter weather.    -Muessle

.LONG TERM...Monday through Thursday...Conditions will begin to
warm as easterly winds die off and the fronts all progress inland.
Will see gradual warming through early next week. Precipitation will
slow through the day on Monday, becoming showery through the middle
of the week. But, will be back to mild conditions, as any snow will
be relegated to the higher terrain of the Cascades. The long term
forecast still has quite a bit of uncertainty, especially with how
these last storms have manifested. Decided to stick with long-range
guidance pretty closely as the short-term forecast has been the
attention need for this week.	-Muessle

.AVIATION...12Z TAF issuance: Current band of precipitation,
which has brought a little of every winter precip type, has
started to dissipate as of 12Z. Do not expect this to last long
as satellite indicates the next batch is about to arrive. Cigs
have remained somewhat elevated and mainly VFR under areas
exposed to the strong Gorge outflow winds. Elsewhere, am
expecting the mix of MVFR to LIFR to continue. Still expect
mainly light snow to prevail during the next several hours for a
line north of roughly Longview, Scapoose, Portland, to Mt.
Jefferson. A freezing rain/sleet mode will occur south of that
line to roughly Tillamook, Corvallis, and then east. This
includes Hillsboro, Aurora, and Salem. Salem and portions of the
west Willamette Valley have picked up significant freezing rain
accumulations already tonight far exceeding expectations and
thus expect runways will have significant traction issues for
much of the day. Remaining areas yet further south, including
Eugene and Newport, will mostly likely stay liquid rain. Cannot
rule out periods of freezing rain for Eugene.

Precipitation will gradually taper off this afternoon and early
evening and do expect ceilings to improve at that time as well.
The break will be short lived, however. Another upper low will
approach the region overnight. This low is expected to bring much
higher precipitatiion rates, especially after 06Z with several
inches of snow likely for the Portland Metro terminals and up to
another quarter inch of freezing rain accumulations for the
central Willamette Valley. Much of the coast and south Willamette
valley are expected to remain liquid rain. Expect ceilings to
drop again nearly everywhere with MVFR at KPDX and KTTD and IFR
elsewhere. East wind gusts coming out of the Gorge could push 40
kt at KTTD, 30-35 kts at KPDX and around 25 kt at KAST.

KPDX AND APPROACHES...Currently VFR but do expect the next batch
of light snow to arrive near 14Z, or so. Should see cigs drop
back to 020-030 where they will likely remain most of the next 24
hours. Currently expect to see 2-4 inches of steady light snow
accumulation and that's assuming gusty east winds stop blowing it
away. Beginning 06-08Z, a heavier batch of snow will arrive. East
winds will likely keep cigs somewhat elevated, but this round of
snow should fall at a much higher rate and will be more of a
heavier, "wet" snow with around 4 inches of accumulation possible
ending 12Z and another 2-3 inches after that on Saturday. /JBonk

.MARINE...Multiple lows and/or fronts will cross the waters
through Tuesday. Currently a surface low has stalled and is
slowly weakening just off the central Oregon coast. Another low
approaches the waters Friday night, then moving inland somewhere
between the Columbia River mouth and Grays Harbor. Have favored
a more northerly track for this low on this forecast package
which resulted in keeping wind gusts just below gales. Available
modeled wave data only supports the further south track so had
to lower seas a little bit to account for this slightly weaker
solution. Regardless, do expect a westerly swell to arrive on
Saturday to bring seas into the lower/mid teens.

A cold front then swings across the waters Sunday night with
marginal gale gusts and also keeping seas elevated into the
Teens. Another surface low then crosses Vancouver Island Monday
night with at least high end SCA gusts and possible gales. This
fetch of winds stand to bring seas into the upper teens on
Tuesday if the current trends continue. /JBonk
