.UPDATE...The heaviest of the snow with the current weather system
has occurred already. However, there will continue to be light
snow over mainly the Foothills of the Blue Mountains and the Blue
Mountains themselves. Will let the current system's advisories
expire this morning. It is considerably colder this morning, as
the current system moves off to the south and east with a
reinforcing arctic back door cold front. With a decent snow cover
now on the ground in the lower elevations too, tonight's minimum
temperatures will be very cold. Minimum temperatures will be
mostly in the single digits mountains to lower to mid teens in the
lower elevations. Any wind will amplify the cold temperatures
with low wind chills. However, winds are expected to remain light.
The next weather system will arrive late tonight and continue
through the day Thursday into Thursday night before tapering off
Friday morning. This next system will be stronger with more
moisture than the current weather system, and it has the potential
to produce heavy snow over the Blue Mountains and the all of the
Foothills, the John Day Highlands, and the Cascades (especially
the WA Cascades). Will likely be issuing Winter Storm Warnings or
Winter Weather Advisories for these areas for late tonight through
at least Thursday evening. Again, winds will be mostly light, but
this system will bring yet another reinforcement of the very cold
air over the region for Thursday night through Saturday morning.

SHORT TERM...Today through Friday Night...
A fast moving shortwave trough continues to provide sufficient
lift for light to moderate snow across portions of far southern
Washington into northern and central Oregon. Recent radar imagery
combined with DOT webcams from across the region show decent snow
accumulations in these areas. Brief heavier snow bands have at
times developed, leading to a quick half inch of new snow in some
areas. As we head toward sunrise and into the later morning hours,
snow should gradually end from north to south as the upper wave
departs and drier air slips in behind a cold front. Hi-res
ensembles are in generally good agreement with this depiction, and
feel confident in the timing of existing winter weather
advisories. Given slightly better snow potential in the John Day
Basin, went ahead and added this area to the existing advisory.
Once the snow ends, near term guidance and ensembles suggest
skies may clear briefly with some sunshine this afternoon. Breezy
north/northeast winds coupled with highs in the teens and 20s most
areas, will still make for a brutally cold day with single digit
wind chills in many areas. Some areas may see wind chills below
zero
High and mid level clouds will rapidly spread in from the north
and west this evening and overnight as another storm system
approaches the region. This system looks to pack quite a punch,
with high confidence in heavy mountain snow, especially from the
Cascade Crest west, and across the Blues/Wallowas. With a
favorable upslope flow into the Blue Mountains, some of the
adjacent foothills may also see heavy snowfall, though confidence
is slightly lower in these areas. Across the remainder of the
Columbia Basin, total snow accumulations look to be relatively
light, but this will depend largely on where any banding sets up
with relation to another passing cold front. In addition to snow
potential, it looks to remain quite cold with highs ranging from
the low 20s north to mid 30s across central Oregon. Overnight and
morning lows will continue to fall into the teens and single
digits with the coldest values where winds are light and snowpack
is high. Thursday morning currently looks to be the coldest
morning owing to widespread snowpack and light winds associated
with weak surface high pressure. This is when readings in the
single digits and perhaps even below zero will become more
probable where abundant snowpack exists.
Snow looks to gradually taper off on Friday from north to south
as a reinforcing shot of cold dry air spills into the region
behind a front. This will knock highs back down into the teens and
20s for many areas and the remaining snowpack will most certainly
have an impact on sensible temperatures as well, especially where
cloudy conditions persist. Austin/79
LONG TERM...SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY...
The extended period is characterized by fairly consistent
snowfall over the Cascades through the weekend before snow chances
spill over into the Basin during the early part of the workweek.
Precipitation will be transitioning from snow to rain across the
Lower Columbia Basin and into the foothills through the day on
Monday and again on Tuesday, but will switch back to a wintry mix
and snow overnight as low temperatures dip back into the upper
20s. The other weather concern involves breezy to windy conditions
across Central Oregon, the Blue Mountains, and through the Grande
Ronde Valley beginning Sunday. Wind speeds are expected to peak
Monday, with gusts reaching 30-40 mph out of the south.
The long-term period begins as an upper level ridge infiltrates
into the Pacific Northwest in the wake of a departing upper level
trough located in the Desert Southwest. This ridge will allow for
a brief break from lower elevation precipitation and will also
usher in warmer temperatures, although highs will still struggle
to get above freezing for the Basin. Northwest flow aloft will
continue to keep snow falling at elevation over the Cascades and
Blues Saturday, but will come to a halt into Sunday as the ridge's
axis passes through our area and flow aloft becomes more from the
west, and then more southwesterly late Sunday into Monday. This
is a result of an the exiting ridge giving way to a strong upper
level trough approaching the Pacific Northwest. The system
originates along the Gulf of Alaska over the weekend and drops
down the British Columbia Coast Sunday before stalling off the
coast of Vancouver Island. The marine air mass associated with
this dropping system will allow for temperatures to moderate as
highs break into the upper 30s to low 40s and lows near freezing
for lower elevations beginning Monday and continuing through the
midweek. This temperature flux will attribute to overnight
snowfall transitioning to rain across the basin as snow levels
increase into the 2000-3000 feet range by late Monday morning.
Similar conditions occur Tuesday, but much less pronounced as the
trough axis passes through and proceeds into Montana, keeping snow
levels between 500-1500 feet Tuesday into Wednesday. Snow amounts
should be much less significant for lower elevations through the
long term, as the Basin stays below an inch, but 2-4 inches will
be possible through Central Oregon - primarily late Monday into
Tuesday. The Blues are expected to pick up 6-12 inches, with
another 12-20 inches likely over the Cascades.
Guidance is in fairly good agreement with the overall pattern,
but differences still arise regarding ridge/trough strength and
timing. The ECMWF still incurs a stronger ridge over the weekend,
which inhibits digging of the incoming trough on Monday and keeps
it more focused off the coast of British Columbia versus the GFS
which drops it down the California coast and elongates the trough
southward. The ECMWF instead, flattens the trough as a deep
Pacific ridge builds and extends the trough from the Aleutian
Islands through the Pacific Northwest and into the Northern
Rockies by Wednesday. Thus, the GFS would keep temperatures colder
and winds higher, but would attribute to a slightly drier outcome
than that of the ECMWF. The 500 mb EOF patterns highlight this
difference regarding the incoming trough, as ensembles are also
split when viewing the cluster heights. The cluster phase space
hints at more confidence in the ECMWF through the weekend in
association with the ridge and ridge strength, but does become
less obvious through the workweek and actually shifts to slightly
more confidence in the GFS scenario. The NBM does a good job
through the timeframe, with the exception of capturing the
elevated wind gusts Sunday through Tuesday and higher snow ratios
early in the period due to frigid temperatures. 75
AVIATION...12Z TAFS...Variable conditions across sites this
morning with MVFR at all sites with the exception of LIFT at
RDM/BDN due to low OVC002 ceilings and freezing fog developing.
Conditions should continue to degrade slightly through the morning
as a system drives through the area, attributing to low ceilings
and periods of reduced visibilities due to snowfall. Conditions
are expected to improve after 18Z as VFR will be likely for all
sites except ALW, which will fluctuate between VFR and MVFR due to
lower ceilings and reduced visibilities as another system
approaches from the north. 75
