.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure over the region will move offshore Wednesday. A cold
front will cross the Tri State Area Thursday night into Friday
morning. High pressure builds back into the Northeast over the
weekend. A coastal storm may impact our area early next week, but
there is a lot of uncertainty with its track and strength.
&&
.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Minor adjustments were made with this update to capture latest
trends and obs. High clouds can be seen on satellite already
over western portions of our area ahead of shortwave ridging.
This may cause low temperatures to run a few degrees higher.
Otherwise, much of the area has great conditions for radiational
cooling.
This will allow for a chilly night due to dry airmass in place.
Sided closer to NBM the percentile for low temperatures
tonight, ranging from mid 20s in outlying suburbs to low/mid 30s
along coast and in city. Keeping frost/freeze headlines as is
for those locations where the program has not yet ended for the
fall.
&&
.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Gradual warming trend gets underway Wednesday as high pressure
moves offshore and S/SW flow develops. We should see an increase
in mid/high clouds as warm front approaches but lower levels
remain too dry for any showers or sprinkles. Followed NBM
guidance for temperatures with highs in 50s to near 60, then in
warm sector Wednesday night, temperatures won't drop off to
much, mainly in 40s and lower 50s.
&&
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Large scale pattern is expected to feature a long wave trough
crossing Eastern third of country for the end of the work week,
followed by more zonal flow over weekend. This will drive a cold
front through region Thursday night into Friday, which will be
accompanied by a band of showers, with rainfall totals averaging
around 1/4 inch. Not seeing any signals in guidance to support
thunder at this time.
From there our confidence decreases in details, but medium range
models are in decent agreement on a closed 500 mb low diving down
from Great Lakes and becoming blocked by strengthening ridge over
North Atlantic. This scenario certainly isn't a lock at this time
range and in fact it's also possible upper low doesn't close off
until it passes farther northeast into New England per the more
progressive GFS. Should more amplified model solution verify, it
would develop a secondary low that should deepen rapidly as it lifts
northward along coast or perhaps inland. Obviously we are too far
out in time to say which scenario is more likely (more amplified vs
more progressive) so this is something that will be worked out over
next few days. At this point be aware of the potential for a storm
system somewhere in the Northeast in the Monday-Tuesday time frame
next week, which could impact holiday travel. For now forecast
reflects NBM guidance with chance PoPs for rain during that time.
&&
.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
VFR as high pressure over the region moves offshore Wednesday
afternoon.
Light wind overnight should become SE-S by mid to late morning
morning and increase to 7-10 kt in the afternoon. There is a
chance that some terminals could see a period of MVFR cigs
during the evening, from the NYC metros north/west. LLWS also
possible west of the NYC metros in the evening, mainly
KEWR/KTEB with SW winds of 35 kt at 2kft.
...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...
No unscheduled AMD expected.
.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Late Wednesday night...VFR.
.Thursday...VFR early, then MVFR possible NW of the NYC metros in
the afternoon with chance of showers.
.Thursday night...MVFR at times with showers likely. LLWS possible
coastal terminals.
.Friday...VFR. NW winds 15-20G25kt, diminishing at night.
.Saturday and Sunday...VFR.

.MARINE...
High pressure over waters moves offshore Wednesday, resulting in
increasing southerly flow ahead of a cold front which should
cross waters Thursday night with band of showers. Gusts could
reach SCA criteria (25-30kt) ahead of front in SW flow Thursday
as well as behind front Friday in NW flow. This should also help
seas build as high as 6-8 ft on ocean waters Thursday into
Friday.
Winds and seas diminish this weekend as high pressure builds
over region.
&&
.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic impacts expected. Rainfall totals should average
around 1/4 inch Thursday night.
