might be slight cooling. A shallow marine layer will bring
additional late night and early morning along the immediate coast.
A more notable cooling trend starts Tuesday and will continue
into next weekend. Locally breezy onshore winds as a surface front
passes mid week. Light rain potential near the end of the week.

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:35 PM PDT Sunday...We had another round of
toasty temperatures this afternoon with a mix of 80s and 90s
across much of the CWA. Napa, Santa Rosa, Concord, Livermore, and
San Jose stayed in the low 90s similar to Saturday. However, a
lack of low clouds near Monterey Bay allowed big jumps in today's
highs for that area: Monterey went from 70 yesterday to 84 today
while Santa Cruz went from 81 to 92 and Watsonville went from 83
to 91.
Not much of a marine layer on the Fort Ord Profiler as the drier
airmass lingers and has wiped out the shallow layer we did have
earlier. There's potential for the shallow marine layer to
redevelop overnight into early morning to bring in another round
of low clouds near the coast, but confidence is not high on
stratus redevelopment. If fairly clear skies persist most of the
night, be prepared for a cool start to your Monday...not frosty,
but there will be a chill. Monday highs will continue to be pretty
warm, but may nudge down by a couple degrees compared to today.
No change to the forecast package from this afternoon. A trough
pattern will dominate NorCal this week bringing a significant cooling
trend Tuesday into the weekend. As a front develops offshore by
midweek, expect an increase in onshore flow and a deepening marine
layer. Still looking at the potential for light rain by the end

our region in that synoptic trough pattern. Will continue to
monitor model trends to assess our confidence on the rain chances.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:08 PM PDT Sunday...
...Short Term...Tonight and Monday...Sunny and warm for the short
term forecast. With a compressed marine layer, drier air will
encompass areas above 1000 feet. Winds will be light, with onshore
winds near the coast.
Hazy skies will be seen near the inland locations this afternoon
and tomorrow afternoon, especially in southern Monterey and San
Benito counties. Patchy fog will be possible along the immediate
coast, around the Bay Area, and down the Salinas valley again
early Monday morning.
...Long Term...Monday night through Sunday...Unsettle weather is
at our doorstep Tuesday. A larger Alaskan low begins to drop south
out of the Alaskan Gulf Monday night. A trailing cold front
associated with this low trails all the way down to the 30 degrees
north latitudinal line. Global deterministic models agree that
the parent low remains well north in the PAC. NW. Cooler air is
forecasted to race ahead of the boundary, with 850mb temps cooling
5 to 8 degrees Tuesday morning. When combined with a stronger
onshore gradient, temperatures will cool off 5 to 10 degrees
Tuesday.
Deterministic models diverge on the strength of the front as it
moves through our area. 3 Day Cluster analysis with the GFS, ECM,
and Canadian ensemble members trend in a more organized low. Even
in the various groupings. I chose to lean towards the
deterministic GFS for this reason, as it displays a more organized
low mid week.
The GFS hints at the upper level boundary racing ahead of
the surface boundary when it gets closer to our waters. The upper
level vorticity maxima moves through the area Wednesday, however
the surface front finally moves onshore Thursday night. Ensembles
agree on PW values around 0.8 to 1 inch with this boundary, which
is around normal for the year. After analyzing model soundings,
most of that moisture seems to exist in the mid to high levels.
Most of the moisture moves across the area early, without the
forcing of the frontal boundary. This disorganization keeps rain
chances out of the forecast until Friday. Global ensemble members
strongly agree with this.
GFS and ECM both migrate an embedded shortwave southward, along
the northern CA coast line Thursday and Friday. Cooler air is in
place for most of the week due to the multiple parts of this
system moving through. There is still uncertainty in where this
short wave will swing through CA, in the central part or the
southern part. Ensemble cluster analysis has higher variance for
the end of the week and into the weekend. Members agree that the
chance of rain will exist for Friday through Sunday, however where
the best chances are will likely change run to run. As of now,
deterministic models agree that Monterey and San Benito counties
will see the best chances.

.AVIATION...as of 10:31 PM PDT Sunday...For the 06z TAFs. VFR
expected through most of the TAF period for Bay Area terminals.
Slight chance for low clouds/fog for Monterey Bay terminals, with
a chance for radiational fog at KSTS. Winds will remain light
overnight, with an onshore sea breeze developing Monday afternoon.
Better chances for low clouds to move back in late Monday
evening/Tuesday morning, particularly in the East Bay and Monterey
Bay.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR and light winds overnight. Breezy onshore
seabreeze around 15 knots Monday afternoon. Stratus rebuilds over
the ocean on Monday. Better chances for inland stratus movement,
especially to the East Bay. Given how compressed the atmosphere
has been, the BKN tomorrow night was changed to SCT as most clouds
are forecast to stay over the ocean, or remain near the East Bay.
But there is a chance for it to move back toward KSFO after 12Z
Tuesday morning.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...While skies remain VFR with light winds currently,
there is a slight chance of LIFR/VLIFR conditions early Monday
morning. Left as a TEMPO starting at 12Z because with dew points
as dry as they are and satellite showing only a small thin patch
of stratus over the ocean, confidence is decreasing for the clouds
to move inland. Will be monitored through the night. Onshore sea
breeze and VFR skies for Monday. Stratus rebuilds with better
chances for low clouds to return Monday night.

.MARINE...as of 08:27 PM PDT Sunday...Northwest winds mainly
light to locally gusty across the waters. 7 to 8 foot waves, with
isolated 10 foot waves at periods of 11 to 13 seconds making for
occasionally steep seas. However, wave heights will continue to
diminish overnight. A moderate northwest swell continues through
the next week while a light southerly swell of 2 feet or less will
also be moving through the waters.
