.SYNOPSIS...
Bermuda high pressure remains over the western Atlantic through
midweek, weakening and shifting southward by Thursday. A cold front
will move through the region late Wednesday into Thursday, stalling
to our south. A couple of areas of low pressure develop along the
boundary on Friday and Saturday, staying to our south as they track
to the east over the weekend. Another cold front may cross the
region later Sunday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
615 am update: Patchy fog has developed in the usual susceptible
spots around sunrise. Effects look quite localized and should be
rather brief, so will not need to issue a special weather
statement at this time. Forecast is otherwise in good shape.
The large-scale upper pattern early this morning featured a broad
upper low centered near the Ozarks with a strong vort max to its
north in Manitoba/Ontario. High-amplitude ridging continued along
the East Coast and in the western Atlantic. The vort max will
continue riding the ridge today, leaving the upper low largely
behind; however, it will allow the low to lift slowly northeastward,
resulting in a gradual shift eastward of the ridge axis plaguing the
eastern U.S. for the past few days.
The bad news, though, is that convection associated with the upper
low will continue supplying considerable latent heat to the
downstream ridge, amplifying it further today (aided by the eastward-
moving vort max in Canada). This should result in another hot day
across the area. It will also be noticeably more humid, as low-level
south/southwest flow will continue advecting higher moisture-content
air into the region. Low-amplitude, convectively-generated
perturbations will be ejecting northeastward from the upper low,
likely generating scattered convection in much of the Ohio
Valley/Appalachians today. Some of this convection may move into or
develop in the higher terrain of our CWA this afternoon.
Additionally, weak larger-scale lift associated with these
perturbations should result in a slow increase in upper cloudiness
(spreading from the convection upstream). A combination of these
factors may inhibit warming somewhat today, particularly northwest
of the Fall Line. However, my suspicion is that the proximity of the
ridge axis to our area will win out, and temperatures will be
similar to yesterday for most. With higher humidity (even with
diurnal mixing lowering dew points somewhat during the afternoon),
suspect heat indices for most will be a couple degrees higher than
those observed yesterday. The heat advisory for the Philadelphia
metropolitan area looks good and made no changes to it. Did consider
an expansion northeastward into Somerset/Middlesex Counties, where
heat indices near 100 may occur this afternoon. However, was not
confident enough to do so on this shift.
Regarding PoPs today, they are highest north of I-80 and in the far
western CWA, where orographic effects will be strongest.
Additionally, these areas will be displaced farther from the
stronger subsidence attendant to the ridge. Generally, though, think
slight-chance to chance PoPs are warranted, with nothing mentionable
roughly southeast of the I-95 corridor. Notably, convection-allowing
models are pretty sparse with convection today in our area. The main
threat from any storms that do form is brief/torrential downpours,
as weak flow and high-PW air will combine for slow-moving storms
highly efficient at producing precipitation.
Convection will wane quickly near/after sunset tonight, with the
main sensible-weather concern being patchy fog. This potential will
likely be strongly tied to coverage of precipitation today, and this
wild card precludes inclusion of fog in the forecast at this point.
Will refine this portion of the forecast once the convective
evolution today becomes clearer. Forecast lows are in the 70s (mid-
to-upper 60s in the Poconos and at the beaches).

