.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure remains centered offshore just southeast of the
region. A cold front will begin to approach from the north on Friday
and slowly work its way through the region over the weekend, before
returning north as a warm front early next week. Another cold front
may approach by Tuesday as low pressure tracks well to our
northwest. Moisture associated with Tropical Depression Nine may
also impact the region by later next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Increased PoPs for this afternoon based on the expansive cumulus
field and slightly earlier timing in convective initiation.
Still appears that synoptic scale lift is limited, so do not
expect widespread coverage, but scattered storms are expected to
continue through early this evening. With weak steering flow
and deep-layer shear, storms should be disorganized and short-
lived but may also be rather potent given the sufficiently dry
midlevels (though not terribly dry; PWs still generally 1.6-1.8
inches). The primary hazards will be downbursts/gusty winds and
localized heavy rain.

Any convection should diminish quickly with the loss of daytime
heating, with another warm/humid night with patchy fog to
follow.

By Friday afternoon, a more pronounced mid level shortwave
trough will approach from the west. It will likely stay well
west of our region through the day, so coverage may be limited
during the day time hours. As with today, shear will be limited,
but there will remain a heavy rain and downburst potential.

Heat and humidity will continue into tomorrow. Temperature and
dew points should be similar to today, so not planning any
changes to the heat advisory at this time.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
An active period of weather is likely Friday night into Saturday. At
the surface, a weak and slow moving frontal boundary will continue
to sag southward through the region. Aloft, at least one
convectively enhanced shortwave disturbance appears likely to track
along the front during Friday night. Weakly forced convection will
already be ongoing Friday afternoon, but the approach of the
shortwave will bring better forcing during the overnight hours. This
could cause convection to continue, and potentially even increase in
coverage, well into the overnight. From there, it will really be a
matter of mesoscale and smaller processes which will determine how
the threat evolves into the day on Saturday. But with the front
remaining nearby and a high likelihood for remnant outflow
boundaries in the area, additional rounds of showers and storms
appear probable, with the focus tending to shift more southward with
time. By Saturday night, the surface front will shift south of us,
forcing will diminish, and the atmosphere will likely be quite
overturned. So we should trend towards dry weather

Overall, this is a concerning setup from a hydro perspective. In
terms of moisture, PWAT values will be at or above 2 inches
throughout this period, a long time for values to be that high. Dew
points will be in the low to even mid 70s. The wind profiles are
also worth mentioning, with weak and largely boundary-parallel shear
vectors favoring both slow moving and training storms. Corfidi
upshear vectors are very slow (5 to 10 kt) and even the downshear
vectors are quite slow (10 to 15 kt) over most of the area for this
period. And needless to say, despite us having a couple days to dry
out so far this week, we have had plenty of rain this month and
flash flood guidance remains very low overall.

Having said all that, it seems likely that at least localized, if
not fairly widespread, flash flooding will occur during this period.
Have gone ahead and issued a Flash Flood Watch for much of the area.
Have left off both the far northern zones, where the signal for high
QPF is weaker, and the far southern zones, where FFG is much higher.
But much of the area will be at risk for flash flooding to start the
weekend. The Watch is fairly long in duration, and will run from
Friday afternoon through late Saturday night.

Otherwise, with the approach of the front and the widespread
convection, we will at least break the heat on Saturday with highs
mostly in the low to mid 80s, though with tropical levels of
humidity. The overnight periods will be unseasonably warm and stuffy
given the abundance of moisture in the air mass.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Overview...

Unsettled conditions appear likely to continue well into next week.
In the mid-levels, Northeast US ridging will steadily break down as
a robust shortwave trough digs into southern Ontario. Strengthening
surface low pressure will track far northwest of the region early
next week, sending a cold front slowly in our direction. Meanwhile,
the weak frontal boundary from over the weekend will also likely
remain in the area into early next week, though there is some
indication now that it may remain mostly to our south. Finally, a
good deal of model guidance is now suggesting that moisture
associated with TD 9 could affect the area by mid to late next week
as it potentially begins to interact with the frontal system. With
all of this going on, most days for the foreseeable future will
continue to see at least a chance of showers and thunderstorms
in portions of the region. Coverage and intensity will vary day
by day, and confidence in daily details is not especially high.
It continues to look like hydro concerns will outweigh severe as
shear remains weak and PWATs remain anomalously high.

