.SYNOPSIS...
A lee side trough will develop to the west of the Mid Atlantic
region today, before shifting eastward Wednesday through
Friday. A cold front is forecast to move across the east coast
Friday night into Saturday. High pressure build across the
northeast states late in the weekend into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As anticipated a weak convergence zone set up near the center
of our area in association with a primarily W-E oriented surface
trough. A weak mid level shortwave ridge is pushing into the
region as evidences on WV imagery and as the day shift yesterday
suggested would happen, is adding just enough lift to support
showers and thunderstorms across southern Jersey and parts of
southeastern PA.

Further north and west stratus has developed over the Lehigh
Valley, Poconos and NW New Jersey. This is expected to continue
through the overnight hours with the stratus slowly pivoting
around towards the Philly metro area. With all of the low
stratus hanging around there may be brief periods of light fog
but I dont expect fog to hang around for a prolonged period.

As with move towards later this morning, expect today to start
feeling like a warm summer day across the Mid Atlantic. We'll be
looking at warm/moist southerly flow prevailing over the area,
between the Bermuda High and the a low passing over the Great
Lakes. Highs should reach around 90, and with dewpoints in the
low-mid 70s we will likely see heat index values approaching 100
degrees. However in these types of regimes, sometimes the heat
is slower to set in, and with more substantial heat concerns
looking likely later in the week we held off issuing an advisory
for today. Heading into the afternoon, a prefrontal trough
moving trough central PA and central NY will push some showers
and thunderstorms towards our western locales. The main dynamic
forcing should stay to the west so I did not include mention of
showers across the shore.

Hot and humid conditions continue through Tuesday night as
overnight lows barely get into the low to mid 70s with dewpoints
staying in the 70s throughout the evening and quickly
increasing towards daybreak. The solid southerly flow should be
enough to prevent any fog from forming overnight.

&&

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
The Short Term period begins Wednesday with a weak mid-level
low continuing to push away from the area. Meanwhile, a low
amplitude mid-level trough will push slowly eastward from the
Dakotas toward the Great Lakes region through Thursday and close
off over the Hudson Bay as it does so. Southwesterly return
flow will result Wednesday and continue through the end of the
week with subtropical ridging extending from the western
Atlantic into the Southeast and strong low pressure across
Hudson Bay.

A few weak mid-level perturbations and surface troughing
developing from central/southeastern Pennsylvania into the upper
Delaware River Valley should be enough to initiate some diurnal
showers and thunderstorms Wednesday through Friday. Instability
should be highest on Thursday however (MLCAPE >2000 J/kg), so I
suspect Thursday will see the intensity of convection. An
approaching cold front and dynamic forcing will be in closer
proximity to the region Friday though, so coverage should be
greatest then. The column will be fairly saturated (not much in
the way of dry air layers) and effective shear should remain
limited (~20 kts or less), thus the organized severe threat
should remain limited. Nevertheless, some water-loaded wet
microbursts could be possible with the stronger cells leading to
at least some isolated severe potential. The latest CAM
guidance suggests the potential for a broken line of convection,
which seems reasonable given the parameters in place.

The bigger story remains the expected extended period of
excessive heat and humidity starting Wednesday through the end
of the week. Temperatures and dewpoints will be on the rise
starting Wednesday amid the southwesterly surface flow with
highs in the low to mid 90s for most and dewpoints in the low to
mid 70s. Resulting heat indicies Wednesday should climb above
100 degrees away from the coasts and higher terrain and some
areas, mainly across the urban corridor and Delmarva region, may
reach or exceed 105 degrees. By Thursday, the flow turns more
westerly introducing more downsloping into the equation and thus
temperatures should be a couple degrees warmer with most areas
forecast to see highs in the mid 90s. Resulting heat indicies
Thursday are forecast to rise into the low to mid 100s area wide
outside of the Poconos. There won't be much relief at night
with lows in the low to mid 70s for most. The lack of any low-
level dry air leads me to believe there won't be much in the way
of dewpoints mixing out unfortunately.

As of this update, we have upgraded the Excessive Heat Watch to
a Warning for Wednesday through Thursday and have issued Heat
Advisories elsewhere for locations currently expected to reach
or exceed their local criteria during the Wednesday and Thursday
periods. The hot and humid conditions area expected to linger
into Friday as well with highs in the low to mid 90s, dewpoints
in the low to mid 70s, and heat indices near 100. However,
confidence is not currently high enough (timing of approaching
cold front, cloud cover, and convection) to warrant extending
the current headlines through the Friday period. Speaking of
Friday, have maintained mention of higher end chance PoP for
areas along and north/west of I- 95 as this will be the area
with the greatest forcing and instability for convection.
Details of any potential severe weather threat remains a little
unclear at this point given differences in the timing of the jet
maxima and cold front to the north, but Friday could certainly
see a little more widespread coverage of thunderstorms and
severe weather potential given the synoptic setup.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
The mid-level trough axis and associated jet maxima will slowly
near and pass north of the area on Friday. An associated cold
front will also push toward the area from the north late Friday
into Saturday. As suspected, the guidance was a little too
progressive with the cold front and the cold front is now
expected to move through the area sometime Saturday. As a
result, have kept likely PoP in the forecast for Saturday.
Medium range guidance isn't very robust with instability, so I
think the severe/thunder threat will remain limited.

As the front stalls out near or just south of the area into
late Saturday into Sunday, chances for showers and thunderstorms
will remain for the remainder of the weekend and into Monday,
although thankfully with more seasonably temperatures.

.AVIATION /08Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
The following discussion is for KPHL, KPNE, KTTN, KABE, KRDG, KILG,
KMIV, KACY and surrounding areas.

Rest of the overnight...Showers and isolated tstms will
continue to affect terminals from PHL northward through the
overnight hours. Stratus has developed to the north and will
start to wrap around from the west towards PHL. This will likely
bring some restrictions to MVFR by later tonight. Winds mostly
light and variable but favoring a light southeasterly direction
if anything. Low confidence regarding the CIG forecast for later
tonight.

Today... Generally VFR the morning stratus mixed out. Showers
and thunderstorms may impact KRDG/KABE late in the afternoon
bring flight restrictions. S-SW winds around 10kts. Moderate
confidence.

Tonight...Generally VFR with light southerly flow anticipated.

Outlook...
Wednesday through Friday...Mainly VFR, but scattered showers and
thunderstorms are forecast during the afternoon and evening hours
which may locally lead to ceiling or visibility restrictions. The
greatest coverage of thunderstorms is forecast to be on Friday,
especially along and north/west of I-95. Southwesterly winds 5-10
kts during the day and 5 kts or less at night. High confidence on
the overall pattern.

Saturday...Sub-VFR restrictions probable in widespread showers and
thunderstorms. Westerly around 5 kts. Moderate confidence.

.MARINE...
Sub-SCA conditions are expected through Tuesday night with seas
only 2-3ft and generally southerly winds gusting 15-20kts. An
occasional gust up to 25kt is possible but not over a duration
that would warrant issuing an SCA. Showers and thunderstorms
associated with a weak convergent boundary will like impact the
Atlantic coastal waters through the early morning before
dissipating.

Outlook...
Wednesday through Saturday...Sub-advisory conditions area forecast
through the remainder of the week. South to southwesterly winds 10-
15 kts with some gusts up to 20 kts possible during the daytime
hours. Afternoon and/or evening showers and thunderstorms possible,
mainly Friday and especially Saturday. Seas mainly 2-3 feet.

At 102 AM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from Shamong to near Egg Harbor City. Movement was
east at 15 mph.

HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph and pea size hail.