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT/...
As the vort max in Canada races to the Maritime Provinces, a
kicker/strong shortwave trough will dig southeastward into Quebec.
The upper low in the central U.S. will move little as an upstream
ridge in central Canada becomes established (promoting more
blocking). However, the ridge in the western Atlantic will
noticeably flatten as the trough in eastern Canada deepens. This
should provide a more favorable environment for convection in the
Northeast/Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday.
However, one concern is the lack of an apparent synoptic-scale
feature producing more formidable large-scale lift. This suggests
convection will be transient and disorganized. With continued weak
flow aloft, slow-moving convective cores producing locally heavy
rainfall should be the primary characteristic of the storms that
develop. Coverage is almost certain to be more widespread versus
Monday given the weakening ridge and the increased proximity to any
perturbations ejecting downstream from the central U.S. upper low.
Model soundings do exhibit some potential for microbursts, but one
concern is the residual warm air atop the boundary layer from the
lingering ridge offshore. Overall feel the severe potential is
pretty low, with pulse-like storms the main threat.
It will continue to be hot and humid in the environment upstream
from the flattening ridge. However, with cloud cover and convective
coverage expected to be higher, temperatures should be somewhat
lower than those expected for today. As such, no extension of the
heat advisory was made on this shift, though this is not out of the
question in future forecasts. Expect convection to wane during the
evening/overnight hours, with another muggy night to follow. Fog may
be a little more prevalent Tuesday night, though confidence on
coverage/density is quite low and dependent on the evolution of
convection during the day. Lows Tuesday night should be in the upper
60s to mid 70s.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
The period starts off with hot and humid conditions but will
transition to more seasonable, but unsettled, June weather as we
head towards the end of the week and through the weekend.
Wednesday still looks to be the last of the hot days in the current
heat wave as we starts to see the ridge that has been keep us hot
and humid break down. Highs on Wednesday will reach into the lower
90s and with dew points still in the upper 60s, the stickiness
factor will remain. A surface low will dig down over eastern Canada
and will drag a cold front towards our area on Wednesday. The low
remains to our north but will drag a cold front into the region late
Wednesday into Thursday. A pre-frontal surface trough across the
region ahead of the boundary, along with several waves of ,id level
energy, will help serve as a focus for convective initiation
Wednesday afternoon with continued chances as the front approaches
and moves into the area. The front pushes through the region
Wednesday night, slowing down on Thursday and eventually stalling
just south of our forecast area by early Friday. The front may push
back northward as a warm front on Friday but with the potential for
several waves of low pressure developing along the stalled boundary,
it may stay suppressed to our south, with the lows moving off to the
east through Saturday. The mid level flow is ripe with energy moving
across the Mid-Atlantic which will keep the chance for showers
through the week, though with more of a marine layer influence,
thunder chances may diminish until later in the weekend.
Cooler and somewhat drier air pushes in for Thursday as we finally
get away from the prolonged southwest flow of the past several days.
The flow turns more to the east through Thursday and remains
easterly through the end of the week. Highs on Thursday will still
be warm as the airmass starts to modify (highs in the low to mid
80s, cooler along the immediate coast) but Friday and into the
weekend should feature highs in the 70s to near 80 for much of the
region. Additionally, the dew points will drop off and become much
more tolerable during this time. With the easterly flow in place, it
is more likely we will see increased cloud cover across the region,
as well.
A low pressure system crosses the Great Lakes region, remaining well
to the north of our area as it moves to the east. The attendant cold
front will approach our area on Sunday with the front likely not
crossing the area until later Sunday. There is the potential for
showers and thunderstorms ahead of and along the boundary as it
cross the region. Temperatures rebound a little as we head into
Sunday with a return to southwest flow ahead of the cold front.

.AVIATION /10Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.
Today...Lingering patchy fog early this morning at the more
susceptible terminals (TTN/ILG/MIV/ACY); otherwise, mainly VFR.
There is a chance for isolated/scattered showers/storms, but
this threat is mostly to the north of the terminals (possibly at
RDG/ABE). Should any storms occur at the terminals, brief
restrictions should be expected. Southwest winds up to 10 kt.
Another round of sea/bay breezes is likely during the afternoon,
with quick switch to a steadier/stronger south to southeast
wind at ILG/MIV/ACY (starting between 16z and 20z). Moderate
confidence.
Tonight...Mainly VFR. Patchy fog possible, especially if coverage of
storms during the day is higher than anticipated. Winds generally
light and variable. Moderate confidence.
Outlook...
Tuesday through Tuesday night...Increased coverage of showers/storms
expected by Tuesday afternoon, with highest chances north/west of
PHL. Restrictions are likely in the presence of storms.
Additionally, may see some restrictions Tuesday night with fog,
especially in areas where heavier rainfall occurs during the day.
Winds generally southwest up to 10 kt during the day, becoming more
light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence.
Wednesday...Mainly VFR conditions expected. Showers and
thunderstorms, mainly during the afternoon and evening, with MVFR or
lower conditions likely. Light west to northwest winds with a
sea/bay breeze possible at KACY. Moderate confidence.
Thursday...Mainly VFR with MVFR ceilings possible, especially south
and east of KPHL. Showers and thunderstorms with MVFR or lower
conditions possible. Northeast winds around 10 knots or less
becoming southeast through the day. Low confidence.
Friday...MVFR or lower conditions expected. Showers and
thunderstorms possible. Easterly winds around 5 to 10 knots. Low
confidence.

.MARINE...
Sub-advisory winds/seas are expected to continue through Tuesday
night.
There are two primary concerns during this period. The first is fog
potential, as high dew points will continue to advect over the
relatively cool ocean waters the next couple of days. Satellite
imagery indicates that lower clouds and some fog have developed
offshore. It remains unclear how dense this fog will become, but
webcams early this morning indicate little in the way of visibility
restrictions near the coast. As a result, have hesitated to include
mention of fog in the marine zones through Tuesday night. However,
the potential certainly exists.
The second concern is potential for convection each afternoon. Think
chances are fairly low today, but chances are higher on Tuesday.
Gusty/erratic winds should be expected near any storms.
Outlook...
Wednesday through Friday...Sub-Small Craft Advisory conditions
expected through the period. Seas may start to build on Friday,
possibly nearing 5 feet on the eastern edges of the marine zones.
