Have opted to expand the winter weather advisory into more areas
of eastern NE this afternoon and tonight. Still looking at some
snow to develop this afternoon, and then end as a period of
freezing drizzle this evening as we lose deep layer saturation on
the back side. While snow amounts up to an inch aren't much of a
concern, any amount of freezing drizzle for a few hours late this
evening into the overnight could make for some messy travel.

Looking ahead to Monday, models remain consistent in developing
heavy snow south of Interstate 80, with several inches possible.
Have initiated discussions with other NWS offices and WPC about
the need for a winter storm watch for Monday for southeast NE and
southwest IA, with the potential for at least 6-10 inches of snow.
Will likely be getting that product out a little bit later this
afternoon after taking a look at the 12Z EC and various ensembles.

Today and Tomorrow:
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today from noon until
midnight for Platte, Butler, Seward, Saline, and Jefferson
counties. The primary concern in those areas is accumulating
freezing drizzle. However, the potential for icing isn't as great
as it was 24 hours ago. Short range model guidance suggest that
there will be less warming in the lower levels. It's likely early
on in the event that precipitation does begin as snow. The 850 to
700 hPa level will warm due to warm air advection throughout the
afternoon. There are a couple of questions to be answered here.
Will there be enough warming to remove ice crystals from the
cloud? Will the saturated layer decrease in size enough that super
saturated small droplets result in freezing drizzle at the
surface? Neither has an easy answer. That said, I didn't change
the forecast too much and the forecast still calls for a trace to
0.05 inches of ice accumulation in the advisory area.

Short range model guidance shows an increased amount of snowfall
for areas north and east of Lincoln and Schuyler. Snowfall
amounts of 1 to 2 inches are now expected in those areas. Strong
isentropic upglide from noon to about 6 pm could help some of
those higher end snowfall totals to be realized. Specifically,
the RAP favors a snow band farther south in southeast Nebraska and
southwest Iowa. The HRRR and NAMNest favor a snow band from
Lincoln to Omaha. The peak time for precipitation is between noon
and 6 pm due to the aforementioned isentropic upglide.

Precipitation should come to an end in the evening hours tonight.
Sunday should be uneventful with high temperatures ranging from
29 to 37 degrees.

Monday through Tuesday:
The next event, expected to begin early Monday morning, is
starting to look more impactful. Deterministic guidance from the
GFS/ECMWF/Canadian suggest between 1 to 2 inches of liquid QPF.
Each of those models develop a large swatch of precipitation on
the northwest flank of a rapidly strengthening surface low that
will move off the Rocky Mountains and across the central Plains.
Temperatures are expected to be cool enough that all precipitation
is likely to be snow. The expected snow ratio at this time is
slightly less than 10 to 1. For simplicity sake, using a 10 to 1
ratio would put 10 inches of snowfall down somewhere from this
system. The higher end amounts are supported by ensemble data. The
75th percentile of the NBM suggests a band of 10 inch snowfall in
southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Model guidance varies in
snowfall amounts, but are consistent in placing those peak amounts
in that area. There were discussions of a weather headline for
this event with the neighboring offices. We were in agreement in
waiting for another model cycle run to interrogate whether there
will be consistency in the guidance between model runs.

A cold front is expected to move south through the area on Monday.
That cold front and associated cold air advection combined with
new snow should result in some of the coldest temperatures
observed so far this winter. Expect low temperatures Tuesday
morning to be below 10 degrees for many locations. Even with light
winds, wind chill temperatures along the Nebraska/South Dakota
border are expected to drop below 0 degrees.

Wednesday through Friday:
Yet another system is expected to impact the forecast area on
Wednesday. This system shouldn't be as impactful as the Monday
system. Deterministic model runs suggest 2 to 4 inches of snow
across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

all TAF sites, then transitioning to a period of freezing drizzle.

.DAY ONE...This Afternoon and Tonight

Light snow is expected to develop through the afternoon, then end
as a period of freezing drizzle this evening and overnight. Snow
amounts should remain less than 2 inches, and icing amounts up to
one tenth of an inch could occur after the snow ends. Roads could
become slick and hazardous through the evening. Thus, a winter
weather advisory is in effect for portions of eastern Nebraska
through tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Confidence remains high that a significant winter storm could
impact southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa on Monday. Current
models suggest that several inches of snow will be possible for
southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa along and south of
Interstate 80, and a winter storm watch may eventually be issued.

Another impactful system is possible Tuesday into Tuesday night.
It should have lighter snowfall amounts than the Monday system.
