in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
* WHERE...Tidal areas in the counties of Middlesex, Monmouth,
Ocean and southeastern Burlington.
* WHEN...From 9:00 AM Saturday until 3:00 PM Sunday.
* IMPACTS...At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable
roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along inland

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will remain in place over the area today. A backdoor
cold front will move through tonight as a stronger area of high
pressure builds southward out of Quebec. Our region will then be in
between the strong high pressure to the north and a coastal low to
our south over the weekend. The coastal low will start to shift out
to sea on Monday, with high pressure likely building into the mid-
Atlantic by the early to middle portion of next week.
&&
.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
There were scattered clouds and a light and variable wind overnight.
As a result, some fog developed in our region. The fog was fairly
widespread in eastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey, and
somewhat patchy in nature in southern New Jersey, Delaware and
northeastern Maryland. That should continue to be the case early
this morning, with the fog lifting and dissipating mainly in the 8
to 10 o'clock time frame.
High pressure is expected to continue influencing our weather today.
We are anticipating mainly scattered clouds, although the sky should
become mostly cloudy at times in parts of eastern Pennsylvania and
northwestern New Jersey. The wind will remain light and variable
with high temperatures favoring the 70s.
A back door cold front is forecast to push into our region from the
northeast tonight. An increasing east to northeast wind is expected
in its wake, along with an increase in cloud cover. There is the
potential for isolated showers and patchy drizzle late tonight,
expanding into our region from the northeast. Low temperatures
should range from the middle 50s to the lower 60s.

.SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/...
It is not shaping up to be the nicest of weekends in the local area.
Not much has changed regarding the synoptic pattern. We will spend
the weekend sandwiched between strong high pressure to our north and
a coastal low to our south. By Saturday morning, a backdoor cold
front will have cleared the region, forced southward by the building
high to the north. Behind the front, steady onshore flow will
develop, with marine stratus likely overspreading the area.
Meanwhile, weak low pressure has already formed off the Southeast
coast, and will slowly gather organization over the next 36 hours
as it meanders to our south.
Model guidance has trended towards what the GFS has been advertising
with this system, with tonight's EC run essentially moving all the
way in line with what has been the GFS solution. This means the
center of the surface low and its associated heavy precipitation
should stay pretty well south of us. This will spare us from a heavy
rain event and any hydro or wind concerns. However, we will still
have a vertically deep layer of onshore flow, and there will also be
a long fetch of easterly flow over the waters which will help push a
lot of moisture from over the ocean onshore. This will result in an
extended period of mostly cloudy to overcast conditions. With the
coastal low staying further south, there will not be much forcing to
"wring out" the moisture, preventing much in the way of steady rain.
Instead, scattered showers and drizzle will probably be more
favored, especially on Saturday. By Saturday night and Sunday, some
steadier but still mainly light rain will become more likely,
especially in southern and eastern portions of the area, as the
coastal low moves a little closer. Overall, grey and gloomy will
probably be the best way to describe most of the weekend.
Despite the clouds, showers, and onshore flow, the air mass in place
as well as the ocean waters remain quite warm, so high temperatures
both Saturday and Sunday will still run slightly above normal, in
the upper 60s and lower 70s. In addition, the pattern will support a
smaller than normal diurnal range, with overnight lows running far
above normal. Regarding the winds, with the center of the coastal
low staying further south, there are no significant wind concerns.
However, near the immediate coast, some easterly gusts of around 30
mph are still possible from Saturday afternoon through Sunday before
the gradient starts to relax.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Overview...
Little change to the overall thinking in the long term as a high
amplitude pattern of Western US troughing and Eastern US ridging
develops. Those looking for a return to cool and crisp autumn
conditions will have to continue waiting, as this is a surefire warm
pattern for our area. One recent change is that it does look like
the onshore flow regime from over the weekend could continue well
into Monday, which would lead to another day with a lot of cloud
cover. Beyond then, while some minor day-to-day variation is likely,
the overriding theme will be mainly dry conditions and temperatures
running solidly above seasonal averages as ridging dominates the
pattern. In fact, for the entire forecast period, there are no
locations in the entire CWA forecast to drop below 50 degrees
through the end of next week, not even the Poconos. A rather unusual
stretch of temperatures as we approach mid-October.
Dailies...
Monday-Monday night... Recent trends have been slower with the
departure of the coastal low from over the weekend. While Monday
still looks mainly dry, it now appears likely that we will remain in
a northeasterly flow regime for at least one more day. This will
probably keep a good deal of clouds around, and possibly a scattered
shower. If things are progressive enough, we could still see some
improvement and more sunshine by afternoon, but this is starting to
look less likely. Temperatures will remain above normal, in the low
to mid 70s, but they will depend somewhat on the extent of cloud
cover. Overnight lows should again be quite warm in the upper 50s
and low 60s with mainly dry conditions.
Tuesday-Thursday... Mainly dry weather and above normal temperatures
should prevail for this stretch. If the slower solutions with the

.MARINE...
High pressure will continue to influence the coastal waters of New
Jersey and Delaware today, with a cold front pushing down from the
northeast tonight. The wind should settle into an easterly direction
at 5 to 10 knots today, with the wind becoming east to northeast
tonight and increasing to 15 to 20 knots.
Waves on our ocean waters should be 2 to 3 feet today, building to 3
to 4 feet tonight.
Outlook...
Saturday-Monday... On the Atlantic coastal waters, marine headlines
are likely throughout this period, likely in the form of a prolonged
SCA. East-northeast winds of 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 30 kt are
expected Saturday and Sunday, decreasing for Sunday night and
Monday. Seas of 5 to 7 ft are expected, greatest on Saturday night
and Sunday but remaining above advisory levels into Monday. For now,
have issued an SCA for the weekend period, Saturday morning through
Sunday night, but this will likely need to be extended through
Monday. On Delaware Bay, the period of SCA conditions should be
confined from about Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening,
and Upper Delaware Bay may barely reach criteria at all. With
the later onset timing and more marginal conditions there, have
held off on an SCA for the Bay for now.
Tuesday... Conditions should subside to sub-SCA levels over all the
waters as winds and seas continue to decrease.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
The astronomical high tides associated with the new moon will remain
elevated into this weekend, especially the high tide that occurs
along the oceanfront during the morning.
A subtle onshore flow may cause spotty minor flooding through
the end of the work week.
A strengthening onshore flow will develop this weekend, resulting in
the potential for coastal flooding. Presently, it appears as though
widespread minor flooding will occur with the high tides late on
Saturday morning and again late on Sunday morning. There is the
possibility of localized moderate flooding, as well, especially with
the Saturday morning high tide along the ocean.
The areas of concern are the coastal counties of New Jersey and
Delaware, areas along Delaware Bay, and the tidal Delaware River and
its tributaries.
The threat of tidal flooding from this event is rather limited
for the upper eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay.
