Camas Prairie into southern Shoshone county is expected to weaken
and gradually shift south tonight with rain and high elevation
snow gradually coming to an end. A winter weather advisory remains
in place for the Camas Prairie (mainly above 3000 feet) through 7
PM. Cameras at 130 PM were showing snow beginning to taper off at
Winchester but with more radar returns over NE Oregon some snow
may redevelop.

Attention then turns to a low off the WA coast and Vancouver
Island that will send a pair of mid level waves across the region.
Once again models, and ensemble data are showing a wide range of
potential snow totals leading to only low to moderate confidence.
But confidence does vary depending on location (more on that
later).

Fortunately, there is better agreement with the first wave that
moves up overnight into Monday morning over North Central WA.
850mb winds out of the south bringing warming to SE WA as 850mb
temps climb to +2C, while colder air is banked up against the
Cascades with 850mb temps near -5C. The relative milder air will
get forced up over the cold wedge along the East Slopes for
enhanced lift. Widespread snow is expected to develop from the
Wenatchee area up into the Okanogan Valley westward into the
Cascade valleys. Models show the highest qpf in and around the
Methow Valley with 3-6" snow possibly by Monday afternoon. The
Okanogan Valley may also see enhanced snow totals which will be
close to the area of maximized lift. The Wenatchee area and
Waterville Plateau should see lighter amounts of 1-2". Although
the 18z GFS run shows considerably more which isn't helping
confidence levels in this area. It is worth noting that
temperatures in Wenatchee and Omak have warmed into the low to mid
40s this afternoon. If cloud cover is quick to thicken this
evening this could lead to lows near or slightly above freezing
and less accumulation. But given the low dewpoints in the low to
mid 20s and at least some breaks in the clouds this evening
temperatures should drop quickly.

Additional waves from the low track in Monday afternoon into
Tuesday morning. Models show rising snow levels Monday afternoon
into the evening as warmer air from SE WA penetrates north. The
question is how much will they rise? The ECMWF and NBM are some of
the more aggressive solutions showing even the northern valleys
changing to rain Monday afternoon, while the GFS is the coldest
solution producing snow for the duration of the event for the
northern valleys with moderate to local heavy snow amounts. The
Spokane area, and I-90 south there is better agreement that there
will at least be a period of rain mixed in for the lower
elevations, before snow levels come back down towards the tail end
of the precip event. Thus there is moderate confidence that snow
totals will be on the lighter side for valley areas along the I-90
corridor from Vantage to Spokane southwards through the Palouse.
Northern valleys carry low confidence. Given the GFS is the odd
model out with the lowest snow levels, the forecast sides towards
a light to moderate snow event for places like Republic, Colville,
and Sandpoint. The LC valley is expected to receive mainly rain
and no accumulation. JW

Tuesday night through Thursday: Upper level trof containing very
cold and conditionally unstable airmass is over the forecast area at
this time but void of significant shortwave disturbances. As such
temperatures remain on the cold side with overnight lows in the
upper single digits to near 20 that only warm to mostly 20s to near
30 during the day. Any pops for light snow remain confined to within
close proximity of the Cascades and North Idaho with essentially
nothing of note in between. By Wednesday night the trof is
translated to the east and a cold northwest flow sets up. This will
help to shunt most of the dynamics and moisture associated with
another incoming weather system to the south thus any pops and QPF
that show up in the forecast for Wednesday night are very light. On
Thursday a disturbance drops down from the northwest in this
persistent cold northwest flow, however moisture feeding into it is
limited. This allows for a greater portion of Eastern Washington and
North Idaho to hold onto moderate pops but the snow amounts in the
forecast to remain light with the highest amounts over locations
that do well producing snow with such and approach from the
northwest (Blue Mountains, Camas Prairie, portions of the Idaho
Palouse and portions of Shoshone County).

Friday through Sunday: Positively tilted flopover ridge may keep a
good part of Friday precip free however ensembles suggest another
weather system dropping down from the northwest Saturday. This
system has a well established moisture source feeding into it as it
passes over the cold air at lower levels. The result should be snow
levels remaining at valley floors and higher snow ratios resulting
in a more fluffy Saturday snowfall. The system exits the area by
Sunday however conditions will remain cold with snow levels at
valley floors and a favored storm approach from the

18Z TAFs: Bands of rain and mountain snow should stay mainly south
of KPUW and KLWS today but some light rain is possible at times.
Light snow accumulation for the Palouse is possible. Visibility
and ceiling reductions may also accompany the precipitation
enhancement. Dewpoints in the upper 20s and some enhanced boundary
layer should result in mainly MVFR conditions over the region
today. The next weather system approaches tonight into Monday.
Easterly flow will favor light snow developing in the Cascades
including KEAT. Conditions will likely lower to IFR. Over Eastern
WA/N Idaho some recent model data suggest precipitation may start
sooner (12-18z Monday) compared to our current forecast so this
will be looked at closer with the 00z TAF issuance. JW
