The National Weather Service in Paducah has expanded the

* Flood Watch to include portions of southern Illinois...southwest 
  Indiana and southeast Missouri, including the following areas, in 
  southern Illinois, Alexander, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, 
  Johnson, Pulaski, Saline, Union, White and Williamson. In 
  southwest Indiana, Gibson and Pike. In southeast Missouri, 
  Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Perry MO, Ripley, 
  Scott, Stoddard and Wayne MO.

* From this evening through Sunday morning

* A consistent signal for locally heavy rain is forecast,
  especially Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Storm total
  average rainfall is forecast to be up to 2 inches in the Watch 
  area and, with thunderstorms forecast, localized higher totals to 
  3 inches or more are possible. This amount of cumulative rainfall 
  will be falling on recently soaked grounds from melted snowfall, 
  so the ability to soak in all this expected rainfall will be 
  compromised and likely to cause flood issues.

* Low lands, streets, small creeks and streams, will respond fastest 
  with standing water and flooding. Heavier, more sustained or

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Sunday night)

A weak surface low is moving across the Deep South early this
morning. A stationary front sets up along this path with heavy
rain potential. Up north in the Quad State, however, lighter
precipitation will enter the area this morning and be a factor
throughout the day. Rain chances will be highest in Western
Kentucky, with rainfall amounts up to a quarter inch possible
near the Tennessee border. With morning lows around the mid-30s
near the Ohio River and in Southeast Missouri, a few snowflakes
may mix in before a quick switch to only rain. Cloud cover, and
an eastward progression of a shortwave upper-level ridge, will
help keep highs a little cooler than yesterday, near 50.

Hi-res models vary tonight on the timing and placement of light
rain. PoPs are left mainly in the chance category, higher towards
the southern KY Pennyrile. There is some potential for fog
formation tonight, especially if gaps in cloud cover can collocate
with areas damp from the light rain. Saturday is trending towards
a dry morning with PoPs creeping back in from the southwest late
afternoon.

The main event begins Saturday evening. A low pressure system is
expected to cross from the Central Plains northeastward towards
the Great Lakes. This system will drive a more southerly flow
across the Quad State ahead of it, helping to draw the
atmospheric river of Gulf moisture further northward. A trailing
cold front with the northern low is expected to move towards the
Quad State Saturday night. The most recent model cycle is trending
towards more models and ensemble members focusing heavy rain with
the front near the Ohio River Saturday night with less emphasis
on portions of Western Kentucky further south/east of the Ohio
River. WPC, in turn, has shifted the area of heaviest rain in this
direction as well. Other models/ensemble members still take a
more blended approach with the highest rainfall values closer to
the Tennessee border.

Specific humidity, precipitable water, and integrated vapor
transport continue to be 2-3 standard deviations above normal,
capable of producing some flooding issues. Thunder chances are
focused on Saturday night as some thunderstorms are possible
ahead of the cold front with models continuing to show some CAPE
in the 6-12z time frame. No strong to severe storms are
anticipated, so the only hazards with the thunderstorms should be
lightning and heavy rain. Flooding issues are likely to primarily
take the form of ponding from hours of moderate to heavy rain, but
thunderstorms could contribute to some localized higher rates
with more rapidly developing flooding issues. Extra caution will
be needed on roads as this is mainly an overnight event.

The cold front is not expected to pass through until early Sunday
morning so the overnight lows Saturday night will be warm leading
to highs earlier in the day ahead of the front before a cooling
through the afternoon. Northwesterly flow will push into the Quad
State, and the axis of moderate-heavy rain will shift towards the
south. As a result, Sunday rain will primarily be over Western
Kentucky into Tennessee, continuing to shift towards the southern
Tennessee River Valley for Sunday night. Sunday night lows for the
Quad State will be back down into the 30s.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday)

Forecast confidence decreases after a dry Monday forecast.

High pressure pressing southeast from the Midwest will bring dry
and seasonably cool conditions to the region on Monday. Thereafter,
deterministic models diverge greatly with the handling of a possible
mid level low lifting ne out of the southwestern United States. The
ECMWF lifts a much stronger system through the Southern Plains into
MO/IL Tuesday/Tuesday night, while the GFS brings a much
flatter/weaker low east into the lower OH Valley Tuesday night.

Neither the NAEFS or the ECMWF ENS viewers show much of any signal
through the period, with the GEFS WSUP viewer suggesting a rather
weak signal farther south towards the northern Gulf Coast region.
Therefore, decided to just run with the NBM numbers for POPs, which
brings some chancey POPs for generally light precip amounts mainly
Tue/Tue night time frame, with another weak signal as we finish the
long term Wed night into Thu.

With systems coming from west to east within a generally zonal H50
pattern, expect temps to run a bit above normal in the mid to late
week time frame.

which low level moisture will increase rapidly from the south.
Cigs in the northern third of the region should remain unlimited
to VFR into the afternoon while the rest of the region will see
