.SYNOPSIS...Post frontal showers continue overnight into Sunday
with a brief lull Sunday. Rain showers will then resume Sunday
night into Monday followed by a much colder air mass resulting in
lowering snow levels into Tuesday. Cold conditions will persist
into at least midweek with potentially drier conditions heading
into the New Year.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:11 PM PST Saturday...Heaviest rain has
passed through the area and local radar is showing scattered
mostly light to moderate showers moving in from the ocean.
Lightning has dissipated as well, with no flashes detected at this
hour. Numerous flashes were detected over the coastal waters
earlier today, along with a handful over land, as a cold, unstable
post- frontal airmass moved in. Rainfall amounts have been
generally in line with the forecast, with 24 hour totals between
two tenths and half an inch in rain shadowed areas, a quarter of
an inch to an inch around the SF Bay Shoreline, North Bay Valleys,
and coastal Monterey Bay, one to two inches in the Santa Cruz
Mtns, and up to four inches in the Santa Lucia's. Minor to
moderate flooding of roadways was reported across the area, along
with some downed trees/powerlines, and minor mud/rock slides in
steep terrain areas. Urban and small stream flood advisories were
issued throughout the day across the SF Bay Area (minus North Bay)
and Central Coast, but those have all expired. No Flash Flood
products were needed around burn scar areas, since rainfall rates
stayed below thresholds. Peak rates were generally between a
quarter to half an inch per hour in the burn scars of Santa Cruz
and Monterey Counties, with lower rates at other scar areas. Also
of note, there was enough cold air aloft to produce light snow as
seen on webcams at some of our highest peaks, such as Chews
Ridge, Cobb Mtn, and Mt Hamilton- all above 4000 feet. Perhaps
more to come next week.
Scattered showers should continue through the night, based on
latest model guidance, with somewhat of a lull by sunrise, before
picking up again in the afternoon.
The next frontal boundary arrives overnight Sunday into Monday
morning around the Bay Area, with another dose of moderate rainfall.
QPF is similar to today's event, and thus flooding concerns remain
low. The main focus for the rest of the week will be the plummeting
temperatures Monday night and continued chill through the week.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:50 PM PST Saturday...It's been an active
Christmas Day across the Bay Area and Central coast as a cold
front moving southward across the region has resulted in
widespread rain showers and isolated to scattered thunderstorms.
These convective showers/thunderstorms have produced brief periods
of heavy rainfall and copious amounts of small hail. Overall,
minor urban and small stream flooding has been the greatest
concern through the day. However, saturated soils from recent
rainfall combined with locally gusty winds have also resulted in
downed trees across the region. As of early this afternoon, the
main band of rain showers stretches from the Santa Cruz Mountains
inland into interior Santa Clara County. Rain showers also persist
in wake of and ahead of this boundary which will continue to drop
southward across the Monterey Bay region over the next several
hours. Do expect the lightning threat to diminish slightly
overnight, yet will remain possible through this afternoon and
evening.
For tonight into Sunday, rain showers will linger in the post
frontal environment along with lowering snow levels to below ~2,000
feet across the North Bay and below ~3,000 feet over the Central
coast. Thus, look for some snow to accumulate in the region's highest
peaks overnight. Shower activity overnight may remain fairly active
as the main mid/upper level short-wave trough axis swings inland
across central California. This, brief periods of moderate to heavy
rainfall along with the ongoing potential for small hail can be
expected through Sunday morning. Many of the short-range, high-res
models never really diminish the ongoing rain showers into Sunday
before another up-tick in precipitation arrives Sunday night into
Monday.
The next main feature to impact the region will be another cold
front that will drop southward across the San Francisco Bay Area and
Central Coast on Monday. This will bring another round of widely
scattered rain showers to the region accompanied by a much colder
air mass in wake of the frontal passage. Initial snow levels on
Monday could range between 1,500 to 3,500 feet north to south across
our region. By Tuesday morning, snow levels drop rapidly and could
fall as low as 500 feet across the North Bay, around 1,500 feet for
the rest of the Bay Area and around 2,000 feet southward into
Central Coast. This big question at this time is if these lowering
snow levels and precipitation will align to produce lower elevation
snow. If this does occur, some places such as the North Bay Valleys
and/or East Bay Valleys could see a rain/snow mix early Tuesday
morning. Tuesday morning will be downright cold for much of the
region with widespread 30s (even near the coast) to upper 20s in the
region's coldest spots. Temperatures may be slightly warmer or
colder Tuesday morning depending on available moisture and cloud
cover as mentioned above.
Yet another mid/upper level short-wave trough will rotate down the
West Coast within the persistent larger scale trough on Tuesday.
This will bring another round of showers to the region from Tuesday
into Wednesday. However, snow levels begin to rise during the day on
Tuesday with an increase in moisture and west-southwest flow aloft.
Regardless, daytime temperatures will struggle to warm out of the
40s to lower 50s through midweek with cold overnight temperatures
likely to persist. While conditions appear to dry out late in the
week and into New Year's Day, forecast ensembles continue to
suggest well below average temperatures through the end of 2021.

.AVIATION...as of 09:31 PM PST Saturday...For the 06z TAFs.
Scattered showers from out over the ocean are steadily passing
over the land. This pattern is expected to continue overnight.
Meaning most terminals will be VFR with showers near the
terminals, then MVFR if a cell specifically passes over the
terminal. Slight chance for occasional moderate for that cell
immediately over the terminal, but most rain should be light.
There is a chance in a break in the rain on Saturday afternoon,
but there is low confidence as lingering moisture will remain in
the area. Better confidence for the next slug of moisture to bring
widespread rains overnight Sunday into Monday morning.
Winds are for the most part widespread out of the northwest and
breezy. They are expected to increase, with stronger gusts from 20
to 25 knots possible, after 06Z. There is a marginal chance for
LLWS, especially in the North Bay, should the stronger winds not
materialize, but was left out of the TAFs as there was higher
confidence in the surface winds. Winds will slowly diminish after
12Z. Throughout the course of the day, the winds are forecast to
slowly pivot around from west to southwest, and then southerly once
again by Sunday night, with the next chance for rain.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR/MVFR. Scattered showers provide a chance
for wet runways through the night. Mostly light rain, but a slight
chance for moderate rain if the right cell moves overhead. Winds
will be gusty between 06Z and 12Z, but stay out of the northwest.
Diminishing winds through Sunday, as they slowly rotate to the
southwest. The chance for lingering showers through the day will
prevail, with the next chance for steady rainfall after 06Z Monday
morning.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...The rain has finally diminished, however the chance
for scattered showers and light rain is expected through the night.
Winds are currently out of the south, but will likely switch over to
the northwest and increase. Stronger gusts around 20 knots are
possible. Lingering showers through the day, and will remain
onshore. Expected southerly winds to return after 00Z Sunday
night.

.MARINE...as of 08:56 PM PST Saturday...Scattered showers with
light rain are forecast overnight and through Sunday. Gusty
northwest winds are making for steep wind waves and hazardous seas
for smaller vessels. The northwest swell will persist through the
week. Expect the unsettled, rainy pattern to remain over the
waters through the New Year.
