Temperatures drop into the middle to low 20s for typically cooler spots, namely the interior and the LI pine barrens. Elsewhere, temperatures will drop into the low to upper 30s. && .SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Upper level ridge axis builds into the area on Wednesday as surface high pressure shifts offshore as a complex low pressure system develops over the Central US. With high pressure to the east, flow becomes southerly as a warm front approaches the area into the afternoon and evening. Skies become increasingly cloudy through the day with high temperatures above average, generally in the low to middle 50s. The warm front approaches during Wednesday evening and lifts to the north by Thursday morning. There will likely be rain showers associated with the passage of the warm front Wednesday night and into the early hours on Thursday, though the best chance for any rain is for Interior locations to the north. The region then remains in the warm sector of the large developing cyclone over the Northern Great Lakes. With a deep WSW flow over the region, temperatures will be well above average with highs potentially in the low 60s for much of the area. Some record highs may be in jeopardy for Thursday in and around the NYC metro. A weak cold front then approaches Thursday night, gradually crossing by Friday AM. At this point, with limited moisture and forcing, only a light shower event signaled with passage. An unseasonably mild night (low temps higher than daytime highs) with cloud cover and still unseasonably mild airmass. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/... A cold front will be just entering our area by the start of the period. It is associated with a low pressure center well to our north, in northeastern Canada. With the best forcing also to our north, the front will likely come through dry. The front will stall while over, or just south of, our area and then eventually return farther north as a warm front. Because of this quick return, there is no real change in airmass. The warm front is pushed north in association with cyclogenesis and frontogenesis in the Ohio Valley. Some gradual isentropic lift can be seen in the model fields with warm air advection aloft late Friday night, when rain will become likely. At the onset, some areas will be cold enough for some snow in the interior. However, this looks to be mostly a rain event. Rain is expected to continue into Saturday. The center of the low passes overhead Saturday night, and cold air filtering behind the low may be able to once again produce some light snow showers across the interior. High pressure builds in behind the low through Monday. Latest 12z guidance has come into better agreement in handling of the low pressure system late Monday through Tuesday. The track has shifted well south as the northern stream and southern stream never really phase. All guidance actually keeps us dry now, with another low passing well to our north. Have kept slight chance PoPs in the forecast in case this trend does not continue. && .AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... High pressure builds in from the north tonight, then offshore on Wednesday. A weak warm front passes through Wednesday night. VFR forecast through the day Wednesday with ceilings dropping to MVFR around 00Z Thursday for western terminals and an hour or so later for eastern terminals. Showers will move through, mainly after 20Z Wednesday, but coverage is too low to put in as prevailing, so opted for VCSH. The best chances for showers will be across the Lower Hudson Valley, and have to added -SHRA for KSWF from 23Z Wednesday through 06Z Thursday. Visibility may come down briefly with any heavier showers, but for the most part, not expecting restriction to visibility at this time. The best chances for restriction to visibility will be for northern terminals (KSWF, KBDR, and KGON), so added TEMPO groups from 03-06Z Thursday for this possibility. NE winds overnight are near 5-6 kts for the city terminals, light (5 kts or less) and variable direction expected elsewhere. Winds become more E-SE Wednesday morning at speeds of 5-10 kt. Winds shift to the SW after 06Z Thursday. NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...
