Issued at 312 PM CDT Sun Jul 25 2021 This morning through much of the day, an area of showers and thunderstorms was focused from south central Nebraska into northeast Kansas along an axis of weak-but-persistent low level convergence, moderate MUCAPE, and ample deep moisture. It's worth noting that a minimal amount of forcing was required to initiate and maintain this complex of storms, and the rainfall was impressive with some locations exceeding 3". For most of the area the benefit was widespread high cloud cover which limited temperatures while a good chunk of southeast Nebraska received some light rain. It will be worth watching for similar scenarios to set up over the next couple of days to our north on the edge of the building upper ridge as any thunderstorm complexes to the north may offer a chance to dive south if they can push out a cold pool. As of this forecast, this seems an unlikely scenario as any LLJ convergence is more likely to take place well to the north with a healthy cap locally. The other feature of interest this morning was patchy dense fog. Evening dewpoints in the upper 70s to around 80 hung in the area with light winds, and even while decreasing overnight we were able to saturate and develop some fog. This scenario should also be watched tonight, especially in the southeast half of the forecast area, but seems more likely that a south breeze (and slightly lower dewpoints so far today) should limit the fog potential. We continue to see a heat wave setting up over the area with a focus on Tuesday and Wednesday, but some hot conditions likely on Monday and Thursday as well. The forecast has changed very little from yesterday with a good chance to reach the upper 90s to lower 100s Tues/Wed (hottest on Wednesday). The main question today remains just how the dewpoints will respond. Expect an elevated mixed layer and most all guidance is aggressive in mixing out the dewpoints each afternoon, but still hesitant to follow that trend too closely given that recent warm day dewpoint forecasts have exhibited a substantial low bias. This is also near the peak of agricultural growing season locally and ET tends to keep surface moisture much more than often expected. The exception may be up closer to the SD border where drier recent conditions and greater grassland prevalence should allow for better mixing and lower dewpoints. So all this to say that while the heat index forecast remains in the 100-110 range Tues/Wed, there is a decent chance especially in the southeast 2/3 of the forecast area to have more surface moisture contribute to pockets of heat index >110 or even 115 on Wednesday. Thursday is still looking good for a back door cold front to move into the area as a short wave trough crosses the Great Lakes. Temperatures won't exactly be cold behind the front, but it will be cooler. It will be interesting to see how dewpoints respond in this airmass as well as the July near-post-frontal airmass can often hold some of the highest dewpoints we see in a summer (not unlike yesterday evening). Expect substantial moisture in the area with high precipitable water values and a decent chance for convergence along and north of the front to support late day thunderstorm development, possibly persisting into Friday morning as the front stalls out. Another short wave trough crosses the Great Lakes late Friday into Saturday and offers another good chance for precipitation as it enhances convergence and gives a boost of lift along the nearly stationary front. Very heavy rainfall and wind will be things to watch for during these two time frames although it's not a glaring risk at this point. A similar weather pattern looks to persist into next weekend as we'll be on the fringes of faster northwest flow and on the northern edge of the weakening upper ridge so have occasional thunderstorm chances and somewhat seasonal temperatures. && .AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Monday night) Issued at 1143 PM CDT Sun Jul 25 2021 VFR conditions at TAF issuance.
