Today:
A little shortwave in the mid-levels will pulse through our area
over the course of today. This has lead to snow developing across
much of eastern Nebraska. This will continue to push through the
area through the day and into the overnight. While forcing isn't
particularly impressive, a quick glance at model sounding shows
ample saturation through the dendritic growth zone and snow to
liquid ratios approaching 20 to 1, which should help us to
accumulate some light fluffy stuff. That in combination with a
longer duration event should allow for up to 4 inches of
accumulation in some locations, particularly through the central
part of our CWA. While snowfall rates won't be anything crazy,
still expecting peak snowfall during the evening commute, which
will likely lead to hazardous driving conditions. As noted in the
previous discussion, statistics show that winter weather driving
accidents are more frequent on Fridays from 3-6pm. With that in
mind, we have a winter weather advisory going from now through
Saturday at 6am. Snow is expected to gradually come to an end late
Friday night, but some may see some very light snow linger into
Saturday morning. Though winds will be fairly light, the light and
fluffy nature of the snow will make it easy for snow to blow
across roads even after snowfall ends.
Outside of snow chances the cold continues. Highs today are not
likely to make it more than a couple degrees above 0. That combined
with some light northwest winds, the highest our winds chills
will get today is -10 to -15. BRR!
Saturday and Sunday:
The snow will come to an end across the area early Saturday morning.
But the cold remains. The low temperature Saturday morning will be
-5 to -10 with a wind chill near -20 again. Another wind chill advisory
has been issued for Saturday morning through noon. For the most
part, Saturday will be a dry day but round 2 of snow will be on
the horizon.
This system is expected to mainly impact areas along
and south of I-80, however that's not to say the rest of the area
won't see snow. This system looks to have a bit more lift and still
ample saturation in the DGZ. Snow should move in late Saturday night
and will linger into mid-day on Sunday. When it's all said and
done, expect highest amounts in far southeast Nebraska where
another 1-3 is possible. Amounts decrease to the north.
Temperatures on Sunday are going to be bitterly cold. Not even
expecting the high to make it to the positive side of 0. Wind chills
of -25 to -30 will be likely. Some locations will not even see any
wind chills above -20 through the whole day. A wind chill watch
has been issued for Sunday morning through Tuesday morning. The
watch is for mainly northeast Nebraska, but this will need to be
expanded eventually for areas farther south.
Monday and Tuesday:
While the forecast is dry after the weekend, the dangerous
temperatures continue. The temperature at 6am monday morning will
be 15 to 20 below across the entire area. Add in a little light
wind and that puts the wind chill at -30 to -40. At these
temperatures, it's dangerous to have any exposed skin outside.
Frostbite could occur in 10 to 30 minutes. While a bit of warming
will occur on Monday, don't expect the high to make it above 0 and
the wind chill will remain 10 to 20 below through the day.
Tuesday is not looking much better. The Tuesday morning could see
wind chills of -30 to -40 for the second day in a row. A wind
chill watch has been issued for this period. Expansion of the
watch and issuance of warnings are likely through Tuesday.
