Today
At 3 AM, an area of light rain showers was moving east out of
western Iowa. Instances of rain actually reaching the ground have
not been widespread but have occurred. The good news is that
temperatures were mainly in the 40s as the rain passed over. This
system will continue to move off to the east today while the
surface low moves from south central SD into central IA. A cold
front will cross the local forecast area by around noon with winds
gusting at times 25 mph or stronger from the northwest. A slightly
cooler airmass will build in as well, but temperatures should
still climb into the 40s and even a few 50s in the southern half
of the area. Could be worse in December.

Winter Weather Late Tonight Through Friday Evening
The impending winter weather maker remains largely on track in
terms of timing and magnitude, although this forecast comes with
some relatively minor adjustments. The overall evolution and track
of the storm system is largely unchanged from previous forecasts
with a neutral-tilt trough coming across the Rockies with multiple
embedded pieces of short wave energy coming into better
organization as the system enters the Plains. A strong jet streak
will be in place from the Dakotas into the Great Lakes tonight
while another jet streak rounds the base of the trough into Kansas
on Friday. Surface low pressure will develop and intensify as it
tracks from southwest KS into north central MO on Friday. This
forecast track is pretty consistent with the ensemble model
consensus, with only a few outliers, and thus confidence in the
track is relatively high. One slight change from previous
forecasts is that there appears to be a trend toward a stronger
low and slightly more wound-up system as it passes to the east.
If it evolves in this way, and recent model consensus is again
fairly strong, this would favor a scenario with reorganization of
the frontogenesis and lift on the northwest flank of the storm
system late Friday...and warrants the continued forecast for
accumulating snow as far south as I-80 and perhaps even a bit
farther south. Other lifting mechanisms such as the deep
persistent isentropic ascent across the region converging into
northern Nebraska Friday morning and the favorable jet dynamics
including a period of coupled jet structure continue to be on
track with previous forecasts. The early part of the event will
also feature mid level dry air across much of the forecast area
owing to the dry east northeast flow early Friday. This dry air
above the lower-level isentropic ascent could lead to a period of
drizzle or freezing drizzle on Friday morning especially south of
a Columbus to Harlan line. The main question with this is if the
moisture and lift in the sfc to 2 km layer will be sufficient to
produce drizzle. It is certainly a plausible scenario and worth
keeping a close eye on given that temperatures will be in the
30-35 degree range and even a small amount of freezing drizzle can
pose a problem.

Far northeast Nebraska continues to be the area with the greatest
likelihood to exceed winter storm warning criteria, and while
forecast confidence is relatively high with this storm system, the
high end amounts in Knox and Cedar counties are still in the 4-8
inch range which is borderline for a warning so will hold off on
issuing for the time being. Vertical motion and moisture within
the dendritic growth layer support snow ratios approaching 15:1 at
times, but the ground is warm and near-surface temperatures are
around 30 with a fair amount of wind so would expect some
fracturing and compaction to bring that snow ratio closer to 12:1
or so. Would expect to see some local banding features given
presence of frontogenesis, CSI, and weak CI that will probably
push snowfall rates to 1" per hour or slightly greater at times.
This will even be possible later in the day on Friday as the
system exits, although any snow bands at that time will likely be
progressive which will limit the overall accumulation amounts
south of an Albion to Onawa line. Still expect some accumulation
though along with cooling temperatures and wind late Friday. Could
see some Flash Freeze issues during that Friday afternoon/evening
time frame with this combination of factors, and would plan on
using caution with travel, even if the total snowfall
accumulations are light.

Sunday into Next Week
After this storm system passes, still have very high confidence in
warming temperatures as a large ridging pattern builds over much
of the CONUS. Current ensemble guidance suggests that we will
flirt with record temperatures next week...with a good chance of
highs in the 60s for Tuesday and Wednesday. A fairly strong storm
system looks to cross the northern Plains by middle of next week,
and while it will depend on the eventual track, it looks like the
main impact here will be a cold front with more widespread precip
well to the north.

Winds from the northwest are expected to increase in speed this
afternoon and have occasional gusts over 20 kts. Winds will weaken
in the late afternoon and evening.

Snow is expected toward the end of the TAF period in the northern
portion of the area along the SD/NE border. Snowfall expected to
begin there near 06Z and slowly spread southeast across the area.
Snow is forecast at KOFK by 12Z. There is uncertainty on the
timing for snow at KOMA and KLNK and it's possible they observe
some precipitation before 18Z. It's much more likely after 18Z
though.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday through Wednesday

Accumulating snowfall is expected late Thursday night through
Friday evening. The greatest chance for heavy snow will be focused
over northeast Nebraska especially near and north of a Neligh to
Wayne to Macy line where 4 to 8 inches of snow is expected with
reduced visibility and blowing snow as winds increase to 30 mph.
Hazardous travel can be expected in these areas Friday into Friday
night.

Farther south, there is a chance for drizzle or freezing drizzle
on Friday morning. If freezing drizzle is able to develop,
untreated roads could quickly become slick and hazardous.

The snow is expected to spread southeast through the day on
Friday, eventually overspreading much of eastern Nebraska and
western Iowa. The greatest chance for accumulating snow will be
near and north of Interstate 80. Snow accumulation in this region
will be lighter but may still lead to hazardous travel conditions,
especially with this being the first accumulating snow of the
year. Flash freeze conditions will also be possible as snow falls
and melts on initially warm roads...but then freezes as colder
air moves into the region.
