.SYNOPSIS...
Areas of light snow will continue into the early evening hours over
far Eastern Washington and north Idaho tonight. Additional rounds
of snow are expected this week beginning Tuesday night. This mid-
week event will likely impact travel at times, especially over
Central and Northeast Washington into the Idaho Panhandle.

.DISCUSSION...

Tonight and Tuesday: Light dusty snow continues to drift across
eastern WA and parts of the Idaho Panhandle. This will continue
into the early evening hours and the move northward into Canada.
Overnight into Tuesday, the elongated trough moves further inland,
but with limited moisture. Tomorrow, dry conditions are favored
with light winds. There will be a relatively moist boundary layer
and, with light winds, will keep the region wide stratus in place
through the day. With this cloud deck and limited warming today,
tonight's lows will be cool and below normal with the trough in
place. Tuesday's highs will be below seasonal and only reaching
temperatures in the upper 20s and low 30s regionwide.

Tuesday night through Wednesday: As the low continues to churn off
the northwest coast, the active weather returns Tuesday night with
the arrival of a shortwave trough and cold, wet conditions make
their way inland. The mid-week event's arrival and precipitation
intensity continue to remain relatively persistent across model
runs. Snowfall will be the main concern with this event. Winds
will be light and Tuesday night may be breezy in the Basin and
Cascade slopes, but only reach peak gusts to 15-20KTs.

Snow levels will remain low keeping all precipitation snow, except
for the Lewiston area and lower Basin which may receive a rain-snow
mix depending on time of day. Snow will arrive overnight Tuesday
moving in from the southwest. Initial impact will be in the Cascades
and slowly becoming widespread on Wednesday. Models continue to
produce the greatest snowfall in the Waterville Plateau, Okanogan
Highlands, and Eastern Cascade slopes. 24 hour snow amounts may
reach 4-6" across those areas, in locations such as Wenatchee,
Waterville, and lower Methow Valley. The Spokane-Coeur d'Alene
corridor, throughout the upper Basin, and into northeastern WA,
snow from 1-3" is possible in the low lands and higher elevations
may see up to 4-6" in 24 hours. We will need to look further into
issuing winter weather advisories across part of the Inland NW.
This is due to the significant snowfall, in only 24 hours, for
some of these locations. The Wednesday morning commute will need
to be approached with caution due to the snow depth in the morning
and ongoing snowfall during the day. JS

Wednesday night through Friday: Lingering light snow, mainly in
the mountains. Friday's snow will be more centered over the
Panhandle. Less than an inch of additional snowfall is expected in
the valleys. Temperatures could be warm enough for the lowlands
to mix in with or transition to rain by the afternoons.

Saturday and Sunday: This weekend into early next week looks to
bring additional chances of moderate to possibly heavy mountain
snow. Much of the lowland snow accumulations will probably be too
warm for significant snow accumulations and instead receive rain
or a mix, but this forecast may change. Valleys north of the metro
may stay cold enough for significant snow. RC

06Z TAFs: Widespread stratus expected tonight due to light winds
and continued moisture in the boundary layer. CIGS and visibilities
have improved over the Basin and eastern slopes, but there may be
some patchy fog in the early morning hours. IFR to marginal VFR
expected through most of the period for stratus induced ceilings.
Clearing expected by the end of the TAF period before another
shortwave is exepcted to bring another round of snow to the
region starting with EAT late Tuesday. /JDC
