.SYNOPSIS...A slight cooling trend can be expected into the end
of the week as onshore flow increases. Winds will stay onshore
and breezy, while each night can expect a return of stratus clouds
with a gradually deepening marine layer.

.DISCUSSION...as of 08:54 PM PDT Tuesday...Weather conditions
across the region this afternoon and evening are defined by a
marine layer of around 1,200 feet in depth and high pressure just
inland. This resulted in low clouds hugging the coast this
afternoon with temperatures in the 60s while far interior areas
such as Pinnacles National Park and Parkfield reached 105 and 106
deg F respectively. Meanwhile, the overnight stratus push is well
underway at this hour with low clouds spreading inland around the
Monterey Bay, through the Golden Gate and into coastal areas of
the North Bay. This trend will continue through the night with
cloud cover spreading into many valley locations with the
potential for some patchy coastal drizzle as well. Otherwise, the
ongoing forecast remains on track with no updates anticipated this

.PREV DISCUSSION...as of 01:31 PM PDT Tuesday...Warmer temperatures
are forecast for this Tuesday afternoon. An approximate 596 dm
ridge at 500 mb has kept a dry airmass aloft and will increase
temperatures. Temperatures will remain in the 60s to low 70s
closer to the coastline and bay shorelines, but 80s and 90s are
forecast inland, with isolated low-100s in traditional hotter and
drier inland locations of the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills,
and Southern Monterey County.
That ridge centered over Southern Nevada will slowly weaken and
meridionally contort as an upper level trough moves toward the
Northern California coastline late Tuesday evening and into
Wednesday morning. As the trough approaches, the marine layer will
deepen and likely increase the height of cloud cover. But the
marine layer will remain firmly in place through the end of the
week. The trough will push ocean moisture into and up the coastal
mountain ranges, increasing humidity values ahead of the trough.
The NAM is projecting an increase in precipitation probabilities.
A slight chance for patchy drizzle along the immediate coastline
for Wednesday morning, with a better chance for drizzle is
possible for Wednesday evening and into Thursday morning. It was
decided to hold off on increasing QPF forecast values for
Thursday morning at this time, but would not be surprised if a few
hundredths fell in coastal areas which could leave for a few wet
areas on the roadways. If greater confidence increases, QPF
values will be bumped up.
Winds are already onshore and will continue doing so. However,
the pressure gradient will tighten which will make for an increase
in winds aloft. At this time, it will be breezy each afternoon,
but best chances for stronger winds will be aloft. Friday looks to
have the best opportunity for some winds mixing down, as ensemble
models show KSFO having wind gusts between 25 to 30 mph, but that
is for a traditional windy location as the winds funnel through
the San Bruno Gap. With the deeper marine layer and the winds
being onshore, there are no fire concerns at this time. Lastly,
the trough will help break down that ridge and bring cooler
temperatures to the area through Friday. Temperatures along the
coast will stay in the 60s, as more 70s and 80s can be expected
inland.
By Saturday, the Euro and GFS models expect the trough to move east-
northeast over the intermountain west. In its wake, will be more
zonal wind flow aloft. This will leave the marine layer around the
Bay Area and the Central Coast, but also nudge temperatures upwards
a few degrees as a weak localized ridge tries to develop over
Southern California. However, the impacts will be brief as ensemble
models are thinking the next trough will move southward down the
Pacific coast from the Gulf of Alaska early next week. For now it
will move over the Pacific Northwest around the Washington/Oregon
border and likely not directly impact the Bay Area. While there is
still plenty of time for models to adjust, early August looks to be
fairly mild with onshore winds and a marine layer firmly in place.

.AVIATION...as of 10:30 PM PDT Tuesday...For the 06z TAFs.
Stratus clouds have already entered the bays and slowly creeping
farther inland. These clouds have cigs between 400 and 700 feet,
meaning that IFR conditions are expected through the overnight
period with isolated terminals at LIFR. Most terminals can expect
clearing after 19Z; however, coastal terminals will see clouds
linger through the day. Winds will remain onshore, with breezier
conditions in the afternoon. An approaching dry front will likely
deepen the marine layer slightly Wednesday evening for a chance
for MVFR conditions, but there is greater confidence in a return
to IFR conditions Wednesday into Thursday morning with a chance of
drizzle near the coast.
Vicinity of KSFO...VFR at the terminal, but IFR conditions are
already observed over the East Bay and likely moving to KSFO by
9Z. IFR for early Wednesday morning. Models hinting at clearing
after 17Z. As a front approaches, winds will remain out of the
northwest and increase, with stronger gusts up to 25 kts. Chance
for earlier return of cigs Wednesday evening, but a chance for
MVFR conditions initially as the front acts to deepen the marine
layer, but eventually falling to IFR overnight, with a chance for
patchy drizzle at the terminals early Thursday morning.
KSFO Bridge Approach...Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay...IFR conditions with chances for LIFR conditions and
patch fog. Reduced conditions are expected through the TAF period
for coastal terminals, limited period of clearing for inland
terminals Wednesday afternoon. Winds will remain onshore with
stronger breezes in the afternoon down the Salinas Valley.
IFR/LIFR conditions return Wednesday evening.
