Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
157 AM EDT Wed Nov 3 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will build from the west into mid week. The high
will then remain in control through early next week, while low
pressure passes well offshore Thursday night and then again
late this weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
Radar indicates precip with an exiting front is now offshore,
with trailing clouds over SE CT and eastern Long Island. These
areas should clear out overnight, and this combined with a shot
of cool, dry air and light NW winds will result temperatures
around the freezing mark for a few hours across portions of the
interior. Freeze warnings remain in effect for Western Passaic,
Orange, Putnam, and northern Fairfield counties, with frost
advisories in the adjacent zones. Patchy frost will also be
likely just inland of the coast across SE CT and eastern Long
Island.

Lows will range from the lower 30s across the interior, to
around 40 along the immediate coast. Spotty freezing
temperatures are also likely across the Pine Barrens region of
Long Island. These values are near or just slightly below avg.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
High pressure over the mid section of the country will build
east for the mid week period. Another shortwave trough passes to
the NE Wed afternoon with a weak surface trough passing. NW
winds in the morning will back a bit to the W in the afternoon,
before becoming more northerly late. A few gusts of 15-20 mph
will be possible in the afternoon.

Wednesday night will once again feature light winds and clear
skies. Lows across the interior are forecast to be a bit colder
than previous night with a hard freeze possible (28 degrees or
lower). These same locations are under a freeze warning for
Tuesday night. Should that not happen, another freeze warning
will likely be needed for these locations. Elsewhere, a freeze
watch has been issued for interior southern CT east of
Fairfield county and for southeast Suffolk county on Long
Island. Additional frost advisories will also be likely for
areas outside of the NYC metro that are not under a freeze
watch.

Highs on Wednesday will be in the upper 40s well inland to the
lower 50s elsewhere. Lows will range from the upper 20s well
inland, to around 40 across the NYC metro. These temperatures
are about 5 to 8 degrees below normal.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
There has not been much change in the overall thinking for late
this week through the upcoming weekend. The latest global
models are in general agreement through this timeframe.

A northern stream shortwave trough will approach on Thursday and
move across the region Thursday night into Friday morning. Low
pressure is going to develop ahead of this shortwave, but well
offshore. There have been some hints of a weak inverted trough
stretching back towards the Long Island coast. Have left in a
slight chance PoP Thursday night along the southeast coast, but
otherwise no impacts to the region are expected.

High pressure will settle over the Mid Atlantic and Northeast on
Friday and then slowly shift north and east over New England
on Saturday. Heights build aloft Friday ahead of an approaching
progressive upper ridge, which moves across on Saturday. Another
northern stream shortwave approaches Saturday night. At the
same time, a southern stream shortwave will be moving over the
southeast. The southern stream is likely going to develop low
pressure along the southeast coast or Carolina Coast Saturday.
The modeling continues to be in general agreement that the two
streams will not phase in time to bring the low up the coast.
The two streams remaining unphased Sunday and Sunday night allow
the low pressure to pass offshore and not track northward along
the coast. There are a few ensemble members that phase a bit
quicker and since it is six days out, the timing and phasing
could change. Have kept the forecast dry Sunday into Sunday
night for now. The upper trough axis moves offshore on Monday
with high pressure returning early next week.

Temperatures Thursday and Friday will be below normal with highs
mainly in the lower 50s. Nighttime lows should range from around
30 inland to the mid/upper 30s elsewhere. There should be a
gradual warming trend this weekend into early next week with
temperatures returning close to seasonable levels.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
High pressure will build in today. A weak trough will pass
through late day into early this evening.

VFR. NW winds under 10 kt should back WNW and increase to around
or just over 10 kt, with a few gusts 15-20 kt possible at some
terminals mainly NYC metros north/west. After trough passage
from about 22Z-23Z, winds should shift NW and diminish to under
to 10 kt.

 ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

No unscheduled AMD expected.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Late Wednesday night through Sunday...VFR. N-NE winds G20-25kt
possible on Sunday.

Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component
forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

&&

.MARINE...
As cold front exits east overnight, a few gusts up to 20 kt will
be possible through the day today.

Sub-SCA conditions are expected from Thu through Sat with a weak
pressure gradient in place. Low pressure passing well offshore
may bring minimal SCA conds on Sat night into Sunday, with
gusts up to 25 kt and seas building to around 5 ft.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
No hydrologic impacts expected.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Astronomical tides will run as little as a few tenths below
minor flood thresholds for the more vulnerable coastal
communities mid to late week. Isolated/brief minor coastal
flooding is possible in these areas with the Thu AM high tide.
Potential for minor flooding is a bit higher with the Fri AM
high tides due to offshore low pressure.
