Today:

Light snow has spread across northeast nebraska ahead of a weak
shortwave that will swing through this afternoon.  Light snow will
linger into the afternoon with measurable snowfall remaining
north of I-80. Models suggest that most only see minor
accumulations today at 1 inch or less. Areas closer to the South
Dakota border may see a smidge over an inch, while areas closer to
I-80 will be closer to Trace to 0.5 inches. Snow this evening
will taper off after sunset, and we will see a short dry period.
As far as temperatures go today, we are looking at highs this
afternoon in the single digits across the area. Wind chills today
will remain in the -5 to -10 range. Overnight, expect lows to
drop to 0 to 10 below.

Friday:

The bitter cold continues Friday morning with 6am wind chills at
20 to 25 below zero. Unfortunately, highs on Friday will only top
out a few degrees above 0. Besides the cold, another shot of snow
will move in early Friday morning as another short wave swings
through. Snow will spread across the entire CWA by mid-day. While
forcing isn't particularly strong, long duration, ample moisture,
and a fairly deep dendritic growth zone will allow for slightly
higher accumulations with this one. Snow ratios could also be
approaching 20 to 1 in some spots. With the timing of this system,
expect to have impacts on the Friday evening commute. Snowfall
will linger into the overnight hours on Friday, eventually coming
to an end after midnight. Snow totals will be heavies across the
central and southern parts of our CWA where 2-4 will be possible.
In the far northeast, lower amounts of 1-2 will be possible.

With the expected snowfall in mind, have issued a Winter Weather
Advisory for the central part of the CWA where snow totals are
highest. This includes all of I-80. With the timing of the event,
slippery roads will be possible for the evening commute. Use
caution if traveling. Additionally, have issued a wind chill
advisory for the entire area for wind chill of 20 to 25 below.

The Weekend:

Over the weekend temps will take a dive. By Sunday, expect highs
below 0 across the entire area. Additionally another round of
light snowfall will be possible Saturday night into Sunday morning
across portions of southeast NE and southwest IA where another 1-3
inches will be possible. Additional wind chill products will
likely be needed over the weekend. Especially Sunday morning
where some locations may approach -30 to -35.

Monday and Tuesday:

Monday is going the be the coldest day we have
seen and quite some time. Wind Chills Monday morning will be
dangerous for anyone outside. Windchill will be in the -30 to -35
range across the entire area. If you have to spend any time
outdoors, cover all exposed skin, as frostbite could occur in a
matter of minutes. High temperatures Monday afternoon, will not
make it above 0 in most locations. In fact, the warmest wind chill
we will see on Monday will still be in the -10 to -15 range. While
Tuesday's high temperature may be slightly warmer, the wind chill
will not. Expect another morning of dangerous wind chills with -25
to -35 expected again.

Rest of the week:

But there is some light at the end of this. After our bitter cold
Monday, we will start to see a VERY slow warming trend. While
dangerous wind chills are still expected through the work week, we
may finally see a high near 20 by the end of the week. Long range
models have started to hint at the potential for seeing above
freezing temperatures by the end of the month. For now, lets just
take it a day at a time, and dream of warmer weather.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Friday night)

A west-to-east oriented band of light snow that is accompanied by
MVFR ceilings and very brief periods of IFR visibilities is
passing south of KOMA towards the KLNK TAF site. This band is
expect to continue a gradual diminishing in intensity over the
course of the next few hours, and should leave KLNK dry after 08z.
In its stead, VFR condition are expected to settle in through
late morning, with winds out of the NNE at 7 to 10 kts.

Beginning late morning to early afternoon, light snow is expected
to spread into the KOFK area around 16z, eastward to the KOMA
area around 17z, then southward to the KLNK area by 20z. Ceilings
and visibilities are expected to start only dip to MVFR at first,
then deteriorate to IFR early in the afternoon once the better
and more widespread snowfall begin. This snowfall is expected to
carry through the TAF period, and diminish gradually from 06-12z
Saturday. Runways could see 2-4" by then end of the event Saturday
morning when all is said and done.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of southwest
Iowa...west central Iowa...east central Nebraska...northeast
Nebraska and southeast Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...Tonight and Friday

Light snow is currently falling in eastern Nebraska and southwest
Iowa, and should continue into the early morning hours. Snow
amounts of up to 1 inch are possible, with the highest being along
a line from St. Edward to Fremont. Dangerously cold wind chills
are expected Friday morning, with values bottoming out at -20 to
-25 degrees. A Windchill Advisory has been issued for Friday morning.

Another round of snow is possible Friday into early Saturday
morning. Total accumulations could range from 1 to 4 inches. The
Friday evening commute will be impacted.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Friday night through Thursday

Overnight wind chills will continue to be hazardous through next
Tuesday. Wind chill indices will range generally from 20 to 25
below Saturday morning, and could drop to 25 to 35 below from
Sunday through Tuesday. Additional windchill products will be
needed for the weekend into next week.

And yet another round of additional light snow will be possible
along and south of Interstate 80 Sunday into Monday with another 1
to 3 inches.
