.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure will build across the Middle Atlantic region
tonight. Low pressure strengthens across the lower Ohio Valley and
will track across Maryland and Delaware Thursday and Thursday night
before moving into the North Atlantic early Friday. High pressure
will then build over the area this weekend and last into next
week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
Summary...Widespread rainfall Thursday and Thursday night, which
changes to some snow across portions of northeast PA and northwest
NJ late Thursday night. Gusty winds later Thursday night.
Synoptic Overview...A weakening upper-level ridge continues to
slide across our region this evening as a closed low moves
across the southern Plains and into the Tennessee Valley
overnight. The closed low continues to track eastward through
Thursday night, however it is forecast to open up as a strong
trough slides across the Northeast and links up with it. At the
surface, low pressure tracks from the Tennessee Valley Thursday
to off the Mid-Atlantic coast later Thursday night. Meanwhile,
strong high pressure will be building across the Great Lakes and
adjacent Canada Thursday night. The storm system will bring our
first widespread precipitation event in a few weeks.
Tonight..A mostly cloudy night is expected over our area as a
shallow moist layer remains trapped beneath a low-lvl inversion.
As the flow aloft turns more from the southwest and south, low-
level warm air advection is forecast to increase. This
increasing warm air advection will be driven by an increasing
southwesterly low- level jet, which will also advect deeper
moisture into our area with time. The precipitable water values
are forecast to increase to near 1-inch across much of our
region by daybreak. This all will translate to increasing
forcing for ascent late overnight, with light rain starting to
overspread western portions of our region closer to daybreak.
It is possible that prior to the steadier rain arriving, some
drizzle/fog may occur due to lowering cloud bases and lingering
drier air above an inversion and little to no lift.
Temperatures will largely flatline overnight given the expected
cloud cover, warm air advection aloft, and slowly rising dew
points.
For Thursday...As the closed low moves across the Tennessee Valley
during the day, surface low pressure will start to arrive into the
Mid-Atlantic region. Forcing for ascent will become maximized in the
afternoon with the passage of a low-level jet and strongest warm air
advection. In addition, the model guidance shows quite the
convergence axis coming in from the northwest toward later in the
afternoon. This is seen well at 850 MB and 925 MB which leads to a
zone of robust frontogenesis. This should result in times of heavier
rainfall especially north and west of the fall line. Along and south
of a line from about Wilmington to Atlantic City, the rain may tend
to become more showery later in the afternoon as the main forcing
becomes focused farther north and some instability also starts to
work in. The point forecast soundings across our Delmarva zones into
southern New Jersey shows a low-level inversion remaining in place,
but a decent amount of elevated instability develops toward later in
the afternoon. It is possible that a few thunderstorms occur here
and given the continued signal in the guidance, added in a mention.
If the boundary layer warms more than forecast, some surface-based
instability could be realized however given the forecast track of
the surface low the latest thinking is the low-level inversion holds.
Otherwise, a zone of precipitable water values of 1.00-1.25 inches
moves across nearly our entire area during the day Thursday. This
will result in times of heavier rainfall. At the surface, an onshore
wind will be occurring with some increase as we go through the day.
This will tend to keep temperatures on the cooler side, especially
north and west of the fall line. Some of the warm sector should get
into portions of our southern zones with temperatures rising into
the 50s with even some lower 60s possible in southern Delaware.
For Thursday night...The aforementioned closed low is forecast to
open up as it arrives into the East, while a sharp trough slides
across the Northeast. These features should merge helping to support
surface low pressure off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Plenty of forcing
for ascent moves across our area especially in the evening hours,
with a zone of frontogenesis sliding across the western and northern
zones especially. This will result in continued rain, heavier at
times, then the rain will start to lessen from northwest to
southeast during the overnight. Prior to this however, colder air
working in from the northwest associated with strong Canadian high
pressure should result in a changeover to some snow late in the
overnight across parts of our northwestern zones. The timing of this
is less certain given that the colder air will be chasing the back
edge of the precipitation shield. Some accumulating snow however is
anticipated across portions of northeast Pennsylvania into
northwestern New Jersey. Elevation should play a role, however if
the changeover to snow occurs before the strongest forcing exits
then there could be a few hours of higher snowfall rates resulting
in more efficient accumulations.
A few thunderstorms may occur across the southern zones Thursday
evening in associated with the passage of surface low and injection
of the warm sector. As mentioned above, a low-level inversion is
anticipated to hold, however the forecast soundings show a strongly
sheared low-level profile and therefore will need to watch for any
surface-based convection. As of now, the severe thunderstorm risk
looks rather low.
A northeast to north wind is expected to increase quite a bit as we
go through Thursday night. The pressure gradient tightens quite a
bit between low pressure off the coast and strong high pressure to
our northwest. The forecast soundings do show decent momentum
transfer to the surface, however overall an inversion is anticipated
to keep the stronger winds from reaching the ground. Overall, winds
increase into the 15-25 mph range overnight with gusts 30-35 mph.
Some gusts to 40 mph are probable along the coast closer to
daybreak. Given the inversion in place, the thinking is the winds
remain below advisory criteria.
Total rainfall amounts with this system through Thursday night are
forecast to be 1.0-1.75 inches. Our region should be able to handle
this due to the lengthy stretch of dry conditions, however if
heavier rainfall rates are realized at times then some street and/or
poor drainage flooding cannot be ruled out. Given the dry conditions
leading up to this, no Flood/Flash Flood Watch will be issued at
this time.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY/...
Friday will feature a transition from the stormy events of the
near term back to more tranquil conditions. The precipitation will
be exiting the area Friday morning and with colder air arriving,
it could end as some snow across eastern PA and northern NJ. Rather
deep low pressure and its associated front will be offshore while
high pressure begins to build in from the Great Lakes. A colder
and drier air mass will be arriving thru the day on a gusty north
wind. Sustained winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph are
expected. Right now, it appears that the gusts should remain below
Wind advisory conditions, but we'll take another look tomorrow in
case that later guidance shows otherwise. Temperatures won't rise
much during the day with the sunshine arriving but decent cold
air advection continuing into the afternoon. We will probably get
to the upper 30s and low 40s for most areas. Wind chills will likely
be some 10 degrees cooler than the air temps however.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
After Friday, the weather in the long term becomes rather uneventful
for the most part. A weak upper trough will linger across the East
coast with a slow moving surface low well off the Southeast coast.
This low will bring some clouds and precip towards the Delmarva and
ern NJ areas Monday and into Monday night. The pops in the new fcst
are a bit higher than the previous fcst, but still only in the
slight chc range for now. An upper ridge an surface high will spend
much of the time across the northern Middle Atlantic region, so a
dry period is expected. Temperatures for the period will start off
cool (Saturday) with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s in most
areas. After that, readings will moderate back to above normal for
Sunday and the trend towards even warmer readings will continue into
the middle of next week. We have some high temperatures in the low
60s in the grids for next Tue/Wed. I wouldn't be surprised if these
numbers were increased over the next few days.

A prolonged period of onshore flow will continue through the next
couple days with wind speeds strengthening Thursday night into
Friday. Winds will shift more northerly by Friday afternoon, but
earlier built-up water may take time to drain out particularly over
the backbays and potentially the southern coast of the DE Bay.
Consequently minor tidal flooding will be possible for both high
tide cycles on Friday with the most likely areas to see
advisory-lvl flooding being the Delaware coast, and Barnegat
Bay.
The flooding potential will likely be capped at minor due to the low
astronomical tides, as we will be near the quarter-moon.
