.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure brings quieter weather to the Inland Northwest for
Wednesday. Another frontal system will bring snow to northeast
Washington, the Palouse, and north Idaho on Thursday along with
gusty afternoon winds. Heavy mountain snow will also fall in the
Cascades and Panhandle mountains Thursday into Friday. Quieter
weather is expected this weekend.

.DISCUSSION...
Today: Shortwave ridging can be seen on satellite imagery by the
clearing skies that are spilling into Washington from British
Columbia. Lingering snow showers are finally moving southeast into
central Idaho and northern Oregon early this morning. Area roads
in the LC-Valley and in the Camas Prairie look like they are
trending wet/slushy and not so snow covered anymore. As such, the
banding of snow showers have prompted the continuation of the
winter weather advisories to continue through 8 am for winter
driving conditions during the early morning hours when travel gets
going again.

Under northerly flow aloft, cooler air is filtering in from the
north. 850mb temperatures observed yesterday evening around -3C
should trend a few more degrees cooler this morning, and as such
current temperature readings as of 2 am are trending 7F to 10F
colder than yesterday morning. Today we'll see a break in the
weather, although it will be chilly and just below seasonal normal
for temperatures.

Thursday: A lot to talk about. Early Thursday the winds aloft
will begin backing from the north to the west with the approaching
trough moving into northwest Washington. Moisture advection and
lift in the dendritic growth zone will overcome any warming aloft
that tries to raise snow levels. The snow levels will still be
efficient at snow production for a prolonged period of time across
the Cascade mountains. Some model sounding guidance suggests
enough spill over east of the Cascade crest to produce snow into
the eastern slope valleys. Confidence is not very high for the
eastern slope valley snow amounts, but the Cascade Crest including
Stevens Pass confidence is pretty high.

Have hoisted a winter storm watch for early Thursday through late
Friday for snow in these areas. The persistent PVA and jet
alignment should favor prolonged snowfall at the Cascades.

Looking farther east, models aren't as excited about snow amounts
across the Columbia Basin, into Spokane and Coeur d'Alene areas.
However, there is some snow accumulation that looks favorable in
the early hours Thursday through Thursday evening. Several inches
of snow should impact the morning commute. However, with the
relatively warm surface temperatures and taking into consideration
the time of year and sun angle, thinking the sun will help to
overcome the amount of snow that remains on the ground during the
day Thursday. Will wait for the next shift to analyze this and
issue any products.

Winds Thursday will become breezy to gusty out of the south mainly
across the southern Columbia Basin before shifting to the west
early Friday with the shortwave sliding south through Washington.

Friday: A shortwave trough will push into the region from the
north Friday morning following the one on Thursday. This will
bring the potential for very light lowland snow, but most of the
precipitation looks to be confined to the mountains. Behind this
trough, a -30 to -38 C 500 mb cold pool along with modest CAPE
values and lapse rates will set up over the Columbia Basin into
far Eastern Washington and the Idaho Panhandle Friday afternoon
into the early evening. This will create a favorable atmosphere
for isolated convection. As a result, heavy showers of graupel or
snow and the occasional flash of lightning will be possible with
these storms. Southwest winds will persist throughout the day on
Friday, with gusts up to 30 to 40 mph for the east slopes of the
Cascades across the Basin and into the Palouse, the Spokane area,
and the Camas Prairie.

Saturday through Tuesday: The trough will begin to dig into the
desert southwest late Friday into Saturday. The trailing edge of
the trough will allow for a north-south oriented upper level jet
to set up over Eastern Washington. This northerly flow will bring
relatively cooler and drier air to the area, clearing skies Friday
night through Sunday. Morning lows will be a few degrees cooler
than the previous days due to the additional radiative cooling.
Patchy fog will also be possible Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Surface winds will switch to the north/northwest Saturday, and
bring the potential for breezy winds down the Okanogan Valley into
the Columbia Basin on Saturday before calming on Sunday.

Weather turns quieter mid weekend as an upper level ridge pushes
into the PNW Saturday afternoon. There may be light snow showers
in the Cascades and the Panhandle mountains, but overall it looks
like it will be a nice weekend for the Inland NW. After Sunday,
there are large discrepancies among models on how long the ridge
will stick around. However, temperatures look to be trending
relatively warmer into the next work week. VMT

12Z TAFS: Low level stratus or isolated fog looks promising to
develop from Pullman-Spokane-Coeur d'Alene-Sandpoint this morning,
resulting in marginal VFR conditions. Short duration IFR
conditions are possible especially for Pullman. Clear skies and
VFR conditions are expected elsewhere in the region today. /Dewey

The active and unsettled pattern will take a brief break
Wednesday. Thursday and Friday will see additional heavy snow
accumulations for the Cascade mountains and passes. Eastern slopes

creeks rising from recent rain on snow.
