.SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday Afternoon...Snowfall that has
inundated the forecast area the last couple days has finally
started to let up as the NW to SE oriented back end of the
snowfall continues to move east out of the region. The upper level
shortwave trough that brought moderate to heavy snowfall across
the forecast area last night and this morning has also exit the
region this afternoon to the southeast leaving behind onshore
northwesterly flow aloft. Any lingering snowfall in the lower
elevations will likely diminish by this evening, while upslope
light snow in the mountains will be prolonged by northwesterly
flow aloft overnight. With a return of onshore flow aloft today,
will likely see the last of the cold arctic air temperatures
tomorrow morning while temperatures gradually moderate to near
normal through the next week.
Light snow will continue to be confined to the mountains through
tomorrow afternoon while the lower elevations will see mostly
light winds and occasional decks of mid to high level clouds
streaming over. The next system composed of an upper level
shortwave and surface frontal boundary will approach the region
late tomorrow afternoon, increasing cloud cover from the
northwest. Late Sunday evening, frontal boundary will impact the
region with increasing snow chances across the forecast area. More
moderate and occasional bands of heavy snow will move across the
forecast area Sunday night and early Monday morning. Models do
indicate some warmer air filtering into the region aloft from the
south, which if realized will also bring a chance of freezing
rain. At this moment, warm air aloft will mostly move over
portions of central OR and over the Ochoco-John Day Highlands,
with the furthest north extent over the Columbia Gorge. That
said, any freezing rain accumulations will be less than .05" with
areas of .05"-.1" possible along the east slopes of the OR
Cascades. By the late morning and early afternoon Monday, warmer
air will have mixed down to the surface, decreasing freezing rain
chances. Other than freezing rain, snow levels across the rest of
the forecast area will start to rise late Monday morning with
some locations across central OR seeing a rain/snow mix late in
the morning and possibly rain in the afternoon. Rest of the
forecast area including the Lower Columbia Basin and adjacent
valleys will still see light snow chances into Monday afternoon.
Breezy conditions will also develop from south to north as this
system impacts the forecast area, with drifting snow possible.

.LONG TERM...Monday night through Friday. System departing the
area Mon night with the flow becoming more northwest. Upslope snow
will continue over the Cascades and Blues with decreasing
precipitation over the Columbia basin into central Oregon. Similar
conditions for Tue with upslope snow over the mountains. Upper
ridge building in Wed with partly to mostly cloudy skies. The
weather pattern becomes more active Thu into the weekend with a
series of storms moving across the region. These will be a little
warmer coming in off the Pacific so expect mountain snow and lower
elevation rain. The first system will be on Thu with a stronger
one Fri into Sat. The models are in good agreement. High temperatures
through the period will be in the 30s and 40s which should allow
for some snowmelt during the daytime hours. Overnight lows mostly
in the teens and 20s. Heavy snowpack will likely result in a
slower warming trend. 94
