.SYNOPSIS...

as the arctic air loses its grip on the region but generally
remain below normal through the week.

.DISCUSSION...

...WIDESPREAD SNOW SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY TO BRING TRAVEL
IMPACTS TO THE INLAND NORTHWEST...

Today: The Inland NW will remain north of a strong upper-level
jet draped across Northwestern WA and Eastern Oregon. This will
continue to deliver cold temperatures similar to those felt on
Saturday but without much in the way of wind or wind chills. The
flow at 850mb is beginning to switch to east/southeast which is
resulting in weak warm advection. This will bring a heavy presence
of cloud cover today with spotty on and off flurries or periods
of light snow. Models are not showing much or any QPF away from
the Cascade Crest but with air mass as cold as it is, it is
possible to squeeze out a few tenths with only trace amounts of
moisture.

Late Sunday through Monday night:
Confidence remains high- light to moderate snowfall in much of the
INW which will likely impact Monday morning travels. The system
will bring highest amounts to the Cascades, Palouse, and areas
South and West of the Palouse, with at advisory level snow
amounts expected. Heavy snow is possible for Stevens Pass. It will
essentially be a conglomeration of multiple waves of energy
moving in from the Pacific, and it may behave like a quasi-
stationary warm front stalled over our area. Then it will begin to
dissipate into Monday night. This setup could lead to locally
higher snow amounts.

The Lewiston area is a location of considerable uncertainty. Max
temperatures Monday will likely be above freezing. The
disagreement on how warm it will get means it could either
transition to rain in the afternoon or not, and if not, snow
totals will be higher than our current forecast. RC

Tuesday: Light snow will continue in the Idaho Panhandle and at
times, portions of Eastern WA on Tuesday as a frontal band
remains draped across the region and disturbances drop in from the
northwest. The Blue Mountains, Palouse, Camas Prairie, and
Central Panhandle Mountains of ID will receive the brunt of the
snow on Tuesday but showers will have the potential to expand
westward into Spokane, Grand Coulee, Republic, and Omak.
Temperatures will begin to moderate allowing snow levels to lift
above the L-C Valley and many locations across the lower Basin
should warm above freezing.

Wednesday through Sunday: Snow showers will taper off Wednesday
morning with a generally dry day in store for much of the region.
Deterministic and ensemble model solutions suggest another active
weather pattern to commence on Thursday and continue into next
weekend. The storm track will remain from the west and northwest
allowing cooler than normal temperatures and opportunities for
snow however our resident Arctic air mass will lose its grip on
the region and temperatures will feel more like January with highs
bouncing back into the mid to upper 30s and lows in the teens to
twenties. It will be even warmer across the lower Basin and L-C
Valley with precipitation falling as a mix of rain/snow or just
all rain. The flow pattern suggest the heaviest precipitation, ie
snow will fall along the Cascade Crest and Idaho Panhandle and at
times, expand into far eastern WA. /sb

.AVIATION...
06z TAFS: Snow showers will gradually taper off tonight as winds
remain light. During these next few hours, light snow could still
bring visibilities briefly down to IFR levels for COE-PUW-EAT.
Low ceilings will likely stick around overnight and bounce between
VFR and marginal VFR given the moisture in place and weak flow
aloft. Our next system arrives Sunday but there is very large
uncertainty as to when the snow will actually start. Wilson
