.SYNOPSIS...Deep marine layer in place with unseasonably cool
conditions arriving this weekend. A cold front moves through the
area tomorrow with light rain likely for northern areas. Gusty
offshore flow follows late Sunday into Tuesday. Warming and drying
into mid week next week.

&&

.DISCUSSION...as of 09:34 PM PDT Friday...It was a seasonably
cool day across the CWA, owing to a weak cutoff low stationed off
the SoCal coast, which kept the marine layer near 2500 ft deep.
With the widespread marine influence, temperatures topped out in
the 60s near the coast, low 70s around the Bay Shoreline, upper
70s to low 80s in interior valleys, and upper 80s in interior
Monterey and San Benito Counties. These temps were below daily
norms by a few to up to 15 degrees.

Night satellite imagery shows a stratus intrusion proceeding rapidly
inland. Coastal profilers currently peg the marine layer at almost
3000 ft deep. Most areas will see low clouds overnight, with hi-res
ensemble members supporting coastal drizzle.

Tomorrow, further cooling is in store as an early season potent low-
pressure system off the coast of British Columbia, drags a cold
front through NorCal. Water vapor imagery shows the moisture plumes
ahead of this system currently moving over Washington and
northwestern Oregon, with impressive rain totals measuring in inches
expected over that region in the next 24 hours. Latest hi-res
model runs show the front moving through North Bay in the early
morning, with light rain showers entering coastal Sonoma in the
late morning to early afternoon hours. More numerous, post-frontal
rain showers are likely in the evening and after nightfall, but
as they spread southeastward towards the immediate Bay Area, they
appear to dissipate. The result will most likely be unimpressive
precip totals for most of the Bay Area (<0.10 in) and Central
coast (<0.05 in), with wetting rains likely confined to coastal
Sonoma and perhaps Marin Counties. At the very least, this system
will bring cool temps and good RH relief to our very dry interior
areas. Unfortunately the relief will only last through the
weekend, as a burst of gusty onshore winds will follow behind this
exiting system. Due to gusty northerly winds that will funnel
down the Sacramento Valley and resulting steep drop in RH's
through Monday, A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the North
Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills and the Diablo Range, beginning
Sunday Night through Tuesday morning. Details on this event are
discussed below.

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 02:45 PM PDT Friday...Fall officially begins
next Wednesday (the 22nd), but a shift towards fall-like weather
will arrive a little ahead of schedule for the area this weekend
into early next week, but... more on that later.

Today has been a prototypical post- frontal transitional day with
a consistently deep marine layer of 2400 feet bank alongshore,
well below normal temperatures (5 to 15 degrees below normal),
and otherwise fair weather conditions under temporarily increasing
surface pressure. Yesterday's shortwave trough responsible for
these conditions has since lifted up and out of the area though a
disorganized cutoff low is currently lingering over the Central
Coast. This cutoff low is expected to lift over the interior
Central Coast overnight and keep breezy onshore flow and deep
marine layer in place.

Meanwhile, 1100 miles NW of San Francisco, lightning is currently
being detected in the cold, unstable core of a potent 533dm Gulf
of Alaska low. This storm system is expected to be the first
significant wet, fall-like Gulf of Alaska to impact the region
since the spring, and with it, the potential for both rain and
offshore winds. While the unstable core of this feature is not
expected to roll through our area through this weekend, the
leading cold frontal boundary is. The cold front on the leading
(southeast) edge of the feature will sweep through the region
tomorrow, initially over the North Bay early tomorrow, before
transitioning southeast into the Bay Area proper through the day.
This may initially perturb the deep marine layer and lead to
light drizzle through tomorrow morning. Precipitation will be
seeded by a 200% of normal 1.4-1.6 TPW plume focused over the
North Bay and heaviest along the coastal ranges of Sonoma and
Marin, where the wettest spots such as Venado could see 0.33 to
0.50". The latest runs of the high resolution deterministic and
ensemble models have pulled back the rain coverage ever so
slightly in favor of pushing that extra precipitation towards the
orographically favored coastward slopes and ridges which is no
surprise given the setup, but otherwise, the forecast has
remained fairly consistent with the overnight forecast package.
Venado aside, precipitation numbers across the remainder of the
North Bay interior ranges and valley will run between 0.10 and
0.20", while the I80 corridor including San Francisco and Oakland
will be closer to 0.04 to 0.10". The remainder of the SF bayshore
and Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay could see a few hundredths. Rain
shadowed portions of the interior, such as the Santa Clara valley
and interior Central Coast are not expected to see more than .01",
if that. For those wondering, the middle of September to the
middle of October generally heralds the return of wet systems in
the region as the polar low strengthens moving towards the
autumnal equinox, though it should also be noted that the official
water year does not reset until October 1st.

