(Today and tonight) Issued at 137 AM CST Mon Dec 13 2021 Synopsis: The warming trend continues today with temperatures around 15 degrees above average for mid-December. Cloud cover and moisture will increase markedly tonight, especially across southeast Oklahoma. Meteorological details: The downslope-warmed thermal ridge will be farther to the east today with higher low-level (925-850 mb) temperatures than yesterday afternoon. As a result, most locations should be warmer with highs ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s deg F. The magnitude of the east-to-west temperature gradient should be less given the low-level thermal field will be closer to being homogeneous. Continued breezy southerly winds/moisture advection should result in higher dew points, so fire weather conditions should be lower than yesterday. However, elevated fire weather conditions are still expected across parts of northwest Oklahoma this afternoon given the warm temperatures, breezy winds, and low relative humidity. A Fire Danger Statement (RFD) was issued because there are very dry fuels (ERC values >90th percentile) in this area. By tonight, isentropic ascent and moisture advection should increase appreciably. Stratus and fog will be possible across southeast Oklahoma. There might also be sufficient ascent for a few showers. In addition, warm air advection will likely result in steady and/or rising temperatures overnight across much of the east. Mahale && .LONG TERM... (Monday night through next Saturday) Issued at 422 PM CST Sun Dec 12 2021 The mid-level ridge remains overhead as a trough moves ashore the west coast on Tuesday. The H850 LLJ will also aid in enhanced moisture return and subsequent stratus development across southeastern Oklahoma Monday night and Tuesday. Mid-level heights begin falling on Tuesday and will lead to a deepening lee-side low. The results in increased southerly winds, with enhanced fire weather risk across northwest Oklahoma on Tuesday. The upper trough then crosses Arizona and enters New Mexico Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the LLJ strengthens overhead. The mid-level trough becomes more compact upon passing the southern Rockies and a potent jet streak (~130kts at 500mb) is prog'd to strengthen as it passes over northeastern New Mexico, the panhandles and southwest Kansas Wednesday morning. While the GFS has trended quicker with the progression of this trough, very windy conditions and well-above average temperatures are still expected on Wednesday. Went ahead and lowered dewpoints towards the 10th percentile for northwest Oklahoma and increased winds according to the 90th percentile given the pattern. With very dry vegetation (ERCs > 90th percentile), near critical to critical fire weather conditions are expected across far northwest Oklahoma on Wednesday. A fire weather watch and/or red flag warning, in addition to a wind advisory, will likely be needed. The trough lifts northeast and the associated cold front moves into the area Wednesday night through Thursday morning. There's a chance of showers, and with some elevated instability expected, a few thunderstorms are also possible late Wednesday, though chances are greater to our east. A northern trough then swings across Canada and the northern plains by end of the week, and a strong front then descends out of Kansas into our area by Friday night. Flow aloft then splits, and a southern stream trough forms near Baja or the desert southwest. While the NBM is trending colder, the center of the cold air mass is currently projected to remain far to our northeast. Greatest precipitation chances, for now, are across southern and southeastern Oklahoma on Friday with some appreciable rainfall possible in these areas.
