Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ 830 PM EDT Fri Aug 13 2021 .SYNOPSIS... A cold front approaches overnight and slowly works its way through the region on Saturday. The front will stall over the Mid-Atlantic into the start of the new week as high pressure builds into the region from the north. By the middle of next week, that front lifts back north as a warm front as the remnants of what is currently Tropical Depression Fred potentially lifts along the Appalachians. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY/... The heat related headlines have expired. Also, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch that was in effect for our counties in eastern Maryland have come to an end. The convection in eastern Maryland and Delaware will continue to weaken this evening with the loss of daytime heating. After the last of the showers and thunderstorms dissipate, no additional precipitation is expected in those areas overnight. The same is true for much of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Most of the showers and thunderstorms in eastern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania this evening will continue to lift northeastward overnight and they should weaken gradually. They are not anticipated to reach our forecast area. The line of showers and thunderstorms extending from northern Ohio, across far northwestern Pennsylvania into southwestern New York this evening are associated with the approaching cold front. These showers and thunderstorms are expected to hold together overnight although they may weaken a bit. The line may reach the Poconos toward daybreak. Overall, we are forecasting a partly cloudy sky overnight with mainly high and mid level clouds. Localized fog is possible. The wind should be light and variable. Conditions will remain warm and humid with lows mostly in the lower and middle 70s. The cold front works its way through the area Saturday, with the best chances for thunderstorms being mostly south and east of I-95 in the afternoon. Am a little surprised with how quiet some of the CAMs are for tomorrow but still went with chance PoPs for thunderstorms. MUCAPE values from 1000 to 2000 J/kg would support thunderstorms but am worried there may be too much residual cloud cover from earlier convection as some of the guidance seems to be indicating. The SPC seems to highlight this trend with the only Marginal Risk being across portions of Delmarva. High temperatures Saturday will still be hot, but 5 to 10 degrees cooler than today in the upper 80s to near 90. Southwest winds will gradually shift west-northwest in the wake of the front from 5 to 10 mph. && .SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/... Cold front sags south into the Mid-Atlantic Saturday night as high pressure builds over the Great Lakes and into eastern Canada. Showers taper off from north to south in the evening, but may linger over southern Delmarva. Mostly dry and mild Sunday with highs around seasonal normals and dew points dropping into the 50s. Some showers may linger over far southern Delmarva due to its proximity to the departing front. High pressure moves into New England Sunday night. Conditions remain dry across the majority of the forecast area. && .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... High pressure moves into the Gulf of Maine early in the new week and will remain in place through the end of the week. Return flow sets up behind the departing high, and the frontal boundary over the Mid- Atlantic lifts back north as a warm front. Surface high pressure remains over the Gulf of Maine while mid- level high pressure will be just off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Several shortwaves will approach from the west, but due to the positioning of this sprawling high pressure, it looks like any showers and thunderstorms that develop and approach will really only make it to the far western zones. An aspect to watch is the track of what is currently Tropical Depression Fred. Its remnants look to take a track up Florida and the Southeast, then along the spine of the Appalachians before emerging off the Mid-Atlantic coast. This could lead to increasing humidity levels from the middle to the end of the week, as well as showers that may result in locally heavy rain. It is still quite early, so for now, will carry high chance PoPs Wednesday through Thursday for this potential. Another front may approach late next week. && .AVIATION /00Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG, KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas. Overnight...Mostly VFR with some localized MVFR visibility restrictions after 08Z. Variable wind 6 knots or less. Medium to high confidence. Saturday...Mainly VFR with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Variable wind 6 knots or less, becoming northwest 5 to 10 knots. Medium confidence. Outlook... Saturday night...VFR. N winds less than 10 kt. High confidence. Sunday...VFR with N/NE winds from 5 to 10 knots. High confidence. Monday through Tuesday...Mainly VFR. Scattered afternoon SHRA/TSRA possible, mainly over KRDG/KABE. Winds E-SE less than 10 kt. Moderate confidence. Wednesday...Sub-VFR possible in SHRA. S winds less than 10 kt. Low confidence. && .MARINE... Sub-advisory conditions expected through Saturday. Southwest winds from 10 to 15 knots and gusts to 20 knots overnight. Rip Currents... A southerly wind around 10 MPH, breaking waves of 1 to 2 feet and a short to medium period south southeast swell are expected to result in a LOW risk for rip currents on Saturday. The wind is forecast to become northeast 10 to 15 MPH on Sunday with breaking waves around 2 feet.