Rain aside, breezy west to southwest winds of 10 to 20 mph with
gusts of 20 to 30 mph are expected to occur concurrently with the
arrival of the cold front through the afternoon and into the
evening. These breezy winds could be the strongest some interior
locations have seen since last spring, so be sure to secure any
top heavy loose objects before tomorrow afternoon.

Ensemble model members are inconclusive regarding the fate of the
front as it begins to exit the North Bay on Saturday. An equal
number of members show the front falling apart as it moves through
the North Bay, while others show it falling apart as it descends
into the Bay Area, while only a few show it making it farther
southward than the Bay Area. Thus, there remains a fair amount of
uncertainty regarding the southern and eastern periphery of the
Bay Area where the front is expected to fracture then dissipate.

In the wake of the trough, the pattern will remain progressive
(ie, quickly changing) and allow for eastern Pacific high
pressure to build ashore as the lee of the trough hastily slides
into the Great Basin. Consequently, a steepening northerly
gradient will develop between the Pacific Northwest and Northern
California and offshore flow will develop initially along the
western flank of the Northern Sacramento valley before cascading
into the interior ridges of the North and East Bay beginning
Sunday night. A second pulse of these offshore winds is expected
again Monday night into Tuesday. North to northeast winds of 15 to
25 mph with gusts of 30 to 50 mph are possible over the area of
greatest concern (interior ridges of Napa, Alameda, and Contra
Costa counties), with speeds likely peaking between 3 and 9 am.
Localized gusts at the lower elevations are possible into the
sunrise hours on the lee of the ridges (valleys on W-SW flank of
slopes). These winds, in addition to record dry fuels across the
interior slopes, will significantly increase fire weather risk
concerns through early next week, but there is one important
caveat. That is, there remains a moderate level of uncertainty
regarding the coverage and amount of rainfall that these most at
risk North & East bay interior mountain locations will receive as
the cold front pushes through on Saturday. As a result, fire risk
will largely be dictated on how much rainfall ends up falling over
these areas, with low risk in the event of >0.25" while high risk
is possible up to 0.10" or less. Given that the recent model runs
have been slowly erasing the periphery of the heavier rainfall and
concentrating it towards the coastal slopes, there is a good
probability that most of these highest at-risk interior slopes
will struggle to see 0.10" or more. Thus, a fire weather watch was
issued in coordination with WFO Sacramento & WFO Eureka due to the
existing risk factors of strong offshore wind, drying conditions,
record dry fuels, but all contingent on how much rain falls this
weekend. The fire weather watch may be cancelled in the event of
heavy rain or conversely upgraded to a red flag warning in a
scenario where the cold front stalls farther north or fails to
deliver rain. In addition, warmer, drier air is expected to arrive
with the building ridge during the day Monday into Tuesday though
winds will be marginally weaker. With this, daytime humidity
values will tank to the teens and overnight humidities recoveries
struggle. This is a dynamic situation that may change rapidly
with periods of higher than typical near term uncertainty and
therefore warrants close attention.

.AVIATION...as of 10:55 PM PDT Friday...For the 06z TAFs. Mostly
MVFR conditions tonight for all terminals. Chances for IFR
ceilings at KSTS/KAPC from 12Z-18Z. Moderate confidence on -DZ/-RA
for KSTS/KAPC as well stating around 12Z this morning, reducing
visibilities to around 5SM. As a FROPA approaches the North Bay
tomorrow afternoon, intermittent -DZ will continue for KSTS
through the period, becoming -RA/RA towards the end of the period
(02-06Z) when the FROPA is forecasted to move southward down the
central CA coast. Slight chance for -DZ at KSFO/KOAK this morning
from 12-15Z, with visibilities remaining around 5-6SM. MVFR
ceilings will hang around the Bay Area, inland, and Monterey
terminals until around 18-20Z, with SCT-BKN 050-070 skies in the
afternoon and evening hours. MVFR ceilings should remain around
the North Bay terminals through the period. Winds will remain
light through the period as the FROPA itself is weaker.
Southwesterly winds for coastal terminals Saturday afternoon,
veering to westerly by the end of the period.

Vicinity of KSFO...MVFR ceiling then developing by 08z, light
drizzle reducing surface visibility 11z-18z Saturday morning.
Drizzle could be borderline light rain, expect wet runways. A
steady deepening of the marine layer will lift ceilings to MVFR-
VFR by late Saturday morning and afternoon. Model output leaning
toward more light rain nearing KSFO just after 06z (Saturday
evening).

KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay...MVFR ceilings tonight and Saturday morning, light
drizzle chances through 18Z this morning. Ceilings lifting to
MVFR- VFR by late Saturday morning and afternoon. Skies fill in
with MVFR ceilings by 02-03Z.

.MARINE...as of 10:47 PM PDT Friday...Moisture out ahead of a cold
front will move across the coastal  waters bringing a chance of
rain tonight into Sunday. North to  northwest winds will return
and increase over the waters early  next week. Seas remain mixed
with a short period northwest swell  and a longer period weak
southerly swell.
