Area forecast discussion, Jun 24, 10:57 PM CDT, 3 hours 22 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Norman OK 1057 PM CDT Thu Jun 24 2021 ...New AVIATION... .UPDATE... Issued at 931 PM CDT Thu Jun 24 2021 Overall, convection across the Texas Panhandle this evening has been on the decrease. The gust front associated with a line of storms continues to become further removed from the main area of storms. However, one severe storm north of Perryton should make Harper county over the next hour, but will likely decrease in intensity. Will keep PoPs fairly low across northwest Oklahoma through midnight to 1 am. Most areas will remain dry tonight with a breezy south wind, but some high based showers are possible across far northern Oklahoma overnight. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Friday) Issued at 214 PM CDT Thu Jun 24 2021 Heat advisory will continue through the rest of the afternoon with heat index values of 105-108 being reported early this afternoon. Humid conditions could lead to similar heat index values in a similar area Friday afternoon. However, there is a low chance for isolated showers/storms and clouds in that area Friday morning which could have an impact so will hold off on issuing a heat advisory for Friday for now and let night shift decide when hopefully have a better idea on whether the rain/clouds will occur. Back to this evening, some showers/storms could develop near a sfc trough affecting NW parts of the fa this evening. If any storms do affect the area this evening, they could become strong to severe with strong winds the primary concern. As previously mentioned, low rain chances will continue east overnight/early Friday across parts of northern OK. Models show a higher chance for showers/storms beginning Friday afternoon then increasing Friday evening. Some strong to severe storms will be possible again starting late Friday afternoon. && .LONG TERM... (Friday night through next Wednesday) Issued at 349 PM CDT Thu Jun 24 2021 By Friday evening, expecting surface lows to be in place across both western Kansas and the Texas/Oklahoma Panhandles, along with a surface boundary stretched inbetween forming a dryline. As the southerly low-level jet increases with the upper trough starting its dig into our forecast area, showers will be likely Friday evening across western and northern Oklahoma. Moderate to strong surface based and elevated instability will be sufficient for strong to severe thunderstorms, with wind gusts and hail as the primary hazards. Both NAM & GFS robust with this system project a strong mid-level vort max in an area of strong instability and fairly strong deep layer shear across the Central/Southern High Plains for multicell to even a few supercells moving across far northwest Oklahoma, where severe weather will be the most favorable. Expecting storm coverage to increase across our area overnight into Saturday as the surface boundary pushes eastward and the upper trough continues to dig. Although strong to a few marginally severe thunderstorms will be possible Saturday a strong surge of Gulf based moisture being transported into this storm system may result in heavy rainfall with flash flooding possible. With 2.0 inches of Preciptable Water lingering, cannot rule out a flooding hazard extending into early next week. By Sunday, models generally stretch the surface boundary/cold front along the I-35 corridor, although there is still some disagreement with the exact location. Mid-level vorticity ascent rotating through the negatively tilted trough will maintain storm chances on Sunday, with the best chances by afternoon across central and portions of southern Oklahoma. Although the instability to work with may be sufficient for strong to a few marginally severe storms mainly across our southeast, heavy rainfall under some of these storms could still produce a flooding potential. By Monday, the higher storm POPs will extend mainly across southeast Oklahoma where the surface boundary may have shifted. With a strong upper ridge persisting across the western United States, our upper trough is expected to remain in place through next week. As a result, our wet pattern will also remain in place with low POPs through Thursday. As far as temperatures, went a little bit cooler than NBM for Saturdays MaxT and used the CONSMOS, which was closer to the MEX guidance that keeps trending cooler over the past couple of runs. With the expected rainfall, cloudy skies, and the surface boundary, will see cooler than seasonably average temperatures by Saturday and that cooling trend through next week. High temperatures will generally be about 10 degrees cooler than average for late June. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1048 PM CDT Thu Jun 24 2021 A shower or two may impact WWR around 6-7Z otherwise, VFR conditions are expected at all TAF sites through at least 21Z Friday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop across northwest Oklahoma between 22-23Z and could bring MVFR conditions, perhaps IFR conditions, to WWR. Thunderstorms may also bring at least MVFR conditions to CSM and PNC mainly after 2-3Z Saturday. && .UPPER AIR...
