.SYNOPSIS...A warming and drying trend will continue today, and
into Sunday for inland areas. Slight cooling is likely on Monday
as a quick moving, dry frontal boundary drops in from the north.
High pressure then dominates for most of the remainder of next
week, with warming temperatures expected through midweek along
with ongoing dry conditions through week's end.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:29 AM PDT Saturday...Clear and dry
conditions allowed for a cool start for Saturday. Most areas saw
lows in the lower 40s, just slightly below average for this time
of year. However interior valleys fell into the mid 30s this
morning, which in some of those locations, is 5 degrees below
average.
As mentioned in the previous discussion the current ridging pattern
will allow for another sunny, dry, and warm day. The warming trend
will continue with highs peaking in the 70s for a majority of
locations with only a few cooler spots along the coast. Even though
the interior valleys started off with the coolest temperatures of
the region this morning, they may also see the warmest highs peaking
in the upper 70s.
The main focus of the afternoon forecast update will be fine-tuning
the wind and temperatures. Sunday is setting up to be another sunny
and even warmer day, but the warming trend stops as a cold front
affects the region Monday. The dry frontal passage early into the
work week still looks to offer gusty conditions and a brief cool-
down. The magnitude of these winds still don't look to meet advisory
criteria, but will be something forecasters continue to monitor.
Temperatures may take a bit of a hit from this cold front on Monday,
but the potential remains for a mid-week warm-up offering some of
the warmest temperatures of the forecast.

.PREV DISCUSSION...As of 4:05 AM PDT Saturday...Skies remain clear
regionwide early this morning as dry northerly flow persists
aloft. Clear skies and dry air is allowing temperatures to drop
into the lower 40s in the valleys, and expect some of the cooler
interior valleys to cool into the upper 30s by sunrise.
An upper ridge, currently centered offshore along 135W, is
forecast to remain our dominant weather feature through the
weekend, maintaining dry conditions along with above normal
daytime temperatures. High temperatures today are forecast to be
at least a few degrees warmer than yesterday, and anywhere from 5
to 10 degrees warmer than normal. The upper ridge will slowly
shift eastward and over CA through Sunday morning. This will
result in further warming of the airmass aloft and contribute to a
few additional degrees of warming for inland areas on Sunday.
Some of our warmer inland areas will likely reach the lower 80s on
Sunday. However, low level onshore flow is forecast to increase
by Sunday afternoon which will likely result in slight cooling
near the ocean during the second half of the weekend. We may also
see areas of low clouds and fog develop in coastal areas by
Sunday and especially by Sunday night. Nighttime temperatures
will remain relatively cool on through the weekend, especially for
inland areas where skies are most likely to remain clear
overnight.
An upper trough currently over the Gulf of Alaska is forecast to
drop to the southeast over the next 48 hours and into the
Intermountain West by Monday morning. Precipitation with this
system will remain well to our north and northeast, but a dry cold
front is expected to sweep across our area early on Monday,
producing modest cooling that day. Locally breezy northwest winds
will develop behind the cold front on Monday, mainly near the
coast. By Monday night, as surface high pressure builds over
Oregon and northern Nevada, northerly winds will pick up in the
hills and become gusty at the higher elevations of the Bay Area.
Strongest winds will be Monday night and Tuesday morning when
gusts of up to 50 mph are likely above 2500 feet. Winds on Monday
night and Tuesday morning look similar in intensity to the
northerly winds that occurred in our hills earlier this week. Wind
advisories are not currently anticipated as strongest winds are
expected to be confined to the higher hills, but this is something
that will need to be monitored.
Models agree that the upper ridge will quickly rebuild near the
West Coast by Tuesday. The resurgent upper ridge combined with
offshore flow will result in a renewed warming trend Tuesday and
Wednesday. In fact, high temps by Tuesday are expected to return
to levels expected this weekend, with additional warming forecast
by Wednesday. By Wednesday, widespread 70s are forecast in coastal
areas, with low to mid 80s expected inland. Wednesday will likely
be the warmest day of the week.
Cooling is then anticipated late next week and into the following
weekend as the ridge breaks down and a longwave trough gradually
develops near the West Coast. The GFS, both deterministic and
nearly all ensemble members, maintains dry weather through next
weekend, even with the developing trough. The 00Z ECMWF develops a
deeper trough and forecasts widespread light precipitation across
our area next weekend. However, the majority of 00Z ECMWF
ensemble members maintain dry conditions through April 4,
suggesting the deterministic run of the ECMWF may be overly
optimistic concerning rainfall potential.

Light winds except onshore 10 knots in the afternoon and early
evening.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. Light west wind, increasing to 10 to 12
knots in the afternoon and evening.
SFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals...VFR. East to southeast cold air drainage
winds 5 to 10 knots in the morning, west 10 knots in the afternoon
and early evening. East to southeast winds 5 to 10 knots tonight
and Sunday morning.

.MARINE...as of 08:29 AM PDT Saturday...A dry cold front from the
Gulf of Alaska will move southeastward and reach the coastal
waters and bays late Sunday night and Monday morning. Northwest
winds will strengthen over the coastal waters early next week, a
Gale Watch has been issued for the northern outer coastal waters
Monday and Monday evening. A strong high pressure system
initially over the eastern Pacific early next week will tend to
ease as it extends over the Great Basin and the Intermountain West
during the middle of next week. Mainly moderate period northwest
swells through the period, including fresh, steep wind waves
developing early next week.
