.SYNOPSIS...
Quiet weather today with frost and freezing temperatures possible
in the valleys tonight. A potent weather system will impact the
region late this weekend into early next week with widespread
rainfall expected.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:45 AM PST Friday...Cool and crisp this
morning as the coldest overnight to sunrise temperatures of the
season arrive. The majority of the region fell into the 30s, with
the coldest sheltered pockets in the North Bay and Southern
Salinas Valley falling to the upper 20s. Meanwhile, coastal
locations were mediated slightly by the warmer bay and ocean
temperatures but still fell to the upper 30s to low 40s. Coldest
areas aside, freezing temperatures of 32 or less were also
reported in small pockets across the interior East Bay around
Walnut Creek to Mt Diablo and along the eastern hills of San Jose.
Expect tonight into tomorrow morning to be a degree or two
cooler, making it the coldest night of the season. A freeze
warning will likely be issued for regions where several hours of
subfreezing temperatures are expected (southern Salinas Valley &
North Bay interior valleys).
Otherwise, the main forecast focus of the day will be on the
upcoming atmospheric river event that will impact the region
primarily Sunday to Monday, but linger into Tuesday. Integrating
data from shorter term, higher resolution models on top of the
ensemble data fields will be of focus, particularly fine tuning
the orographic effects that models struggle to capture. IE, higher
amounts along the coastal ranges and lower amounts in rain
shadowed areas such as San Jose. Additionally, need to make
adjustments to account for the potential of the main front to
stall between the Marin Headlands and the Santa Cruz mountains for
18-24 hours late Sunday into early Monday. Peak wind gusts ahead
and with the front are also beginning to become more evident and
may necessitate a wind advisory along the coast where gusts of
35-50mph may be possible. Finally, the marine wave models are
tracking a large swell train arriving with and in the wake of the
atmospheric river that will likely warrant the need to issue high
surf advisories along the coastline from Monday into Tuesday.
These storms are generally on the warmer side, as well, so while
high elevation snow will not be a concern, may also need to adjust
temperatures slightly higher than we would otherwise see during a
typical Gulf of Alaska low. For more information on the Sierra
snow forecast (of which there will be plenty), please refer to our
neighboring office NWS Sacramento & NWS Hanford for more
information. Upon completion of updating the forecast with the
latest data, we will then assess the hydrologic risks to burn
scars and low lying areas, however, given that the last
significant storm that saturated soils was the strong atmospheric
river back in October, any flooding impacts should be
concentrated moreso around poorly drained and low lying areas or
steep windward mountain faces. In general, the rain is anticipated
to be predominately beneficial. For a more complete overview of

.PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...as of 04:03 AM PST Friday...
Today through Saturday:
Transient mid-level ridging will take hold as surface high pressure
centers to our west. Lighter winds will prevail with seasonal
daytime temperatures and cool overnights. The primary concern
remains frost/freeze potential for tonight into Saturday morning.
While many of our inland valley locations have already experienced
frost there does appear to be a somewhat reasonable potential for
meeting local freeze warning criteria (temperatures <=28 degrees for
two consecutive hours or more) across the southern Salinas Valley.
In this area model calibrated temperatures are trending towards the
cool side (25th percentile) of the guidance envelope, with
probabilities for temperatures <=28 at ~45 percent. While there
remains some question as to how widespread these colder readings may
be, do believe it prudent to issue a Freeze Watch for this area,
with the potential to upgrade to a warning today when/if confidence
for colder temperatures increases.
Saturday night through Tuesday:
An increasingly meridional flow pattern will evolve with large-scale
troughing setting up along the West Coast. As the upper trough digs
equatorward a persistent and most inflow will focus into our area in
the form of a weak to moderate Atmospheric River. With model and
ensemble clustering and spread being better than normal our
confidence for widespread and meaningful rain is rather high with
this event. Rain chances should spread from north to south across
the area, with chances perhaps starting as early as Saturday night
for the North Bay. However in general the best window for meaningful
rainfall appears to be from midday Sunday into Monday afternoon.
Shower chances may then persist for southern portions of the area
into Tuesday.
Storm total amounts appear rather encouraging. In fact, even "low
end" or 10th percentile totals are between 1 and 3 inches. Whereas
90th percentile values (which represent "reasonable worst case"
amounts) range from 1.5 to 3.5 inches for the urban areas with 4 to
6+ inches for the coastal ranges. The Weather Prediction Center/NWS
forecast leans towards the 90th percentile amounts and see no reason
to quibble with this given the rather high confidence forecast setup.
We remain a few days away from this event and changes to forecast
amounts and associated impacts are possible with new information.
So make sure you stay current with the latest forecast. While the
rain should be largely beneficial localized flooding of urban
and/or poorly draining areas is possible. As always we'll need to
closely monitor the potential for debris flows over burn scars and
mudslides in the steeper terrain as well.
Otherwise gusty southerly winds will accompany this system as a 50-
60 kt low-level jet cranks up at 850 mb. Some elevated instability
also suggests some low-end thunder potential over the local waters
on Monday.
Wednesday through Friday:
An active pattern continues with another upper wave passing through
the region for mid to late week. Although some differences remain in
how models resolve the upper features, ensemble members suggest
decent chances for some lighter precipitation amounts to return late
Wednesday into Thursday.

patchy freezing fog in the North Bay valleys (VLIFR-IFR)
developing this morning. Have added TEMPOs to STS/APC to account
for that potential owing to the conducive cold pool environment.
Patchy valley fog may become dense with visibilities ranging from
1/4 mile to 1/2 miles/ For now, have kept potential to 1/2SM due
to some early morning drying from some downsloping winds. Isolated
patches of low clouds and fog (VLIFR-IFR) are also possible over
the southern forecast area due to recent rain moistening the
boundary layer. A few patches of low clouds, fog and/or haze
(LIFR-MVFR) are possible along the immediate coastline tonight and
Friday morning, but its scope will also be limited by cold air
valley drainage winds and mixing. Given the drying this morning
have kept the potential for low cigs out of the current TAF
package for SFO/OAK/SNS/MRY/SJC/LVK. VFR for the afternoon and
rest of the TAF period.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR, mainly west to northwest wind 5 to 10 knots,
possibly east to northeast wind around 5 knots in the early morning.
VFR forecast with low to moderate confidence for some lowered
visibility at HAF. Hazy, misty conditions (IFR-MVFR) has not
developed thus far and so the chance for any low cigs to be advected
on west to northwest wind to SFO during/post pre-dawn hours this
morning remain below the criteria for a TEMPO.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...VFR, west to northwest winds 5 to 10 knots
diminishing and becoming east to southeast with cold air drainage
winds 5 to 15 knots this morning. A few patches of low clouds, fog
and/or haze (LIFR-MVFR) possible outside of the terminals, except
cold air valley drainage winds will greatly help at limiting its
areal coverage. Winds becoming onshore 5 to 10 knots this afternoon
with VFR progged for the remainder of the TAF period.

.MARINE...as of 08:22 AM PST Friday...Gusty northwest winds
diminishing by early morning, steep wind waves also diminishing
during the day. A strong upper level trough arrives Saturday
night through Tuesday with increasing southerly winds and
moderate to heavy rain. The seas will be predominately wind
driven with a moderate northwest swell. A much larger, longer
period northwest swell arrives late Monday timeframe.
