Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Spokane WA 941 PM PDT Sun May 30 2021 .SYNOPSIS... It will be a warm and dry Memorial Day under mostly clear skies and light winds. Temperatures will climb into the 90s through Thursday, with Wednesday looking to be the hottest day of the week. A cold front will bring some cooling and potential for breezy winds around Thursday. A cooler and wetter pattern is expected for the end of the week into the weekend. && .DISCUSSION... Tonight through Tuesday night: Are you ready for summer-like temperatures? Confidence is high that a strong upper-level ridge will strengthen over the Northwest this week delivering very warm temperatures and dry conditions. How anomalous is this ridge? If 500mb heights reach 586 decameters or higher on Tuesday, it would tie/break the record for June 1. So how warm will it be? To give some reference, temperatures this afternoon have warmed into the 70s and lower 80s. For Monday and Tuesday, tack on another 5-6 degrees each day and we should see widespread valley temperatures into the 90s by Tuesday afternoon. Overnight lows will also become increasingly warmer eliminating any concern for freezing temperatures in our sheltered northern valleys. Temperatures should still cool enough to kick on the natural air conditioning that we are accustomed to as overnight lows continue to dip into the 40s and 50s. Winds will be light and terrain driven with speeds generally 10 mph or less. /sb Wednesday through Saturday: Models are in good agreement that Wednesday will be the warmest day this year, with record breaking temperatures expected. Temperatures across the Inland Northwest will be in the mid 90s to low 100s which is about 20 to 25 degrees above average for early June. There will be a moderate to high risk for heat related impacts on Wednesday, especially for those sensitive to the heat and those without effective relief sources from the heat. By Wednesday night into Thursday, the ridge begins to shift east and the pattern looks to stay active through the weekend. First, a weak front looks to push into PNW overnight Wednesday. This will bring slightly cooler temperatures, breezy winds, and a chance for thunderstorms. Temperatures will still be quite hot on Thursday with widespread highs in the 90 expected, but will cool a few degrees each day. Confidence in the potential for thunderstorms is quite low at the moment as the front and elevated instability suggest thunderstorms, but high values of CIN may limit any development. If thunderstorms were to develop, the greatest chances look to be limited to the will be for the Blues, L-C Valley, and the Camas Prairie. The active pattern continues as another trough moves over the region sometime late this week into the early weekend. Model ensembles keep the Pacific Northwest under the influence of a cool trough through the weekend. This will allow temperatures to cool back into the upper 60s and 70s. Winds will also be breezy to gusty through the weekend with gusts over 30 mph possible Friday and Saturday across the east slopes of the Cascades, the Columbia Basin into the Palouse and the Spokane area.
