.SYNOPSIS...Unseasonably cool and unsettled weather conditions
will continue through the upcoming weekend as a series of storms
impact the region. Lingering light to occasionally moderate rain
will continue through Wednesday with the the next storm system
arriving late Thursday into Friday. A final and rather potent
storm system looks to arrive late in the upcoming weekend with
gusty winds and potentially significant rainfall.

.DISCUSSION...as of 01:54 PM PDT Wednesday...One weather system
is still impacting the region, but more additional storm systems
are on the way. The third and final storm looks to be the first
substantial atmospheric river of the season.
The KMUX radar imagery hasn't looked overly impressive since early
this morning, but rain buckets around the region continue to tip.
A decaying cold front and persistent onshore flow of moisture rich
air has led to persistent showers. Since roughly 6 AM this morning
little to no rain has measured south of Monterey Bay, S Bay and
some of the E Bay. Rain has measured a few hundredths to a few
tenths for the Santa Cruz Mts, SF, N Bay and E Bay Hills. Latest
model guidance will keep the showery pattern in place until the
next system arrives Thursday night. One minor change in the
weather from Wednesday to Thursday is the shower activity will
continue to slide northward. In fact, a good portion of the
forecast area may be dry Thursday afternoon with the exception of
the North Bay. Regardless, additional rainfall between this
afternoon through Thursday will be light to moderate.
Now for system number two: No significant change with today's
forecast. Latest timing brings another cold front into the North
Bay late Thursday night into early Friday morning. Ahead of the
front a few showers will be possible, but the bulk of the rain
will accompany the front. The front will bring moderate to locally
brief heavy rain to the North Bay early Friday before pushing S
and E. Unlike the first system which stalled, this fropa will be
more progressive and bring rain to areas S and E. There will
likely be some rain shadowing effects, especially Santa Clara
Valley and Salinas Valley. Additionally, hi-res models show the
leading edge of the fropa as being a little more dynamic with the
potential for thunderstorms. Thunderstorms will be most likely
northern coastal waters and northern North Bay. Rain and
subsequent shower activity will end from N to S behind the front
during the day Friday - second half of Friday may actually be
rather dry for most of the area. Drier weather linger into early
Saturday before the third system arrives.
The third and likely the wettest system: The leading edge of a
deeper moisture plume will begin to move in by Saturday afternoon
and Saturday night over the North Bay in the way of a few
showers. A potent upper level jet over the E Pac and deepening low
off the Pac NW will tap into a robust moisture plume. Enhanced
dynamics and anomalously high PWATs will usher in the first
notable Atmospheric River of the season. Models have been very
consistent in advertising a wet system late Sunday into Monday.
The details however vary from run to run and model to model.
Interesting to note how some of the deterministic and control runs
are significantly higher than the ensemble mean. AR guidance also
pegs this as a moderate AR with the occasional run or two showing
higher than that. Still not on board with a strong AR at this
time. That being said, the official forecast still calls for
moderate to heavy rain Sunday evening over the North Bay and then
spreading southward through the night into early Monday.
Orographically favored locations will likely be the overall
winners for precip totals. Some rain shadowing will be possible in
the inland valleys, but not as pronounce as system number two. As
always is the case with ARs, where the moisture plume makes
landfall will have the biggest impact, especially if it stalls or
moves slowly. Nonetheless, now is the time to prepare. Clear the
gutters, check the storm drains, and watch for some rises in
currently dry creeks. We'll also be watching the burn areas from
2020 for potential debris flows. Lastly, in addition to the rain
some wind will likely accompany the fropa. Borderline if a Wind
Advisory will be needed or not, but we'll have a better idea as
the timeframe nears.
Behind the AR a few lingering showers will be possible early next
week.

.AVIATION...as of 10:40 AM PDT Wednesday...For the 18z TAFs. Cold
front stalled overnight and winds have dropped off significantly.
Expect fairly status quo weather conditions through TAF period
with only minor variations. IE: generally MVFR cigs/visbys,
SHRA/VCSH with wet runways, SSE-ESE winds <10 kts, and overnight
LLWS up to 20-30kt at some locations. Models have struggled
extensively to capture wind speeds and directions both yesterday
and into this morning and continue to be in high levels of
disagreement, thus low confidence on wind forecast. Wet, unsettled
conditions to prevail through the coming days.
Vicinity of KSFO...Borderline MVFR/VFR cigs and visbys today with
on and off light showers. SSE-ESE winds generally 10 kts or less.
Possibility of 25-30kt LLWS this evening but not expected to be as
significant as last nights LLWS. Winds may begin to shift towards
the SW by late tomorrow afternoon.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay... VFR today with BKN/OVC CIGs staying at around
4000-5000 ft. VCSH currently and expected throughout the TAF
period with showers and moisture lingering around the area all
day. Moderate surface winds around 5-10 kts with the exception of
SNS currently with some gusty winds out of the SE, but should veer
NW in its diurnal fashion. There could be moments of light
drizzle today and tonight. MVFR expected again tonight with CIGs
lowering slightly tonight.

.MARINE...as of 10:29 AM PDT Wednesday...The overnight cold front
has stalled between Pigeon Point and Point Pinos and is gradually
weakening, allowing southerly winds to ease somewhat into this
morning. Breezy to locally gusty southerly winds will persist but
continue to weaken through the day. Steep to very steep southerly
wind waves are present in the waters this morning, at 8 to 13
feet at 8 to 11 seconds depending on location, but will gradually
ease with the winds through the day. Southerly winds persist
through tomorrow and into early Friday and increase somewhat with
the next cold front. Winds weaken significantly through Friday
but return southerly and strengthen again by late Saturday into
Sunday. Otherwise, a moderate northwest to west swell is present
in the waters.
