.SYNOPSIS...Cooling trend starts tonight as onshore winds return
with low clouds spreading inland tonight into Tuesday morning. A
midweek cold front will drop temperatures into the 60s and 70s
Wednesday through Friday with breezy winds. By Friday into
Saturday there will be a slight chance of light rain but the main
impact from the trough looks to be cooler temperatures instead of
widespread rainfall.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:02 PM PDT Monday...Mother Nature offered
some excitement on the evening shift as we had a 3.8 magnitude
earthquake near Pinnacles National Park followed by a round of
thunderstorms across SoCal that is ongoing. Have been monitoring
thunderstorm activity to see if there's any chance a thunderstorm
or two could drift northward into southern Monterey County.
Chances look very slim as the latest radar echoes are drifting
more offshore from the LA area at this hour. In addition, the hi-
res models didn't show much either with thunderstorm cells
looking weaker overnight and staying south of Paso Robles.

Definitely started to see a bit of cooling today across most of the
region if we compare yesterday's highs to today. Downtown San
Francisco went from 85 yesterday to only 73 today. Napa Airport
went from 92 to 88. San Jose went 91 to 89, Santa Cruz went 92 to
82. However, locations farther inland were the same as yesterday
or only had slight cooling.

However, we are still on track for the cooling trend to really
kick in by midweek. We're already starting to see a return of the
marine layer as the Fort Ord Profiler is now measuring a depth of
1000-1400 feet and we've got an increase of marine stratus along
the coast with patchy fog in the coastal waters and right next to
the shoreline which could lower visibilities. In addition, the
onshore SFO-SAC onshore pressure gradient went from only 0.3 mb
earlier today to 1.7 mb tonight. The increased marine influence
will help with additional cooling tomorrow. By Wednesday into
Thursday, a dry cold front is still forecast to track into our CWA
which will bring colder air aloft. If you look at 850 mb temps,
we ranged about 19-20 degrees C today and are forecast to drop to
a range of 7-10 degrees C by Thursday.

As for hopes of rain this weekend, confidence is still not good
on where exactly precipitation could fall. The second pulse of
energy from the trough appears to be moving farther south than
what we were seeing yesterday and may only impact the southern
portion of our CWA on Friday....if that. Even the ensembles aren't
hopeful for rain on Friday/Saturday. The ECMWF ensemble only had
14 out of 50 members indicate 0.01-0.03" of rain near Monterey
with zero rain up at SFO. The GFS ensemble only had 4 out of 30
members indicate a couple hundredths of rain for Monterey and SFO.
Our highest confidence in impacts of the trough pattern this week
is that it will maintain a cooling trend through the end of the
week and bring breezy conditions at times.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:26 PM PDT Monday...
...Short Term..Monday night through Tuesday... Satellite currently
shows some cirrus clouds moving over the central CA coast and Bay
Area this afternoon. Elevated smoke will be over the Monterey and
San Benito skies this afternoon from the fires to the east. More
warm temperatures this afternoon as the marine layer remains
compressed. Mild relief for higher terrain, as humidities remain
low this afternoon above 1000ft. Light onshore winds near the
coast.

Our next system starts to approach the Pac. N.W. Tuesday morning,
with a trailing cold front ahead of the low. Cooler 850mb temps
will advect in ahead of the front, cooling down Tuesday's
temperatures 5 to 10 degrees. A stronger onshore gradient will
also help to cool temperatures, as well and create breezy onshore
winds Tuesday.

...Long Term..Tuesday night through Sunday...
As the parent low begins to move onshore near the WA/OR border
late Tuesday night, a surface cold front starts to enter the
northern outer waters. The initial progression of the front is
more southward, along the outer waters Wednesday, due to an
embedded shortwave quickly moving down the back side of the low
and elongating a new trough off the coast of CA. With colder, high
pressure off the coast, and warmer inland temperatures a stronger
onshore gradient will give way for breezy onshore winds Wednesday
afternoon. GFS has the front moving through the Bay Area Thursday
morning. It should be a dry front, with mostly cooler temperatures
in store for Thursday with some breezy northwest winds.

Models have had lots of inconsistencies with the past few days,
but have overall been trending more dry with the 12Z runs today.
Available moisture is near or below normal, and the dynamics
quickly move over our CWA Friday. Light rain to even drizzle will
mostly be seen Friday, with the best chances near the Central
Coast including Monterey and San Benito counties.

After this system passes, more unsettled weather continues for
the forecast next weekend. However none of the rain totals are
note worthy at this time.

.AVIATION...as of 10:42 PM PDT Monday...For the 06z TAFs.
Terminals around the Monterey Bay area already LIFR, while most
other Bay Area terminals are currently VFR at the moment. Chances
increase overnight for stratus clouds to advect inland from the
ocean and bring IFR/LIFR cigs to many other terminals. Despite the
marine layer growing today to around 1000 feet, widespread inland
extent and cigs that do form should be low. Many terminals will
only see the reduced conditions for a few hours after 12Z. Skies
will then clear for VFR Tuesday with another weak onshore breeze.
High clouds will return to the Bay Area on Tuesday afternoon,
increasing in density into Tuesday night, ahead of an approaching
front. Chances for rain with this front is incredibly remote.
Lower clouds will return to the Bay Area Tuesday evening for
likely a mix of IFR/MVFR conditions with a chance for coastal
terminals to still be LIFR.

Vicinity of KSFO...Stratus clouds remain out over the ocean
currently for VFR the remainder of this evening. Chances for the
low clouds to move into the East Bay by 10Z with the chance to
back into KSFO after 12Z. So a TEMPO was added for reduced
conditions through 15Z. VFR Tuesday afternoon with a seabreeze and
high clouds increase ahead of an approaching front.

KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay...LIFR conditions are already present expected to
stay overnight with patchy fog and isolated VLIFR conditions
possible into Tuesday morning. Skies clear after 17Z for VFR
conditions on Tuesday afternoon, despite an increase of high
clouds moving in from the northwest. Low clouds return after 03Z
Tuesday night for a return to IFR/LIFR conditions.

.MARINE...as of 09:01 PM PDT Monday...Mostly light northwest
winds to continue through Tuesday afternoon over the waters with
wave heights on the lower side. Winds and waves will then increase
Tuesday night and Wednesday as a cold front moves north to south
through the waters. Steepness of the waves will make for hazardous
seas, particularly for smaller vessels. There is a slight chance
scattered showers will accompany the frontal passage.
