What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this areal flood warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS New York, NY wrote its last area forecast discussion before this areal flood warning went out at Oct 27, 1:37 AM EDT, 21 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Oct 27, 1:37 AM EDT, 21 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service New York NY
137 AM EDT Wed Oct 27 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure southeast of Nantucket will pivot closer to
the area overnight into Wednesday morning, before drifting to
the southeast on Wednesday. High pressure will build in briefly
on Thursday. Low pressure will impact the area by late Friday
into the weekend, followed by high pressure early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM THIS MORNING/...
For this update just adjusted the hourly forecast database to
better reflect latest status with strong low to the east. Mainly
just edged up POPs for the next few hours as radar will remain
busy for a few more hours, although the rain is more of a lighter
rain.

The attention now basically turns to the wind threat. With high
pressure over eastern Canada, the pressure gradient will
increase as the low track towards us towards daybreak. A strong
low level jet of 65-75 kts will pass through far eastern areas
overnight as the low approaches. The low will momentarily begin
to back in and move from the NE to SW. Still expecting gusts on
the ground to reach up to 65 mph across eastern Suffolk county
and coastal New London, thus the High Wind Warning. Also
maintaining the Wind Advisory farther for Nassau County and
southern Fairfield. Wind gusts in these advisory locations are
expected to reach up to 55 mph. These winds peak mainly after
6-7z and into the mid morning on Wednesday.

&&

.SHORT TERM /6 AM THIS MORNING THROUGH 6 PM THURSDAY/...
Northerly winds will remain elevated through the day and will keep
headlines up through the afternoon for now. A drier airmass will
advect into the area with dewpoints dropping to the low 40s
Wednesday night. As the low heads east the pressure gradient will
relax and weak high pressure will begin to build in. This will allow
winds to decrease slowly through the day. Skies will gradually clear
all well, but the daylight hours will likely remain mostly
cloudy. Western most locations will be able to clear out earlier
and this will allow them to see cooler low temperatures.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...
Not much change to the overall fcst thinking thru the weekend. High
pres ridging swd from Canada will produce dry wx on Thu. As the high
builds swd on Fri, low pres will be approaching from the sw. This
will do two things. The first is that it will attempt to erode the
leading edge of the pcpn shield. The second is that it will
strengthen the pres gradient resulting in increasing ely winds thru
the day and into Fri ngt. The leading band of rain should get here
nonetheless by 00-6Z Sat, tracking thru the area Fri ngt into Sat.
The ECMWF is a bit slower than the GFS by about 6 hours. Both models
similarly place the h5 low over wrn NY state at 6z Sun. By that
point, additional rain is expected to be more showery in nature and
in coverage, with the wcb displaced well to the east of the mature
low center.

High pres builds in for Mon with a seasonal airmass producing temps
near normal. The polar front begins to dip down towards the area
thereafter. Tue is most likely dry ahead of the boundary, but very
low chances based on the NBM have been retained due to timing
uncertainties.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...
***HIGH IMPACT COASTAL STORM INTO THIS MORNING***

Strong low pressure southeast of Nantucket will pivot closer to
the area early this morning, before drifting to the southeast
through this evening.

Light to moderate rain will continue through about 09z with
activity tapering off thereafter. MVFR ceilings should prevail
through this morning with a chance at brief periods of VFR
ceilings. MVFR is likely to continue into the afternoon before
VFR prevails late in the day and at night. The MVFR may linger
longest across Long Island and southeast Connecticut.

N winds will increase as the offshore low gets closer, with
speeds 20-30 kt gusting 40-50 kt for the Long Island and CT
terminals between about 08Z-15Z. Winds will be a bit weaker
around the NYC metro terminals, generally around 20 kt gusting
30-35 kt. A peak gust up to 40 kt cannot be ruled out 08-15z.
N winds weaken slowly late this morning and the afternoon with
gusts 20-30kt likely. Gusts should end this evening with
sustained winds weakening further.

 ...NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty...

There is a chance ceilings could end up higher and largely be
VFR into the afternoon due to the northerly flow. Peak wind
gusts 35-40 kt possible 08z-15z.

.OUTLOOK FOR 06Z THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY...
.Wednesday night...Becoming VFR. Diminishing N winds.
.Thursday...Mainly VFR.
.Friday...MVFR or lower cond in rain late in the day and at
night. E winds 10-15 kt G20-25kt, highest at the coast.
.Saturday...Chance of MVFR or lower and chance of showers.
.Sunday...Mainly VFR.

Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component
forecasts, can be found at: https:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

&&

.MARINE...
Low pressure strengthens and approaches from the east-northeast
overnight. This will bring high winds and waves to the waters.
The two eastern Sound zones, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and the
eastern ocean zone are all under a Storm Warning. Winds could
gust to 55 kts. Over the ocean zone waves will reach 10 to 15
feet and over the Sound and Bays waves will reach 5 to 8 feet.
All other waters are under a Gale Warning and can see winds up
to 45 kts. Winds and waves will slowly diminish Wednesday
afternoon as the low departs the area and the pressure gradient
decreases.

NE winds will continue to diminish on Thu, with speeds blw sca
lvls by the end of the day. Seas on the ocean will generally
remain aoa 5 ft thru Thu ngt. E winds increase on Fri and Fri
ngt on all waters. Gales are possible. Winds fall blw sca lvls
for the weekend, but seas on the ocean may remain at advy lvls
for the duration of the weekend. High pres builds in for Mon
with seas falling blw 5 ft on the ocean.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...
Rain tapers off Wednesday morning with drying conditions taking
place from west to east.

No hydrologic impacts are expected Thu. An inch or more of rain is
possible in the Fri-Sat period in association with the next low pres
sys.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Brief and localized minor coastal flooding possible along the
most vulnerable southern and east bays locations during tonight
high tide.

Another round of widespread minor coastal flooding likely along
the twin forks and south shore of LI Wednesday afternoon.
North facing shorelines will be most susceptible with gale
force northerly winds resulting in enhanced breaking wave
action. Localized minor coastal flooding possible across the
rest of the north shore of LI due to wave action.

Large breaking waves along the oceanfront into tonight will
result in areas of dune toe erosion with localized overwashes
during the times of high tide tonight. The north shore and east
end of Long Island will also be subject to minor beach erosion
and shoreline flood issues.

Another storm late this week may also have potential to produce
minor to locally moderate coastal flooding and high surf/beach
erosion Friday into Saturday.