Dailies...

Sunday-Sunday night... Latest trends for Sunday are a bit more
optimistic, as most guidance now suggests the first cold front
staying to the south of the region rather than lifting back north.
This is due to high pressure over New England pushing further south
than previously expected. With that front being so weak, it will
still be fairly warm and humid over the region, so cannot rule out
some weakly forced showers and storms. But PoPs are quite low now
for Sunday, only in the slgt chc to low end chc range, and suspect
it will be a mainly dry day overall, with mostly quiet weather
for the overnight as well.

Monday-Tuesday... For the start of the new work week, we will be
watching the approach of the next cold front moving in from the
west. This front will likely bring a chance of showers and storms to
the region, especially western areas, by Monday. Like many fronts
we've seen this warm season, this front also appears likely to slow
down on approach and remain near the area into Tuesday. By then, the
focus for convection should shift southward and coverage will more
likely be less than on Monday. With the parent low for this front
and its better shear/forcing tracking so far northwest of us, severe
weather looks unlikely, but we may have to monitor for hydro
concerns as the air mass remains warm and humid.

Wednesday-Thursday... Towards mid next week, attention may turn to
what remains of Tropical Depression Nine. Models are in fairly good
agreement on taking it into the northern Gulf Coast as a hurricane,
reflected in the NHC forecast. From there, it seems likely to curve
northeastward, and may begin interacting with the frontal system
discussed for Monday and Tuesday. Should these features interact
favorably, a heavy rain event would be possible, as some model
guidance suggests. Not surprisingly, however, high uncertainty
remains given the time range, and this will just be something to
watch over the next several days.

.AVIATION /20Z THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG,
KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

This afternoon...Prevailing VFR conditions likely, but MVFR
conditions will be possible in the vicinity of any showers and
thunderstorms that develop. Expanded the mention of -TSRA with
the 18Z TAFs based on current satellite and radar trends, but it
still appears that the primary period will be through 23Z.
Winds southwest around 5 kt, with sea/bay breeze influence
likely at ILG/ACY and possible at MIV. Moderate confidence on
the overall pattern, but low confidence on the exact timing of
any tsra impacts at TAF sites.

Tonight...Starting VFR, but fog is likely after 06Z. At this
point, have only included MVFR visibility restrictions in the
TAFs, but would not be surprised to see localized IFR conditions.
Winds light and variable. Moderate confidence on the overall
pattern but low confidence on the extent and how dense the fog
will be.

Friday...Once the morning fog dissipates, should have VFR
conditions for most of the day time hours. Showers and
thunderstorms may begin to move into the area after 18Z, but
uncertain if any TAF site will see impacts before 00Z. Winds
light and variable but should generally be favoring the
southerly direction. Moderate confidence on the overall
pattern, but low confidence on timing details.

Outlook...

Friday night-Saturday night... Periodic restrictions to sub-VFR
conditions are likely. Numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely
to be in the area for much of this period. In addition, during the
overnight hours, areas not experiencing rain may also deal with fog.
Winds light and variable Friday night, then favoring an easterly or
northeasterly direction at 5 to 10 kt Saturday and Saturday night.
Erratic winds are likely at times especially near areas of tstms.
Moderate confidence.

Sunday-Sunday night... Prevailing VFR. Some lingering fog possible
Sunday morning. A shower or tstm is possible but with generally less
areal coverage than prior days. Winds shifting from northeast to
southeast at 5 to 10 kt, eventually becoming light and variable
overnight. Moderate confidence.

Monday-Monday night... Prevailing VFR. Scattered afternoon and
evening showers and tstms possible. Winds becoming southwest at 5 to
10 kt, then light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence.

Tuesday-Tuesday night... Prevailing VFR. Scattered afternoon and
evening showers and tstms possible. Winds becoming northwest at 5 to
10 kt, then light and variable overnight. Moderate confidence.

Winds and seas should stay below Small Craft Advisory criteria
through Friday. Wind direction prevailing out of the southwest
