.SYNOPSIS...Warmest temperatures for interior locations expected
today through Sunday as high pressure grows in the Western States.
Elevated moisture from remnant tropical moisture will move
northward over the coastal waters along the Sonoma coastline
Friday evening into Saturday morning. Then a cooling trend for
temperatures is expected early next week for the entire region.

.DISCUSSION...as of 03:00 AM PDT Friday...Even at this hour,
there is still elevated moisture churning weak radar returns over
the coastal waters off the Sonoma coast. It remains impressive,
meteorologically speaking, how much the monsoon moisture over
performed in its longevity especially considering how little
precipitation is likely making it to the surface, if any at all.
It would be argued that the models picked up and handled the
entire event over the last 24 to 36 hours fairly well; however,
none of the models picked up on it just lingering off the coast.
Or at least certainly not for this long. That being said, it seems
fairly harmless as any moisture generating precip is weak and
falling into dry air before reaching the stable marine layer
below. It is also rapidly decaying and will likely be done before
the sun rises.
Most of the forecast discussions this week have been discussing the
high pressure that has been building over the Rocky Mountains. Early
in the work week it was likely going to be over the Four Corners,
but by mid week ensemble models shifted it to where it has been
developing: around Nevada and Utah. Recent ensembles keep the center
of it in Western Utah, but have it slightly stronger from 24 hours
prior, now up to 596 dm at 500 mb as opposed to yesterday's 594 dm.
Recent models also have it becoming more broad by extending it into
the California Central Valley. This will increase temperatures at
850 mb on Friday and Saturday to around 26 degrees Celsius, even
pushing closer to 28 degrees Celsius for the most interior parts of
the region. Onshore flow will keep the immediate coast in the 70s,
but better chances for 80s and 90s farther inland. With this nosing
westward of the high pressure and warming at 850 mb, there is a
better chance for the interior locations and higher elevations to
possibly reach into the 100s. Temperatures have been cool as of late
and this increase in temperatures will be a quick shot-in-the-arm
for the interior. Given how limited the area that is expected over
the 100s is and most of it being at higher elevations, it was
decided not to issue any heat products at this time; but will be
something to keep an eye on through the weekend.
The other main point to make with the warmer temperatures is that
overnight low temperatures will remain warm through the evening. The
marine layer is not going anywhere, but it is very compressed right
now down below 1200 feet, limiting the help that it can provide to a
broader audience. For higher elevations especially, as well as for
the interior areas, overnight temperatures will likely stay in the
60s and even more so into the 70s for that higher terrain which will
keep things quite toasty through the night. Lastly, the high
pressure will drive drier conditions and without the help of the
marine layer, humidity values will be drier through the weekend.
In addition to the high pressure to the East, there is a weak low
about 250 miles west southwest of San Francisco. Between these two
systems, it makes for a nice avenue for the the remnant moisture of
the tropical system that was once named Kevin to move northward. One
look at IR satellite this evening and the weak outer boundary of the
clouds are already at the same latitude as the Monterey/San Luis
Obispo county line. But its coldest cloud tops are still at a
latitude on par with the California/Mexico border and is at least
100 to 150 miles off the coastline. That being said, it is moving
northward and models are suggesting it will pass the Bay Area Friday
night into Saturday morning. But which model to trust changes the
forecast. The NAM, the Euro, and a local WRF model brings it close,
but keeps the moisture aloft well off the coastline, allowing it to
travel into the northeast Pacific. The Canadian and the GFS however,
brings it a little closer to the coastline increasing elevated
relative humidity values over the North Bay between 700 and 500 mb.
One thing all the models agree on is keeping instability, by way of
Total Values and CAPE values, low to minimal. Still, if this
moisture does make it to the Sonoma coastline, the topography itself
could help influence storm development. A lot of this will depend on
what track the moisture takes as it moves northward. It could be as
simple as a few high clouds that make for a pretty sunset, it could
provide some coastal drizzle or sprinkles, or it could generate a
stray lightning strike. Similar to this past surge of monsoon
moisture, there is just not enough instability to merit adding
thunderstorms to the forecast at this time. But when there are these
remnant tropical moisture plumes that move northward, the chances
are never zero completely. It was decided to add a slight chance for
sprinkles along the immediate North Bay coastline. Slim to no
accumulation is expected, assuming the precipitation actually makes
it to the surface. That being said, close attention will be paid
to this moisture through the day.
As for Hurricane Linda, which is also churning in the southeastern
Pacific, its forecast will keep it out sea without any steering flow
to send it northward. Looking beyond Saturday, ensemble models
continue to develop a short wave trough to develop and move inland
over the Pacific Northwest on Sunday night into Monday. This will be
the main vehicle to regrow the marine layer and usher in cooler
temperatures for the region beginning early next week.

.AVIATION...as of 11:37 PM PDT Thursday...For the 06z TAFs. VFR
for SF Bay Area terminals and IFR/LIFR around Monterey Bay.
Satellite night imagery shows a finger of stratus through the
Golden Gate into the East Bay hills. Moderate onshore gradient
will allow stratus to wrap around the bay bringing probable IFR
CIGs to KOAK/KHWD by around 08z. CIGs will also cover
KAPC/KSFO/KSJC later tonight. Local radar shows scattered echos
over the northern coastal waters, with no impacts to terminals
expected. Areas of BR/FG possible tonight along the coast and in
coastal valleys with CIGs lowering to IFR/LIFR/local VLIFR.
Conditions improving to MVFR/VFR Friday morning. Northerly winds
aloft will continue to advect wildfire smoke into the region
tomorrow, impacting slant range visibility, mainly for North Bay
and East Bay terminals. Afternoon seabreezes will aid in clearing
out smoke near the coast.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR. SCT012 reported at the terminal, with
stratus banked along the coastal range and pushing through the
Golden Gate into East Bay hills. WNW winds near 10kt, easing
overnight. MVFR/IFR CIG developing overnight, mixing out to VFR by
17z Friday.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO. Slant range visibility
reduced in wildfire smoke through Friday.
Monterey Bay...Currently IFR/LIFR, lowering to LIFR/local VLIFR
overnight due to coastal stratus and fog. Conditions lifting to
MVFR- VFR Friday morning. Slant range visibility possibly reduced
in wildfire smoke through Friday.

coastal waters locally gusty across portions of the inner coastal
waters tonight through Friday. Gusty afternoon and early evening
onshore winds redeveloping from the Golden Gate to the West Delta
Friday. The sea state continues to be driven by a weak southerly
and northwesterly swell, as well as northwest wind waves. Stronger
winds developing across the northern outer waters this weekend,
persisting through early next week.
