.SHORT TERM...(Today through Thursday)
Issued at 327 AM CST Tue Feb 16 2021
In the very cold airmass over the PAH forecast area, radars and
observations continue to indicate snow flurries/snow showers occurring
mainly east of the MS River as the last of the mid level
vorticity begins to depart our region this morning. We believe
this will continue through at least 15Z especially for the
Evansville Tri-State region, before drier air begins to filter in
from aloft.
Surface pressures will be on the rise once again between systems
today. In fact, the western half of the region will probably see
some break-up in the cloud cover. Western parts of southeastern MO
may get into the lower 20s as a result, but the majority of our
region is in for another frigid day in the teens with plenty of
snow cover in place, but with a gradually subsiding wind. We will
continue to cover negative wind chills this morning with a Special
Weather Statement.
The reprieve in the wintry pcpn will be brief. The mid level flow
is progged to go southwesterly again tonight, and model consensus
depicted a semi-split arrangement in the embedded shortwaves, and
thus two surges of pcpn. The first one should result in a burst
of snowfall across the region tonight and Wed. However, for about
a 12 hour period (06Z- 18Z Wed), most of southeastern MO has the
potential to receive a quick 2+ inches of snowfall, especially
west, and in the higher elevations. Thus, in general agreement
with surrounding offices, we thought a Winter Weather Advisory was
warranted for all but Mississippi county MO. We thought leaving a
possible Winter Storm Watch (farther east) for the dayshift was
the least confusing way to go at this time.
The second surge of pcpn is expected to begin Wed night and linger
through the day Thu. Pcpn type is expected to be mostly snow, but
late Wed night/early Thu drier air aloft may interfere with the
ice nucleation process and cause periods of freezing rain to
occur for a time. Western KY could have significant amounts of
snowfall, especially the Pennyrile region of KY. One bright spot
in this forecast is that temps Wed/Wed night/Thu are expected to
moderate a bit.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday night through Monday)
Issued at 327 AM CST Tue Feb 16 2021
We will be saying farewell to our second winter weather system by
Thursday night as the main upper trough swings through and shoves
the deeper moisture east of the area. Surface high pressure will
steadily moving into the area through the night as well. While we
have lingering PoPs mentioned in the 00Z-06Z Friday time frame,
would not be surprised to see those dropped with future forecasts.
If there is any last minute activity in the far eastern counties, it
will be light. Temperatures Thursday night into Friday morning look
to be brutally cold with lows in the single digits in most
locations. These temperatures along with the wind that will likely
still be up a bit, will lead to below zero wind chills, especially
across the western two thirds of the CWA.
While there may be a couple of minor disturbances rotate through the
area on Friday into Friday night, moisture will be limited so not
much more than some scattered flurries should result. Strong
northwesterly flow, along with what looks like could be a mostly
cloudy day due to lingering low level moisture, means chilly
conditions for Friday. Most places will not get above freezing.
By Saturday, we will be in strong northwest flow aloft to start the
day, but a weak upper ridge will migrate east through the day.
Strong warm air advection will be picking up throughout the day.
However, with our snow pack and the possibly of low clouds, we won't
have the opportunity to reach too far into the 30s, but at least we
should break above freezing in most locations across the region.
There is still a fairly strong signal that we could see 40 degrees
or above on Sunday. However, by this point in the forecast, we
will likely be seeing an increase in moisture ahead of our next
system. There are obviously timing issues this far out, but the
Sunday into Sunday night time frame looks to be our best bet for
the next chance for precipitation. Right now, it appears as though
it should start out as rain, but may end with some frozen
precipitation. Beyond that, the first part of next week looks dry
and warmer.

Most areas are currently VFR but some locations have dropped down
to MVFR (cigs/vsbys) with some flurries or light snow showers.
Over time today, we should see the deep layer moisture thin out.
Aside from some MVFR cigs/vsbys associated with the scattered snow
flurries this morning, going to trend more optimistically given
some of the latest guidance. West northwest winds should be 5 to
10 kts this morning and then taper off to light and variable by
this evening. Lower cigs will arrive shortly after 12Z, as another
surge of moisture and light snow re-enter the area from the west.
